The Superliners being on the Illini/Saluki caused shortages on the ↙️ Chief & especially the 🏛️ Limited causing the formation of the Floridian to combine the 🏛️ Limited & Silver 💫

Thanks for sharing this info - “Axle Count” to activate grade crossings? I hadn’t heard that before! Maybe that’s why Amtrak California also uses primarily modified Superliner equipment on their routes?

Correction: Prior to 1986, the Illini carried numbers 381 and 382 and was the Chicago - Champaign train. The Shawnee was not discontinued carried numbers 391 and 392. The Shawnee ran with a morning departure from Chicago, turning in Carbondale, and departing northbound at 4:00pm. Its schedule was similar to today's 391-392 pair in this way. In 1986 trains 381 and 382 were dropped, with 391's departure changed to 4:00pm from Chicago. The train would arrive in the late evening as 393 does now, with the trainset laying over until the following afternoon for a 4:00pm departure. Train numbers 381 and 382 were later reused by Amtrak for the Carl Sandburg. You can take the word of a Carbondale native who saw these trains every day for years.

lived in champaign until 2021, and didin't know coaches changed to superliner. when i was there, only 59 new orleans used superliners that was bit more expensive than illini and saluki. anyways,, thanks for information. wanna be there and have some black dog bbq at old champaign station.

Very interesting. Thank you for sharing. Listed tare weight for a Superliner 1 coach is 147400 lbs. An Amfleet 2 coach is 107800 lbs. A new Venture coach is 115000 lbs. Is Venture heavy enough to satisfy CN?

They definitely are. They use ventures on CN trackage between Chicago-Joliet and Detroit-Pontiac.
