Why the Audi S4 Avant is the ULTIMATE *DIESEL*

In this video. I get to go out in the new Audi S4 Avant. For the first time ever, the fast decrete version now gets a "cough'" - a diesel motor.
I'm going to find out whether it's any good or whether they have made a mistake.

In the flesh this face lift looks great and if a tuning house can sort out that initial transmission WLTP related delay off the mark, this engine has epic torque, so is hugely fast in the real world. I like it. I have a 3.0tdi A6 Avant Quattro so its on my shortlist but with the black optics pack

I'd just buy an A6 Avant 3.0tdi quattro and remap it personally. Don't think the new Audi styling has grown on me yet. Those wheels on that S4 are terrible though

I have the current S5 and am sure it will go the same as this one with the new diesel. I personally would not go for as I don't see why you wouldn't just buy a 3.0d Sline. You buy the S because you can't afford the RS. Mine in normal traffic will return 35 mpg and up to 40 on a long journey and with unleaded being less than diesel this again doesn't make sense. This new car needs to return well over 45 mpg. And the sound of the petrol S4 is great, really nice as it goes through the revs plus its quick which is why again you buy an S model Audi. Who would want a diesel S3? No this is not for me.

@@rh9224 over 35,000 miles of ownership the long distance trip has recorded 30 mpg. I drive all different kinds of miles so 35 mpg is quite normal on a reasonable distance. Like I said driving through all the 50 speed limits around here it will get to 40 but that's not easy to hold. It's great considering its got 350 bhp.

@ake cet I'm only going on what the dash read out states. If this is not correct them maybe I'm wrong. If I put my foot down a lot then 20 mpg is what I would get. Its a great car, I love it. It goes back to the lease company Fri. Swapping for a new M2, I think this will be worse on fuel.

I hope I get access to press cars this fast in the future! I was apprehensive about this engine but in all fairness it is well suited - The old S4/S5 will be missed but this definitely makes sense. Good work Sid! Also been loving the Driv3r outro, proper nostalgia.

If you do long trips, way less time filling up and that is useful. The torque on this and previous BiTdi is so addictive. Good engines for the real world. I drive older gen one replaced an AMG and a Subaru STI. So easy to go quick.

@@paulquince5470 its counter productive, if it was a 25k family estate mondeo then that's fair enough but not on a car thats 57k. Most diesel owners are owners because they are penny pinchers and want to save money as they can't afford the petrol equivalent other wise we would all be driving petrol v8's and v10's on long journeys gt car esc. Filling up takes 2 whole minutes and although a little extra torque is nice nothing beats revs and horse power on a screaming performance petrol engine. This car will be a very rare car on the road and will be for people who want a cheap lease deal as nobody in there right mind is spending there own 57k on this diesel when an m3 m4 is a few thousand more.

Lower Co2 than petrol and Euro VI diesel emissions standard are super clean so and welcome in clean air zones so it's actually better than petrol

@@robz1471 NOx is an issue for petrol and diesel and both are close now, this is from Auto Expres mag - For diesels, the permitted level of NOx for Euro VI cars has dramatically dropped to a maximum of 80mg/km, compared to the 180mg/km level that was required for cars that met the previous Euro 5 emissions standard. In contrast, the NOx limit for petrol cars remained unchanged from Euro 5, as it was already low at 60mg/km.

I have to agree with you there hasn't been much difference between the S4 and RS4 , but now the RS4 will be the full on RACE CAR and the S4 can be fast and sporty with alot of comfort and refindment. I'd say the S4 would suit a family that still like abit of B-road bashing , then take the full family away for the weekend and retain a good MPG while cruising to the coast.
