The ending when he realized he HAS to be BOTH Bruce Wayne and Batman to save Gotham... that was so cathartic for me. You can't save anyone just with violence and vengeance. You also need hope and optimism to counter how depressing Gotham is. You need to be both the light and the dark for their people (good and bad).

Yeah - This film was really great, such amazing cinematography/story/pacing/batman interpretation. Will watch again soon. the narration arc with 'something in the way' playing was truly amazing, some extremely memorable cinematic moments. And in the first narration, seeing the bat-cave and the new technology and his journaling afterwards - I loved the obsessiveness of this batman to his work/craft to the point where it is almost always on his mind. We also really saw his intellect / detective ability in this film. And In the ending monologue on hope, during that beautiful almost religious sunset scene - that naration greatly reminded me of the dark knight trilogy. In the beginning of the film he is driven by vengeance, in the end he strives to represent hope.

I like how miserable Batman seems. Because in reality, there’s no way anyone could pull off that lifestyle without serious drawbacks. Nocturnal, extremely small amounts of sleep, getting physically battered constantly, dealing with the most miserable scum of the earth people every day, etc. There’s no way someone could do all this and then go be some overly charismatic playboy at a party.

Pattinson actually talked about that lack of disconnect between Batman and Bruce Wayne in an interview as something he and the director were interested in exploring as another aspect of a Batman in the midst of his "year 2". He's still at the point of his obsession with his mission that he hasn't even bothered to cultivate the facade day-time personality of Bruce Wayne at all, he's just Batman 24/7 with or without the mask. This is a Batman who hasn't found his balance (as far as someone like Bruce can achieve) with what he symbolizes, both to others and in his own mind. He's just an angry young man with a lot of money and training venting years of pent up aggression and trauma at every justifiable target he can find, he doesn't care yet about keeping up appearances. edit: I fixed the name, it was late lol

Right and this does a great job of exploring the connection or separation of Batman and criminals. His first approach inspired criminals as much as the common person so he changes how the Batman operates. But that’s a great explanation of how Year 1-2 BatMan doesn’t ever really take off the mask even as Bruce. He doesn’t care.

About the Batman not realising the damage he's causing to the people of Gotham part. .. Isn't that kinda the whole point of the movie though? One of the main points of the movie is that Batman's methods are heavily flawed, he wants to clean the city of corruption and crime but he's going the wrong way about it. He's only doing it through fear and vengeance. To the people of Gotham, they don't know or care about his intentions, he's just more of the same shit to them. You see it from the reaction of the asian guy at the start ("Please don't hurt me") from people calling him a freak, from The Riddler thinking he's on his side, to the Riddler's goon saying he's also 'Vengeance'. He realises in the end there's not much difference between him and The Riddler, both have pretty good intentions and motivations but both are going about it n the wrong way. When he sees the Riddler's followers, he thinks who would the Batman's followers be? Would they be like these nutjobs? Is he a nutjob? Who is The Batman anyway. Then you see him literally being followed by civilians as he is helping them escape and he realises this is who the Batman should be, someone people can rely on, when all hope is gone. Batman was very close to becoming a Villain, just like the Riddler, it was kinda the whole point

1. The fact that there's no distinction between Bruce Wayne & Batman is probably intentional, the life of Batman has completely consumed him and he's the most reclusive man in the city - pretty much ignoring the issues of Wayne Enterprises. 2. The main theme/point of this movie is that everything he does is for vengeance, saving lives while still incredibly important to him is secondary. It's only through the final act does he realize that vengeance is only making things worse, and so his main priority becomes the saving of lives & giving hope. People call him a recluse and he comes across as standoffish. Because he's only two years in to his vigilante life, he hasn't found how to balance Bruce and Batman yet. Same with the batmobile chase. Batman is more of a reckless driver than we've seen him be. He's not crashing into people and is clearly trying to avoid hurting civillians, but he's using the environment in a more reckless way than we've seen. This, too, imo is because of his inexperience and not knowing exactly how to be the Batman that Gotham needs. Its uncharacteristically reckless, but I think that's the point. He's a new Batman and is still getting the hang of things and it results in a reckless Batmobile chase.

I couldn't agree more with your statement. I think alot of people see the disconnect as a fault, but I definitely see it as a positive because it clearly shows how early on in his career Batman is in at this point, not developing that playboy Bruce Wayne facade just yet. Even the dark tone and his notion of being "vengeance" slowly changes at the end of the film to be more of a symbol for "hope", which clearly shows he's continuing to grow as a Batman

Can we instead just focus on the real flaw of the movie? It was a slog. It was predictable af. It was repetitive. It was one note in tone, endless gritty grittiness w that orchestral nirvana soundtrack droning and DRONING. I had to watch this over two days in four sittings and I’m usually a freak about finishing a good movie after I start. I’m not hating, it had its moments, I’m eager for a sequel, and I won’t compare it to Dark Knight, but god it got boring. The realism was a nice addition for sure though.

I think the best part of the whole film was how Batman was almost an anti-hero. He was more focused on making the criminals of Gotham fear him rather than the people of Gotham feel like he’s a hero and protector. It’s even subtlety hinted at people calling him vengeance, rather than justice. A great example of this is the opening scene where the graffiti artist is shitting himself over the bat signal. He knows that if Batman showed up he’d get his eyes pushed through the back of his skull over a minor crime like vandalism. That’s not justice that’s borderline terrorism and it really showcases what this Batman is about.

I like to think that Rob Patt’s Bruce Wayne is teetering on the edge of insanity. Which is what he struggles with during the duration of the film. You can see the distrust and distance in every scene, Pattinson’s ability to pull a thousand yard stare off so well is haunting. He even says that Wayne cannot even discern between the nights he operates and has to record and remind himself of what happened, which I love showing a Batman that is beginning to break. Pattinson’s Batman feels the most human, and the most grounded.

Him being Batman did not affect the crime rates, it did the opposite. It scared low level crooks shitless but it also gave birth to a different breed of villain i.e the Riddler. Bruce’s image of the playboy is essentially what his pops was, and Alfred even reminds him to play that part. We’ll see Playboi Bruce in sequels and Pattinson’s gonna kill it. The inexperienced emo young adult who actively only seek for vengeance, he also learnt by the end of the movie that vengeance will only inspire the wrong people (in this case Riddler) and instead doing it for the hope of the people of Gotham. Keep in mind this is a year 2 batman, so bruce hasn't fully found himself yet, hence to why he makes mistakes as batman. Robert's version of bruce also shows how committed he is towards batman therefore, he loses himself in the process of becoming batman. I'm willing to bet the 2nd movie is him trying to find his footing in balancing the two sides of his life without letting one consume the other, and hopefully the villains chosen for that film will test Bruce's ability to keep his 2 lives separate, and deal with the parts that cannot be truly separated.

I think people who are saying “Robert Pattinson’s Batman wasn’t a good Bruce Wayne” are missing the point of character development, which is one of the strong points of this movie. In this version of events, Pattinson is a young Bruce Wayne who’s bitterness towards his parents’ death and the state of Gotham has led him to become reclusive and antisocial. His motivation to be Batman is purely self-serving. Everyone is scared shitless of Batman, including innocents. Meanwhile, while he’s ignoring his parent’s financial and political empire, the mob and corrupt officials have swooped in to fill the power vacuum. He learns this fact the hard way throughout the whole plot. By the end of the movie, he learns that he must become more than “vengeance” if he wants to fix Gotham. He has to become the hero. The whole ending scenes of him leading people to safety rather than just beating the shit out of bad guys is symbolic of this transition.

@drewb1979

I think the people defending this iteration of Bruce Wayne are missing the point. Why does he ignore his parents' financial legacy and only pursue vigilante justice? This isn't really explained. Did Alfred really only teach him to fight? In all other Batman stories, Bruce Wayne is a billionaire philanthropist who does everything he can with the Wayne name to better the city. The point of his vigilantism and how he justifies that to himself, is that despite all that it's never enough. Even the most powerful man in Gotham can't stop organized crime lawfully when the systems are so corrupt, and this movie fails to illustrate Bruce's philanthropic and good-natured character in lieu of this new vision of a nihilistic and vengeful crusader. That's why people say he's not a good Bruce Wayne.

I would’ve liked a more egotistical Riddler where he thinks he’s superior to Batman and everyone in Gotham because he thinks he’s smarter like in the Arkham games which is his ultimate downfall of him being caught in that medium instead of him going mental and seeking vengeance through revealing the truth, killing the corrupt, and idolizing Batman. I thought he was a little bit over the top I laughed whenever he started screaming or moaning through his gimp mask 💀 EDIT I feel like I would like his character more if I knew they were setting him up for a sequel. Near the end of the film he is told the harsh truth that him and Batman aren’t on the same page and his ego took a hit so if they have him manifest into an egotistical Riddler the payoff would be way better.

i gotta say about the batman taking lives thing, i think that's part of his character growth throughout the movie. at the beginning, he is vengeance. he'll stop at nothing to get revenge on those he feels have wronged him or gotham as a whole. but by the end, i think he's starting to get his moral compass straight, per the "this city is wounded like me" speech in the final scene. a key part of the film is batman going from being consumed by vengeance (ie literally referring to himself as vengeance for the first half of the film) to a true hero. the hero gotham needs. this also works for his emo persona as bruce wayne. even out of the suit, he's still consumed by batman's focus on revenge. maybe in the next film he can separate himself from that fully and get closer to the bruce wayne we all know and love

I actually really like the brooding Bruce Wayne. It's always annoyed me that Batman is supposed to be a dark, troubled man, but once he takes the costume off he's a confident playboy. It always made it feel like being dark and conflicted was a part of the gimmick, like it wasn't genuine and was just something he played out when he was Batman, almost as an obligation. So whenever people talk about how dark and brooding Batman is as a character I've always seen it as a major reach. It usually feels like (at least in the live action films) he's brooding and dark simply because he's Batman, and not that he himself is troubled or conflicted in any way. That's just always been how I interpreted it. So it's nice to finally see a live action Batman that feels like an actually tormented man and not a millionaire *playing* a tormented man.

Small detail that I loved... the fact that he has such heavy and lumbering walk. We're so used to Batman lurking in the shadows and sneaking up on people (which he does do at one point). While he uses the shadows to his advantage, he WANTS criminals to know he's coming. It just adds to the fear that the criminals feel. That was an awesome addition.

I think Robert Pattinson did a fantastic job as both Batman and Bruce Wayne. Everything felt grounded in reality, and we've never seen a Bruce Wayne like this, and I think the lack of disconnect between the two is another reason it felt so real. Batman is Bruce, and Bruce is Batman. Seeing Bruce grow instead of seeing him already in the groove is a great move imo.

I love how every time you see Bruce Wayne he seems like he's falling apart. He's not striking a healthy balance; he's basically destroying himself. Also worth mentioning, in the car chase Batman was trying to avoid hitting people; it was Penguin that was causing all that havoc and when Batman finally catches up he flips his car, likely out of sheer rage over Penguin throwing so many people under the bus to save his ass. The reason Batman was so desperate to catch Penguin was because he was convinced Penguin was hugely important to solving the Riddler case, hence why he kept chasing him. I can see why that'd be a turnoff for some though lol

I think Batman’s naivety to his role and his lust for vengeance explains why his actions sometimes don’t correlate with his explicitly stated beliefs (like in the car chase.) He feels like he has to prove something to his enemies rather than do what he actually knows is right, and that pettiness builds upon the point of him not yet being solidified in his role as a protector

I personally felt that Robert Pattinson’s lack of distinction between Bruce Wayne and Batman kind of encapsulated one of the biggest issues that the character faces in the movie. Bruce is getting so wrapped up and obsessed with being the Batman and solving the Riddler issue that it’s seeping into his personal life and he’s struggling to keep it balanced, which culminates in the injury of Alfred during the explosion of Wayne Manor. Hell, all the characters constantly remind him “Bruce, you’re doing nothing” and I thought it was really telling about the obsession that he’s facing regarding the Batman alter ego.

It was as if he was goading Batman into a mistake or a confession to get him to go to hell with him. Batman almost cracked but he didnt. I also think the Riddler honestly doesn't care about Bruce being Batman and vice versa. He doesn't see Bruce he just sees Batman. I think it is fair to say he knew he would never get Bruce (killed) because Bruce (Batman) is too smart to fall for bomb mail (sorry Alfred). Bruce was a decoy to let him off the hook the end game was always him and Batman celebrating on getting the crooks out in the light and exposed in the end. It’s really cool to see this new, “fresh faced” Batman. His equipment is both advanced and makeshift. The Batsuit is very clearly the 1.0 version. The original prototype before years of upgrades. The Batmobile is even more makeshift, essentially just being a glorified Baja Truck in black paint. I jokingly called it the Ghettomobile because of it’s borderline cobbled together appearance. Yet despite the fact that I thought I’d hate it and its rough exterior, it’s one of my favorites through raw presentation alone. It’s more living monster than supercar. Emerging from the shadows with a sound that’s like the wail of a banshee mixed with the roar of a lion. It’s fucking awesome. Also Bruce is clearly still stuck completely in the shadow of his family’s death and Robert does a really good job of portraying that. As critical said there is no distinction between Bruce and Batman in this movie. Which is because the facade of Bruce hasn’t been created yet. Robert completely proved me wrong. I thought he’d be a terrible Batman, but after seeing it I can honestly say he does a lot of things as good or better than Bale. He’s absolutely great and a perfect fit for this particular version of Batman. However the one who really steals the show is The Riddler. The best Batman stories are the ones where the mystery solving comes first. This is the first live action movie where that is taken to heart and it wouldn’t be possible without the Riddler. Who’s very similar in his presentation to the Zodiac Killer. Leaving behind cryptic clues and cyphers, all while taunting his pursuers nonstop. Reveling in their inability to crack his codes. I wouldn’t say he beats Heath Ledger’s joker, but he certainly gives him a run for his money. He’s creepy, competent and always one step ahead of those trying to stop him. Essentially he hits a lot of the same notes. If they have more stories like this to tell, I’d be happy to see a continuation. However no matter if that happens or not, this movie will still be great. It’s completely self contained and tells it’s own story. Which is a blessing in and of itself.

A world of true evil and darkness which never truly seizes to stop. Additionally, the music in this also really resembles something you would usually see in a horror movie and it's just incredible how well it brings the whole movie together since we, as an audience, feel the fear that criminals feel when they see the bat-signal or when being introduced to the villains. I’ve been hearing a lot of the same complaints about how there’s no difference between Batman and Bruce Wayne in this movie, and I personally have to disagree with the complaints. They very clearly were going for this, and the whole point was to show that this a Bruce Wayne who was never able to cope and deal with his demons and his past, and he no longer wants to be Bruce Wayne, he no longer is Bruce Wayne, he is simply Batman. He doesn’t like being Bruce Wayne, and they even establish that in this universe Bruce Wayne is a recluse and doesn’t ever come out into the public. So personally I thought it fit this version of Batman really well and I personally disagree with the complaints about it. The only true complaint I have about the movie and it’s not even technically about the movie is that they put out way to many trailers and to many clips from the movie, it didn’t necessarily ruin the movie but they just showed way to much that would’ve been so much better if they hadn’t been shown in the trailers.

Only by leaving the shadows and becoming a beacon of light and hope (the last image of the people following him) does he remove himself from the cesspool of Gotham crime and become a true force for change, unlike riddler.

My favourite scene was when The Batman was talking about fear, how he is hidding in the shadow, nobody knows where he is. The scene builds up the respect

Batman and Bruce Wayne’s being the same is one of the point of the movie. Alfred says this many times and the riddler opens his eyes at the end about it. Spoilers: When Alfred said he set up a meeting for Bruce but Bruce rejected it to do Batman stuff, later Bruce is dressed up and Alfred is excited to see that he is making an appearance but dissapoints him by saying “the riddler will make an appearance that’s all it is” Lastly. Riddler says the Batman is your real face jus tlike when I had my mask I could be the real me. Opening Batman’s eyes to the fact he is having a negative influence on Gotham and himself

Huge favorite moment of mine was when he understood He needs to be Bruce as much as he needs to be batman. He can't be one person. It was shown with the club and bouncers. In suit he wasnt allowed inside but being bruce he got instant access. So it means he needs to be Bruce while being batman at nights. He can't be batman without Bruce.
