It very much is that important. Its the first major win for the UNSC in a real pivotal way, it lays the ground work for the great schism and the prevention of the halo array being turned on. Truth and Regret were aware of humans connection to the Forerunners, it wouldn't be impossible for them to drag a prisoner to turn it on

The UNSC already knew about the covenants hierarchical leadership, even if they didn't have full knowledge of its inner workings. The Pillar of Autumns original mission was to find and capture a prophet to leverage against the covenant. Not only that but the master chief was already a well known war hero leading into Halo CE, even if the events of the games only further increased his mythic status.

Welllllllll, it’s not really a major victory in terms of numbers, all but like three UNSC units were lost, the enemy senior officer along with at least one ship survived, the covenant wouldn’t have been able to use the ring as a weapon without humans- but they didn’t know (the prophets knew but nobody else) so even if they win they can’t use the ring. Honestly, if they discover the ring without humanity, the covenant either dissolves because the prophets could not use the ring to start the great journey by themselves, or they are wiped out by the flood, making the covenant decide whether to glass the ring in order to contain the parasite or just quarantine it so they don’t harm it. Honestly if the UNSC is wiped out the covenant is going to split on either the flood issue detailed above or by the great journey not starting when they find the sacred ring
