Perfect comment. One came my way (sale through a friend), an oldie 1100 with lots of miles (90K), needs a little work, but seems to be well cared for otherwise. The fit was a little painfully short (my legs are long) but otherwise I loved it for the power and the protection from the wind. Just wondering how bad it could turn into down the road with expensive parts.

One thing you failed to mention is the ESA. It is easy to overlook because it works seamlessly without requiring intervention on the part of the rider. I frequently ride two up with full luggage including top case when touring. This calls for a dramatically different suspension setting than one rider with empty cases. On my previous bike, a 2012 GS with aftermarket suspension (TFX), it was a real pain changing the preload (30 turns!) when I went from just me on the bike and my full load touring set up. I no longer have to concern myself with this. This was a game changer for me.

Jed makes the point. I’ve had two RTs now and the way the thing handles defies physics. You point and it goes, it gets you out of trouble with no fuss. The only issue having one of these is you get on anything else and it feels primitive. Test drive one, you’ll be shaking your head in disbelief when you get off. It’s other worldly, it really is.

Had a test drive last week and it was quite disappointing to be honest. Handled like a big boat and the suspension in ‘road’ mode was way to soft and in ‘dynamic’ to harsh. Had loads of wind buffeting and couldn’t set the windscreen in a acceptable setup. Drove for a hour and switched to a GS Adventure right after and it was a day and night difference. All the issues I had with the RT vanished. No buffeting, great suspension, handled like a naked bike.

My GSA with a small spoiler on the windshield protects me pretty well from the wind. I sit in a nice bubble of calm with the wind just skimming the top of my helmet, enough to provide some air and not cause buffeting. I also changed the seats out as mines came with the rally seat and I have done thousand mile days in that thing without even a hint of a sore bottom! A point on handling is that changing tyres to road 6's transformed how it felt. I don't know how it compares, but that could certainly be a big factor. I haven't tried an RT, but so far the GS is absolutely the best bike I have ever ridden. Some of the tech from the RT though would be nice. Specifically the adaptive cruise control, larger screen and central locking.... But I really can't complain... I won my GSA in a raffle!

I have been shopping the BMWs and I think I'm going for a late 2022 or an early 2023 R1250GSA. We currently ride a 2017 Versys1000LT and I find that the brakes and suspension is greatly lacking for anything more than a couple hours 2up riding. The wife and I ride 2up 99% of the time and the size and weight capacity of the GSA makes more sense for us. Our day-rides are normally 8-12hr days so the extra comfort and greater suspension configurations is key. Another thing, is that I'm a taller guy (6'3" 200lbs) with long legs, the RT felt a little cramped to me. Great video, lots of helpful info!👍

Get a custom seat made up by Russell Day Long and ask them to make it for you in tall configuration. You may have more buffeting of the helmet, but your legs will bother you less. I stop on my RT every 60 -75 to 90 minutes, get off, walk around, rub my butt to relieve hotspots on the stock seat, and rehydrate. 6'5" and 280# on a 2022 RT.... zero regrets, the bike just does everything I need it to do. Get some fat aftermarket slip-on foam grips for it, if you have big hands.

This bike was an early 2022 build R1250 RT. Due to component shortages, it did not come with the radio amplifier, or radar Active Cruise Control. It's obvious by the left control module, not having the extra button on top, left of the red hazard button. BMW discounted these $600 for the radio delete, and I don't know how much for the non Active Cruise Control. Since this was filmed in Los Angeles, with traffic in pretty much all of Southern California, they aren't missed. I don't miss them one bit on my 2022 Alpine White R1250 RT either. Typical of a new BMW, the shifting is a little clunky for 12 to 15000 miles, they smooth up nicely once ridden a bit, otherwise a little notchy. I find the quickshifter feature, once your've read the instructions on how to operate, to be quite slick shifting on mine, and getting better all the time. I'm currently at 5500 miles on mine. I've ridden mine all throughout the Santa Monica Mountains roads and canyons, lots of Angeles Forest and San Gabriel Mountains, and Los Padres National Forest paved roads, as well as many of the passes in the northern Sierras between Mammoth Lakes , Yosemite, clear up to South Lake Tahoe, and the bike is the best I've had the honor of riding, out of all of them. Immense torque for it's engine displacement of 1254 cc's, and the HP really kicks in much above 4500 rpm with quite acceptable acceleration rates.

It has not. 👍🏼
@Ppilot71 Жыл бұрын
@@TheJedRides Yes, JED it is fortunate that we have many different choices. The DCT is a personal thing, I have not met many people that don't like it. I find that when doing slow controlled maneuvers in tight spaces like a parking lot, when you "feather" the clutch to maintain steady forward "SLOW" speed, it is difficult with the DCT; I had to maintain acceleration with brake engaged to keep it from free wheeling and throwing off your balance. It's just me. The Harley besides the weight, its not a sporty bike (again my preference) but the other big issue (I live in Miami; in the upper 80's and 90's most of the year and humid) was the temperature from the engine burning my right leg where I have some nerve damage from diabetes, and it was unbearable, the position and comfort was great, but many other issues like not being able to take the panniers off to bring into the hotel room (same with the GoldWing). Though the RT is relatively "light" for the category, as I get older, I find myself valuing (and missing) the "reverse" to get it out of my storage and other times when you need to backup (same with the Harley). A few of the newer features that weren't available then were the magic wheel on the left side, and also the now, very modern digital display. Keyless and central locking are cool, but not urgent for me. The new bikes are water cooled, which isn't a concern for me, as mine (airhead) has never got into a hot zone, although we've done some desert riding. Hello, thanks for the video. You’re seemly on the same page as me. I had two GS’s , first the 1200 an after, the 1250. They were both very good bikes but when I spotted the 2021 RT with the adaptative cruise control, the heated seat, the central locking system, I said “ let me try the bike…” I did it and it was astonishing for me:- More comfort in every environment, city streets, on every type of road (except off road, but I never went with the GS anyway), and that massive wind shield cuts all the wind noise from you and from your helmet, like the GS’s couldn’t perform, ever. On the RT you lift the wind shield, you just listen to the sound of the engine running as you ride the bike and that noise is music for my ears. No more wind noise like I had always on the GS’s and every other bikes in general. My wife use to enjoy the GS back seat with the top case there, she was in a higher position to see everything in front of us. But after changing to the RT she said she feels even better at the back seat. It is a larger seat and the aerodynamics of the bike is felt by the passenger too. So, The bike costs a little more money but definitely worst it. The lights are of a supreme quality, everybody see you and if you find someone sleeping at the will you can always wake the m up by using the powerful horn which doesn’t leave anyone indifferent. So it is a mile muncher, but so easy to handle that it is good for the minor jobs too, of course. It can be your only bike if you want. It does everything like royalty! I love mine, and this one is a keeper! Note: By the way, I subscribed the channel with pleasure ✌️✌️✌️

I can't yet afford a newer RT but one day I'll upgrade purely for central locking. Thanks for the review, love your video, especially the 4K!😍

I’ve got a 2021 RT with all the toys in pearl white. At 55 I decided I’m not going off road. Living in the UK I’m visiting Norway and Sweden in July. For parts of the trip I will ‘blat’ alone the motorways at speed, and while being a tourist on tarmac I can’t think of a better bike. I’m bought the top box, which I don’t like the look of, but I need the extra space for clothing (I’m too old to wash stuff in a sink!). 2,000 miles completed, but love my toy! Thanks for the review!

Can't disagree I've never ridden the RT. My buddy rides an RT, its his choice for his ride. He loves it. I chose the GS for my ride for its versatility. I love it. Even so I am pretty sure I saw a couple of RT on the Dempster. So I agree. It is which one works for you for your ride. It makes sense the RT is the better handlining road bike, it is optimised as a fast or sport road touring bike and probably been the gold standard since forever.

You are correct, it comes down to an individuals decisions on where and how to ride. I myself have a '23 RT in my garage yet I went to the dealer to actually get a GSA. Do to wait times and the road riding necessary in the future, The RT made sense. I still want a GSA some day, but as I progress, I am really feeling the RS will join the RT in the garage before the GSA. Mainly as the asthetic looks, than actual adventure riding.. All of the boxers would do the job well, but as my wants, needs and tastes change with the wind, I would like them all. Would I get rid of the RT? Not on your life.

I own a 2020 RT and I completely agree with your assessment of the positive differences between these bikes if you ride Grey top roads. We pay loads of dollars for the tech and ride that BMW offers. They design these two bikes to offer choice depending on your riding preference. To me this means if you are a street only rider then the RT is the better choice. If you prefer the flexibility to venture off road, then the GS offers you that flexibility. As a 2020 owner, I do wonder if the options of TRT and the upgrades to the lighting would be worth the trade cost. Love to hear your thoughts on that.

I love the RT but where I live it makes a poor choice for the roads I take. In Italy, if you want to reach the hard to find places, the roads can be rough. I’ve seen perfectly good asphalt turn to potholes and collapsed asphalt or concrete in a matter of yards, on hills, curves too. Some roads go straight to gravel or even trails. Only a GS or other adventure based bike has the ability to handle the vast road changes I can encounter in Italy. If you only take the highways an RT is fine. And for many, that’s just fine. The RT is a great tourer but it’s limited to the better roads where the GS isn’t.

@ridicule352 жыл бұрын
Hello from Brittany France. I watched this video and usually I say to each his own. However I am a long time bmw owner ( 2x k16GT with 80000km between, 2x 1200RT with 160000km between them, 1x 1250 GSA with 32000km in two years). I gave up the K16GT’s to go to a GSA for some trail riding but also because it offers twice the suspension travel to the K16GT. I don’t ride highways. I love country roads, alps, other European countries where the tarmac isn’t smooth. 1250GSA gives you comfort neither the K16GT nor my current R1200RT is technically capable of delivering. I keep the current 1200RT/2008, now at 110000km, as my daily workhorse. It is ridden all year, every day, whatever the weather. I do about 30000km/year between these bikes. The RT is excellent. However it is not to be compared to a GS/GSA because they aren’t purpose built for the same use. I can’t take the RT off road. The first gear on the RT is long and a royal pain in traffic. The final drive on RT is better suited to long distance crushing at speed. The GS/GSA is slightly shorter because if you off road or carrying tons of gear, you don’t want to be doing this on an RT. Why chose one or the other? They two different purpose built bikes. Get both. I did. Have never looked back. If you had to pick one do it all bike, including off road, the GS/GSA is the only choice and this is proven by BMW’s sales figured worldwide. Concerning your point about GSA being too big with the longer range fuel tank, I think you have some personal limitations that aren’t a fair reflection of the GSA. They are off road capable. They are not ‘enduro’ type ´go anywhere any conditions’, especially not mud. Stick to what they designed for. The GSA has everything you speak of including heated seats since 2021. The position of the Garmin nav6 high up avoids you looking down when on the GS/GSA ( or my 1200RT). On the new RT/K16, that big TFT is awesome but you have to glance down. For a split second, your eyes are not road focussed. I dislike this. In terms of benefits vs risk, it’s more risk. You hit a pothole with the cast wheels of the RT, you risk a buckled rim. The spoked rims on the GS/GSA are way more stronger and fit for purpose and can take a harder impact before it buckles. The ground clearance on the GS/GSA is also far superior. The riding position and leverage of the bars on GS/GSA is far super to the RT. You will notice this especially in traffic where you can see way more ahead sat on the GS/GSA than the RT. As far as usage is concerned, if you sit on interstates or just blacktop, that’s comfortable, the RT is best. If you do offroad or ride with crappy road surfaces, you will appreciate the double suspension travel of the GS/GSA. Again, to each his own, but sometimes people say thing’s that just aren’t accurate and I use both bikes… just saying… cheers

Vernon, wow, thanks for the detailed reply, and apologies for the delay in responding. I think I agree with everything you said except perhaps the note seeing further ahead in traffic, but that's a minor detail. My only point, really, was that for my purpose the RT seems to be the better bike, and several months in I still feel that way. The title was, admittedly, perhaps a bit of click bait! It's a topic that many of us feel passionately about, and of course many of us will defend our own choices passionately as well. Ultimately, I just wanted folks to bring their opinions to the comments, which you have done. THANK YOU!

@@TheJedRides thanks for your response. Concerning the traffic, the overall ride height of the GS/GSA is superior to the RT/K series. This is normal as the trail bike has a higher ground clearance. I ride the same model since 2 months. I agree to all of you pros. But for me the biggest low is the noise of the boxer. If I ride with 100km/h and the windshield is in upright position, then I hear the extreme loud engine. If I cruise then I hear too much engine noise.
@TheJedRides2 жыл бұрын
Interesting - thanks for sharing your perspective. Perhaps because my other bike is a Harley Davidson, I find the boxer engine quiet at any speed!

That’s interesting! My last bike was a 2018 Triumph Speedmaster with 1200ccm and this one was quieter then the 1250 boxer.

Nice review Jed. I'm new to your channel, and enjoyed both videos I've seen of yours. I just picked up my new 2022 R1250RT with Option 719 (White Metallic) yesterday, and frankly can't get off the bike. Granted, I come from an old, grumpy, character-laced '96 Heritage Softail that would shake the fillings loose from your teeth, but the BMW is almost the perfect bike. If it came with an espresso machine, it would be perfect. I'm less than 60 miles in the saddle, but can't stop smiling. And...I haven't even played with all the bike toys that this bike features. All the best to you, and safe travels ahead. Best, John.

First of all I loved the video - being from Southern California but moving to Idaho in '94, it really made me miss the good old days on my '83 Suzuki GS 1100 going to the Rock Store, Mulholland, PCH, Ortega Hwy etc. Loved the LA footage. I also love that RT as well as the GS models and pretty much all BMW boxers. I ride a humble Wee-Strom myself and although it's quite tricked out, neither myself nor my bike will ever be in that league LOL. As far as the actual comparison, in which I heard you qualify "for me" several times, comparing the RT to the GS is apples and oranges. Of course a road bike that you are never going to take off road is going to be superior to an adventure bike which is of course built for that dual purpose and not a dedicated road bike. Someone who wants to ride off-road plus highway touring would obviously not choose the RT. Someone who wants to do sport touring on road only of course would not consider a GS. It's like saying that a Porsche 911 is better on the road than a Porsche Cayenne. Of course it is. They are both built for different purposes. Awesome video though and I subscribed to keep getting your numbers up. Thanks for doing what you do!

This is so helpful bro! I love recent videos made about this stuff. I'm shopping older RT's at the moment, just learning all my BMW lore. Been considering so many cheap used bikes, so much to choose from with great tech right now. Getting back into riding.

Thanks for the positive feedback, Drew, and good luck with the hunt for an older RT.👍🏼 My first BMW was a 2004 R1150RT, which I bought as a demo bike that year. It was a great bike, but it had, I think, what they call "servo" brakes, which cause a lot of reaction in the BMW community, mostly negative but actually some positive too. I think by around '07 they stopped using them.

@@TheJedRides I think I'm really leaning toward R1200RT era. There is a guy up by you in Hermosa actually with a 117k bike for sale for $3000. I'm half tempted to go hand him some bills tomorrow just to drive it around LOL
@TheJedRides2 жыл бұрын
I guess in that era you have a choice of oil or water cooled in the later years. I'm no expert, but if they are decently maintained these boxers should be fine for those miles. (You probably want to make sure the clutch is still good, or find out what it would cost to replace.)

@@TheJedRides My '03 K1200RS had servo-assisted brakes. Riding a 635 lb bike like a sportbike makes one appreciate formidable breaking force that could be applied with a single finger. It was the fastest & heaviest bike BMW built at the time of its release and it needed all the brakes it could get.

From your point if you what would you prefer for long travelling rides like four more than one 10,000 km which would be more comfortable which would be better in going down or up a mountain, which would be better for Bad asphalt
@TheJedRides Жыл бұрын
Hi Karem. For me, it is almost always the RT. The one exception in the scenarios you mention would be in the case of EXTREMELY rough pavement. In that case the GS/A’s suspension may prevail. Again, though, these are MY choices, based on my height, riding style, personal preferences. I could of course understand you or anyone else differing. Thanks for watching. 🙏

I differ on your opinion in regards to the handling vs the GSA I feel that the GSA handles better. What I like about my 22 RT over the GSA is the better wind protection ( electric windshield) , the taller gearing and the active cruise control. As far as comfort, I think the GSA was more comfortable, but didn’t offer as much wind protection. If I were to pick again, I’d probably stick with the RT. Both are great machines.

Thanks for offering that perspective. You're in good company with the perspective that the GSA is the more comfortable of the two, even if we differ on that point.

Great review and timely, looking at a ‘23 RT to replace my ‘06 Yamaha FJR. Hoping you ridden an FJR and can comment on the vibration between the two, I find the high frequency vibes of the FJR off putting. I came off a ‘98 RT for the FJR and wished I hadn’t 25 minutes into the ride home. The RT had a low frequency “throb” but it never put my hands to sleep, the FJR turns them to giant watermelons within minutes. I see comment on your vid indicating you also wish for less vibes, leading me to ask if they are off putting or just characterful? I don’t want another hand numbing ride for sure. I’ve owned over 50 bikes I still kick my self in the backside for selling that RT. Subscribed and Cheers!!!!
@TheJedRides Жыл бұрын
Steve, it's the latter -- characterful (good word) rather than off putting. Frankly, I don't notice it much any more because I am accustomed to it, but it is there. Sorry, no, I have not been on an FJR in many years.

@@s.ri.1020 I agree with you 100 percent, that and the K1600. Couldn’t find a new GW standard to save my life, not one of the many life time dealers I’ve established fantastic relationships with would or could hook me up. Disappointing... I bought a ‘23 BMW R18 Hundred Year Anniversary and kept the FJR. Love the R18 which has a beautifully unique riding personality and is just superlative looking to me. Be well.

I know it's too late to comment/reply now regarding your decision but to me (a former 2006/2nd generation FJR owner) it seems strange you found it as having disturbing vibrations; I suspect there was something wrong with yours - did you test-ride another FJR? With my FJR I used to do 2-3 consecutive days of 800-1000miles/day and I found it acceptable in terms of overall comfort (ok, I was in my late 30s back then, for sure that counts) and the vibrations (to me) didn't seem so present/disturbing. The next bike after the FJR was (and still is today) a GT 1600 (110.000 miles currently) and regarding the (lack of) vibrations I guess it has little competition; of course the model has its flaws like any bike but vibration-wise it's top-notch. In Sept 2020 I rented for an extended weekend a RT1250 (the first one with 'regular' dashboard); initially when jumping from the GT the vibration is 'veeeeery present' :)))) But to be honest at the end of the 1000+ miles weekend I got used to the vibrations and didn't find them so annoying; of course - once I jumped back to my GT it was suddenly like a day and night experience (the GT felt, in comparison, as driven by an electric motor). Still, based on my perception and senses, I would not say those 1250RT vibrations are tiresome. I did test in the past the RT1100 and 1200 and the vibrations (and the boxer self-'leaning' while sudden acceleration/deceleration) were significantly improved on the 1250RT. I would be curious though to test again the RT1250 on some 10+ hours riding days and see if those vibrations are tougher for the arms (and body in general) versus similar long days on the GT 😅

Hey Jed, would you choose a traditional cruiser like your Harley over the bmw 1250rt? Or the BMW? I’m trying to decide between the 1250rt and the Indian pursuit or is the K1600 a better comparison
@TheJedRides Жыл бұрын
I happen to love the FXLR S and also ST and I reviewed both on the channel. Neither really compares to the RT though. It’s apples and oranges. I think they are the best examples of cruisers and the Rat is the best example of a sport touring bike that can be purchased. It would be hard to chose between the two unless you know your style of riding is better suited by one or the other. The K1600 is a horsepower beast but in my opinion does not handle nearly as well as an RT. I’ve never ridden the Indian Pursuit. Please share your thoughts. 👍🏼

Silly me! After 4 RTRs: 1100, 1150, 1200hex, '17 1200RTW, I've got myself a triple black GSA with low suspension. It's pretty danged nice. I'm spending money on windscreens and aero bits trying to get it quieted down, but aside from that, I like the handling so far with 90/10 tires. With low suspension, I can have a fairly tall seat and still reach the ground easily. 630 miles so far. Time for 1st service. I tried the 1250 and didn't feel it had a lot more to offer above my '17 RT. While the GSA may or may not offer "more", it's certainly different. I won't be bored! 🥱

@@TheJedRides our Tesla has it and we love it! Also the 21 RT that I test rode had it. @TheJedRides2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Joe. There is definitely a buzz in the bars that I wish was not there. That said, whether I am simply accustom to it or immune to it, I’ve never found it intrusive or tiresome. In the best light, it’d maybe a symptom of one of the characteristics of the bike that I enjoy. As refined as this bike is in terms of suspension, braking, safety tech and creature comforts, there’s that old boxer engine tucked under the frame, still a workhorse of a power plant, still chock full of smile-inducing torque (105 foot pounds) that puts a smile on my face. The bike feels alive in a way that, for example, the K1600s do not.

@@TheJedRides That's good input. Every machine has it's own character that endears it to its owner. I've read some folks' complaints of the vibration/buzzing as numbing so thought I should ask about it. I ride harleys and the newer models have greatly reduced vibration. Plus I'm older and gotten spoiled and soft. lol I'm thinking of adding an RT to the garage. I think like you do and the combination of technology and the natural smoothness of the offsetting boxer design that is appealing.

@@joemosely5520 I love Harleys and always will. As an American, I am biased in their favor. I’ve uploaded a couple of videos about my two FXRs. I have ridden a number of bikes with the M8 engine. As much as I enjoy them, though, the RT is simply miles ahead, in my opinion, in performance and safety. Where I ride 95% of the time - canyons in/around Southern California, and at my age, that’s really important to me. I would love a Road Glide ST, but I just enjoy the RT too much to give it up as my primary bike at the moment.

hello, I just moved the the LA area from the North East. I am torn between the RT and the GS. I worry that the RT might not have enough airflow in the warmer summer months. What are your thoughts on this? Does it get too warm here for that big windscreen? Am I going to regret not having gotten the GS? Most my riding will be 2 up cruising and sight seeing. My offroad days are over.
@TheJedRides2 жыл бұрын
Hello, Helixx. Congrats on the move. In short, it sometimes gets too warm to ride here, but not because of the windscreen. Placed in its lowest positions, I get ample wind. That said, on days where the temperature outside is 95F + , no amount of wind will actually cool your body. You must consume enough fluids to replace those lost, and wearing proper gear you will most likely be too uncomfortable to ride. My two cents: if you will not be riding offroad at all, go for a GS only if you have decided you prefer the postureoif the GS to the RT. Otherwise, choose the RT.
