After two deadly crashes that killed 346 people and a worldwide grounding that lasted almost two years, the FAA is giving the Boeing 737 Max jets the green light to fly again. However, many are worried that the changes to the plane are not enough. Can the U.S. trust the revisions made to the jet and the software updates to the MCAS system?

People seem to forget that this plane had been flying hundreds of thousands of successful flights already. Even with the MAX's safety record, you still be more likely die on your drive to the airport. Give how scrutinized this air frame is now, it will probably be the safest plane in the sky. The standards for aircraft are way higher than any other form of transportation. I feel for the victim's family and they are right to be mad, but they are being a bit hyperbolic.

Just watched the Netflix documentary about Boeing (Downfall: The case against Boeing) and my biggest takeaway was GREED caused the downfall of this once great company and GREED is driving their current decisions. From what I read elsewhere in the past is the FAA got way too cozy with Boeing and allowed them to self-certify aircraft. They share in the blame by not being the advocates for public safety as they should be. This is their only reason to exist.

Pretty acurate. I just think that the documentary failed to show what Boeing, together with regulators, did to get the airplane flying (safely) again, which was to add another angle of attack sensor, on the opposite side of the nose, uptade the software so that if the sensors disagreee, MCAS will NOT engage, if the sensors agree that the angle of attack is high, MCAS will engange only ONCE and can easily get overwritten by the pilot. In case of divergent information from the sensors, the standard operating procedure is to declare and emergency and divert to the nearest airport. Given this information, maybe the public wouldn't feel so uncomfortable with the plane.

If I remember it right, the 737 maxes used larger engines and mounted them forwards. These changes altered 737 maxes envelope and made it hard (edited: harder, and are not as hard as fighters) to control, so they have to retro fit a computerized system to prevent it from operating out of the envelope. I don’t mind to having that system: most of the fighter jets will simply be “unflyable” without the similar system, but what makes me really angry is that Boeing was trying to cover it up.

I'm surprised no one is talking about the design flaw that is still present which crashed the aircraft. The engines are fixed slightly forward of the wings than before to fit the larger size of engines which leads to stalling of aircraft. No amount of software change is going to solve that unless the aircraft is lifted up slightly so that the engines could fit under the wings like on the 737NG. Afterall its a 50year old aircraft with new technology crying out loud for a new clean sheet design and not just some updates

Well...your car's engine has a flaw that cannot perform deceleration quick enough in case of emergency. Therefore they installs brakes. Your rear mirror cannot help you detect potential collision quickly enough, so they put rear parking sensors. These are all part of engineering. They are part of a system, and the most important thing is to ensure the system are robust, reliable and redundant so that no single point of failure or malfunction would cause a catastrophe.

Ahmed, The battle between STEM professionals and business leaders is constant. Doctors are constantly being overridden by insurance company executives with oftentimes tragic consequences for patients. Private equity firms have forced themselves into healthcare by purchasing large numbers of hospitals and then bending the laws, violating the law, or bribing politicians to change the law to allow those private equity firms to violate patients' rights. NASA lost two space shuttle to managerial malfeasance. In 1986, the Challenger blew up shortly after launch. The explosion was caused by an o-ring seal on a booster which failed due to cold weather at the time of the launch. One of the engineers in charge of designing the seals warned management no to launch but he was ignored by business leaders who knew nothing of the danger, or chose to ignore the warnings. The engineer was prevented from communicating with the right people to abort the launch until warmer weather arrived. The world is filled with know it alls who know little or nothing but who occupy high places. Those arrogant know it alls are not held responsible when they force a bad choice upon a STEM professional. Those leaders have the system rigged to enable them to boss other around and to blame others for their mistakes. This must stop if we are to see an end to tragedies such as these two 737 MAX crashes. The MAX is a good airplane. It flew for thousands of flights before these two crashes. The real problem was with a lack of pilot training so the pilots would know about how to deactivate AMCAS if it acted up, and reliance on AMCAS with only two AOA sensors, instead of having a redundant backup as well to aid the computer in authenticating the AOA indicator readings. At least one Airbus crashed into the Atlantic due to a problem with a similar system. Two more Airbuses had near crashes over the Pacific due to the same systems that brought down the first Airbus. The only thing that saved the two Airbuses over the Pacific was luck, altitude, and great piloting.

If they simply take the FAA certification I wouldn't be confident at all in the plane. I doubt that I could ever be confident to fly on THIS plane in the future. It even retrospectively makes one suspicious of other 737 planes. How many shortcuts have been taken that haven't yet caused a catastrophe? Other industries must pay the costs of the required regulation. To say that we cannot afford the regulation is merely saying we are not charging the actual cost of the necessary regulation.

I, for one, will actively avoid flying on the MAX even in cases where alternatives may be more expensive than a flight using the MAX. My peace of mind alone, as well as knowing I fly on a product not made by a company run by sociopaths, is worth the (unlikely) inconvenience of checking what planes an airline uses for my chosen flight. FAA defined that positive dynamic stability for an aircraft means two things: 1. In straight and level flight, the pilot can take their hands off (and autopilot controls off) and the aircraft continues straight and level flight. 2. In a flight that is not straight and level, the pilot can take their hands off (and autopilot controls off) and the aircraft recovers to straight and level flight by itself. I would like both the FAA and Boeing to declare that the Boeing 737 Max jets aren't limited by a narrow range of throttle settings to achieve positive dynamic stability.

The real issue with 737's was that the pylons were forwarded and upward(ed) from the original design to accommodate larger engines and changed aerodynamics. The software miss was a flaw that could be fixed, but the real issue remains that of retraining and re-orienting a very large body of pilots to these changes in handling the revised aerodynamics. The whole problem with this aircraft is that the new engines were too large and had to mounted further forward and higher up which significantly changes how the aircraft flies. This should not have been a big deal though because all you have to do is require the pilots flying to be properly trained on how to fly the aircraft... Apparently though it was a big deal because Boeing was afraid to lose customers, they thought customers would choose the Airbus alternative since they wouldn't have to retrain pilots and so Boeing implemented automated systems to get around that. The systems didn't have enough redundancy though and when they did fail it was catastrophic. I can't even imagine being the pilot of an otherwise perfect airplane that is nose diving because of software and there is nothing you can do about it... Terrifying... I like Boeing but they should be ashamed of themselves.

There was crash in Japan that killed over 100 people. They traced the cause back to a repair of the tail section where the repair used one row of rivets instead of the usual two rows. The Japanese inspector that approved the repair killed himself out of guilt. The American inspector at Boeing who approved it just said "it probably was unrelated to the repair." Different cultures.

20/20 beat Netflix, and soon Hulu for that matter, to the punch with presenting a phenomenal hour and 20 min episode on this tragedy, and I saw that a little while ago. While Netflix dove more into the corruption and business side of things, 20/20 really showed how helpless these families felt, and the strength they showed creating their own uprising. I will be watching Hulu's, but please check out 20/20's S46 E6 "Falling From the Sky"

Find an airline that doesn't fly them, or pick a route that this plane doesn't fly. They can and do swap plane types at the last minute for operational reasons, so even if you buy a ticket for one type of plane, you could still show up and find that it was replaced with a Max.
