I actually have this watch because of this feature. I do a lot of hiking in remote places where cell service isn’t always available, so this watch and functionality is my safety blanket. It’s not a cheap watch, but my life certainly isn’t cheap either.

Please check breitling website, they have a video there explaining how the emergency module works, you basically pull the nob and there is a coiled wire that works as an antenna, then it starts transmitting in an emergency frequency which your local airport can pickup and send rescue, They even request not to use it for mischief(imagine you use it and you got this huge rescue force land at your location just to find you eating cookie and drinking milk) this is high tech and a true innovative feature in my opinion also considering it uses satellite communication, It may save someone's life in an emergency situation, I would love to see more high-end watch makers use this feature on their watches because when the time comes that 10-20k watch can surely come in handy.
@CMyOnes9 жыл бұрын
So if someone had this watch and survived a commercial plane crash like (MH370). A rescue would be sent? Does this watch work similar to a black box
@vinishshetty80559 жыл бұрын
CMyOnes hi, not like a black box but like a signaling device, It transmits at a specific frequency, you need to activate it manually by pulling the nob
@233kosta9 жыл бұрын
CMyOnes I think the more likely scenario for its use is a light aircraft suffering a manageable failure away from immediate help, i.e. fuel contamination in the middle of nowhere, or you lose electrics and ignition, so can't radio for help. You can just about land it, but you have no food, no water and no bear gun. SAR is likely on its way, but unless you climb a tree, they can only see the wreckage. If you're stuck there for more than a day, you need a water supply, so you _have_ to move away from the wreckage. Having a PLB on you means they can pinpoint your position and send a helicopter within visual range to pick you up right away. Otherwise the SAR spotter aircraft has to fly search patterns and go over the entire area. If there's no food or water supply nearby, you could die of dehydration by the time they get there. A "black box" on the other hand serves a different function. Actually, there are two - a cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and a flight data recorder (FDR), both of which are used to record events in the lead up to an incident. A secondary function in both is transmitting their location on the same principle as the PLB as well as with a pinger, which will be heard on sonar if the recorder ended up in a body of water. Both signalling devices are powered by batteries stored with the module and are activated if their connection with the main power source (aircraft) is severed or if a high enough load factor (i.e. over X Gs) is encountered. Batteries are certified for 30 days continuous transmission if activated within the service life of a module, likely more if they're brand new.

Interesting video. I don't think this watch or rather the frequency of the emergency beacon is effective in the U.S. and that was the reason the watch was discontinued. There were two version, one which broadcasted on the civilian emergency frequency and cost about $3600 and another in gunmetal which broadcasted on the U.S. military SAR frequency which cost around $6500. One you could purchase and the other was only available in group orders to government organizations. I just saw the new version of this was approved for sale in the U.S. to the tune of $15, 380 dollars. I got a chance to look at one at an upscale watch store in Virginia. An impressive watch, but much and I mean much larger than the older versions.

All commercial aircraft worldwide continuously monitor 121.5 on their secondary radio. If an ELT signal is received, we relay the information to Air Traffic Control who can follow up with SAR Facilities. If you are reported missing or are known to be in distress SAR units can still track 121.5/243 MHz for location finding. You are correct in that Satellites no longer track 121.5/243 Mhz distress signal due to new more reliable technology available. Newer ELT’s and technology transmit on 406 Mhz.

121.5 MHz is still the civilian aviation emergency frequency, at least in the U.S, as of today. Although I doubt it's different in the majority of the world.
@kristianwinkel77249 жыл бұрын
Most of the world has now changed to 406 MHz
@danm66659 жыл бұрын
+Kristian Winkel but 406 MHz is well beyond the the band used by aviation radio coms (~118-139 MHz). Using 406 MHz would mean that regular aircraft will not be able to hear an ELT going off, which is a setback.
@kristianwinkel77249 жыл бұрын
+Dan M true 406MHz cannot be monitored by aircraft, it is monitored by satellite and passed to a ground station who dispatches SAR. The satellite can triangulate the position to under 1NM so SAR aircraft already know your position. 121.5 can only be triangulated to 15NM at best and the satellites only cover 2/3 of the world... 121.5 can however be tracked by a direction finder on land or by aircraft......... 121.5 only transmits .1W giving it a max range of 1700NM but 406 uses 5W giving worldwide coverage. 406MHz beacons are also coded to the user and can contain contact details for yourself and next of kin, 121.5 cannot Note: aircraft are not required to monitor 121.5. Note: as of Feb 2009 121.5MHz satellites were turned off and are no longer monitored by SAR organisations. Note: most 406 beacons also transmit 121.5 to be used as a homing beacon by aircraft.
@danm66659 жыл бұрын
+Kristian Winkel damn satellites are everywhere. First GPS and now ADS-B and this. Although it seems very convenient, I don't know if I like such reliance on them. I don't know why, but I get this feeling of precariousness when I hear about such systems. Maybe I'm but an ignorant oaf.
