The Dahomey people's entire economy was based on slavery. Human flesh was consumed as much as livestock during that time. The Dahomey used female warriors because they had lost too many men in the slave trade wars. They were the equivalent to today's child soldiers. The Dahomey also fought to try and keep the slave trade going. They were a nation that embraced the worst and most barbaric aspects of humanity.

The Dahomey should be VILIFIED not GLORIFIED. Prior to being sold to Europeans, slaves were forced to march in circles around the "Tree of Forgetfulness" so they would lose memories of their culture, family, and homeland. The purpose of this ritual was to prevent the spirits of the slaves from returning and seeking revenge against the royalty of Dahomey. It failed, I remember!

Spartans shouldn't be glorified either and yet they're on mainstream media portrayed as heroes. They had horrible customs and they practiced slavery. @@showa546 Read Barracoon and compare that to anything youve heard about the Spartans. Were the Spartans harsh? Yes. All empires of note are harsh and ruthless. But were they treacherous and stupid enough to sell their own countrymen and then finally tribes people for guns, liquor, mirrors and hands in marriage to white men? You also leave out that debt slavery or forced labor for crimes did exist in ancient and modern Persia well after that “official” decree. 100% agree. Did you know the The Kingdom of Dahomey was responsible for 20% of all the slaves captured in the Transatlantic Slave trade. A great percentage of the slave population in the US, West Indies & Caribbean was a direct result of this Kingdoms involvement in the slave trade. The Dahomey worked in conjunction with European traders and profited off the capturing and selling of enslaved blacks. The Dahomey Kingdom became rich and very powerful as a result. Hollywood is now trying to make the Agojie (Woman King army.) look like super heroes....being fully aware of the popularity of Marvels ...the Black Panthers ( Dora Milaje ).....Black Panthers Female Royal Guard. The Dora Milaje is based off of the Agojie (Woman King army.) Of Course Hollywood is not going to mention this Kingdoms role in enslaving and profiting from the slave trade. Or that this Kingdom would often feature the mass execution of enslaved people for human sacrifice in Vodun ceremonies. I think something that profound should not be omitted or brushed aside... I cant glorify that ..its not about hating. in my opinion....If you are going to do a movie like this you need to spit the entire truth..just sayin.

Yes African had slavery amongst themselves, but did they ensue mass genocide when they sold their people to Caucasians? Greed, profit, was the part of all monarchist led systems. The point is the Europeans came looking as the criminals they sent as indentured workers to Australia and the American colonies couldn't hack it. They created a monster! I thought it was the Moors? I've read that it was the Moors. So much African history has been rewritten after the invasions of the European Colonizers and enslavers that it is close to impossible to trace back to those eras in our history. My old African American teacher in high school said our history has been hidden, rewritten, looted and stolen. So much so that most is fabricated. She was still teaching European history in African history because there wasn't enough information to give whether it be accurate or not. That was 2 decades ago and I still feel lost. I wish you can give me a bit more incite into this once vast kingdom considering the movie just came out in which everyone is mad and disdained about it glorifying racism and slavery.

I think there's this idea in the west that if you criticise a tribe in Africa, you're criticising the whole of Africa. Africa is a big place with many different races and tribes, this movie glorifies a bad tribe whilst ignoring the five tribes in the vicinity that were commonly victims of the Dahomey. Of all possible stories Africa has, they chose one of the worst tribes and tried to portray them as victims.

I did research on this about eight years ago. Just like you said, I learned that the women could not marry and only the king could sleep with them. They were girls who were groomed. We can't celebrate that. The Dahomey Kingdom was also the last kingdom to end the slave trade. If I remember correctly it was around the 1850s. What black people have gone through in America and during the slave trade in Africa at the hands of Europeans was horrible. However, we can't just ignore the part that Africans played in their own demise.

I of course read it with her in the evenings and learned a lot and was turned onto Hurston's work. I was completely scratching my head when Viola Davis was promising this as a sort of Black Female empowerment film. Honestly I can not believe she did not know the history of this tribe and it's connection to slavery. Is it possible these writers who wrote the story promoted it to her and she didn't take the time to do ANY research? It find that absolutely impossible so what was her goal? She aligned herself to them by taking the staring role. Really odd.

So there were maybe 100 movies done about Queen Elizabeth I, glorifying her when she oversaw a kingdom that burned people alive, drew and quartered them, fighting the French with everything she had with England engaging in Barbaric tactics against France, Films about France being glorious in the past while they engaged in the same barbarism with their neighbors and their OWN people draw no calls for a boycott. Yet here we are with black folks tearing down a film, not even understanding the history of the entire continent. ALL African kingdoms had slavery ALL kingdoms exploited their OWN CITIZENS. This is the plight of humanity and bad character in our species. Africans didn't have a concept of being "BLACK," They were Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba, Fon, Cru etc....The Yoruba which was a great kingdom helped the British burn down Benin City. Mansa Musa the richest man in human history, king of ancient Mali walked 10,000 slaves across the dessert, carrying his gold to Egypt. Is he evil ? Do we not deserve to see movies about him? This is history, nuanced and complicated. And AA don't understand enough about Africa to digest the complexity of history. Again they were NOT BLACK, they were FON people from Dahomey. They were RUTHLESS as were the ROMANS and VIKINGS who are celebrated in film over and over. This expectation of us needing to have a PERFECT narrative is ONLY required for us by us. I bet you won't be boycotting a VIKING or ROMAN film. Tear this down so you can keep receiving slave drama's, Soul singer biopics and tired Martin Luther King, singing on a Freedom Bus biopics SMH

I am yoruba. There is a story of one of the yoruba kingdoms going to war with the empire of Dahomey. The soldiers ended up fighting the Amazons of Dahomey and did not realize it. They were defeated but captured some of the Dahomey soldiers and retreated to their camp. Intention I guess was to torture them to retrieve information for the war campaign. When they stripped of the clothes of the captive. To there surprise they realised that they had been defeated by a female army. The next time they clashed with the Empire of Dahomey. They were motivated fighters and did everything they could to defeat the empire. I think it was the egba kingdom. They lost the first round but made sure they won the 2nd round. The Amazons were the elite force that protected the king of Dahomey.

Thanks for this perspective. I have mixed feelings about the movie. It was well-made, but it does distort history by projecting 21st century sensibilities upon the Dahomey "Amazons,." It does reference the slave raids and beheadings, but fleetingly and in a highly toned down way. I might be mistaken but I don't remember any references to the hundreds of captives they would behead in Dahomey's annual ceremony. The story you related from one of their victims was a reality that wouldn't have made the movie characters very sympathetic. Again, my feelings are mixed. The Woman King is a piece of mythology loosely based upon history. If people want historical accuracy, Hollywood is the last place they should look. But, sadly, people often mistake what they see on the screen as the real story. Perhaps something good will come out of this in that people will read books such as the one you recommended. God bless.

After Glele death Behanzin took the Throne and wanted to rewrite the contract to have more gain. But the French didn't want that because they wanted to stay on the first agreement which was at their advantage. King Behanzin didn't like that so he ask them to take the new terms or leave that's were the war begin. Slave trade wasn't an issue their. The definition of WARRIORS is exactly all of the points you are complaining about. We live in the reality of the AFTERMATH of all of the Continents messy trading & including the rulers part in capturing people that were enslaved for profit. The whole African continent was fighting not only each other, but the Europeans, who had later agreed to carve up the place and to assume absolute control, after all of that. It’s nothing that we can go back in time and do anything about. We have now got a lot more resources to learn about what that period in history was… I can’t undo my Family’s pain if anybody’s Family’s pain by looking back and blaming one group of Warriors. The shock for many people is mostly the extent at which Africans on the Continent depended upon the wealth they got from their part in ‘The Slave Trade’. It is all very painful. There is almost no point trying to single out one Woman Warriors as the ultimate bad man. They were Warriors doing what Warriors did. We are here to learn from the past. All I will say is the movie itself was good viola davis was great in her acting abilities and she looked great while doing it. She made 56 look nice, With that said its not accurate. They tried to make the dahomey more abolitionist when it came to slavery, like they had an awakening moment to say we need to do better when in reality they were raiding neighboring cities and villages. Expanding their Empire And those that were taken captive, whether they'd be men children and women they were sold into slavery. Now I say this after doing my own research online who's to know what the mindset was of the dahomey back then, maybe they did and were on the verge of stopping their part in the trans Atlantic slave trade. History is a giant its easy to criticize after the journey has been made and you're looking back over the hill at the path that was taken to get were you are today. All I can say is for a civilized empire they should have known better than to sale humans. I still enjoyed the movie for the entertainment value not for the accuracy's or lack of them you should go into it with the mindset of an entertainment action movie type situation that's all. Still love viola davis she can do no wrong in her acting career 😍Lashana Lynch was my movie crush John Boyega played his role nicely.
@jlawsl
@jlawsl Жыл бұрын
I agree with some of that but, then I would also say this: America, as a civilized country should have known better and we do know the mindset of the people back then. Most of the USA and before, when they were colonies, had already outlawed slavery. There was a civil war to stop it, yet we still hear about it and things like reparations today. Should descendants of slavery in the USA and other countries on this side of the world be paid reparations from the nations that descended from those kingdoms? It would make sense to pay a large portion of it because they were the original criminals. It is a weird question to ask, but these days, information is more available then its ever been so that we can call out bad history when we see it. In 1915, Birth of a Nation was hugely successful as it portrayed President Lincoln as being friendly to the South and portrayed the Ku Klux Klan as protectors of America. Among other things, it is said to be the most racist movie every made in America. For the time, it was well made, revolutionary in filmography and considered groundbreaking in the movie industry. That is where we run into an issue. Just because something is well made, had a moving musical score and good actors does not mean that the message behind it is terrible. Its historic revisionism to make the some of the most reviled groups in history into heroes and it effects the common person's thoughts and views on the subject. The normal, layman does not bother looking up a film's history if it says it is based on "historical events". They accept it as a source of actual history. That is where we come to the Woman King. In the exact same way that Birth of a Nation made a group of former slave owners and racist into the heroes of the movie, the Woman King has done the same. This film glorifies a kingdom and actual historical figures that warred with, enslaved, sold and conducted human sacrifice upon the people of the surrounding lands. Not only does it lie about the role of Dahomey in slavery but it also elevates them as heroic defenders against European slavers. When in reality, it was the British that blockaded their ports to slave trade when they insisted that they wanted to continue and it was the French that finally beat them militarily and abolished it. Then, in Hollywood fashion, they are shown to be far more effective then they were against the French or British, which beat them crushingly in every major engagement. TLDR: In my opinion, one could say that The Woman King is a veiled modern version of Birth of a Nation in its historical accuracy and the portrayal of evil people as heroes.

Dear Internet-experts of the Danhomey kingdom : it is not a documentary, it's just a movie. Viola and the production made a terrible mistake by not telling people it was a fiction and by guilt-tripping people into watching it. But also it seems people were already looking for a reason to express their hate of the feminist cause. Anything is good for them to practice cancel culture. Ask yourself what is it exactly that is making you mad. Is it worth it ? Will it still be worth it in 1 month ? Many things were inaccurate in the movie, but is it the first time this happens ? In thousands of "traditional" movies where women characters were treated like shit, and men's power exagerated, nobody seemed to be upset. Now people are complaining about feminist movies tearing men down to build female characters up. It must suck to be treated like women have been for ages, we can relate to this part. As a descendant of Dahomean culture currently living in Benin, I know and we all know the movie was fictionnal. No real Danhomènou can be called Nanisca, queer people if they existed would have to hide and no queen (no other human) sits near the King's throne or on the same level as him. They sit on the ground. And no woman in that time would dare to speak back to or behind her man, let alone the King. Oh they agojie were not that strong they got their asses whooped by the french. Well think again. Machetes v rifles, who wins ? Ooh Dahomeans were savages, there were violent, they sacrificed human. Yes we know. Look up the origins and ethymology of the very name Dan-xomin. It means "In the belly of Dan". Read the story, at least I hope that one was told right on the internet. Violence was not something they were ashamed of. They saw it as bravery, they used it to keep enemies at bay. They ruled by fear. Just like countless tribes all over the world did. Yes they traded slaves. And for any trade to take place, you need offer and demand ! Visiting the slave route at Ouidah and being told a part of the history or reading internet articles written by the colonizers does not make you an expert. What are y'all perfect people stoning Viola for really ? Is it because of the way she presented it or is there some deeper reason and this event happened to be a catalyst ? Are you complaining about the Vickings or Genghis or Pre-columbian human sacrifices or even what the US did to native americans? Are you boycotting every single movie romanticizing those things or is only this one? People are just repeating what everybody is saying it what they read on internet to sound smart. But how bored do we have to be to take this at heart and put so much energy in destroying "a movie" when women are killed in Iran for BS and there's a litteral war in Ukraine ? It's only a movie, this is entertainment ! If you know the absolute truth because you were there during the time of Guezo, or if you're suddenly an expert in the history written by the colonizers, good for you. I'm a beninese and I'm not sure I know the whole truth. I was not there and what was written by the winners can be very deceptive, we know how this works. Not to say Dahomey people were perfect, far from that ! The walls of the King's palace were built with human blood. There were human sacrifices, slave trade, like in many other parts of the world. But is it really what y'all are pissed about? Is it the first time you hear about this ? Do you judge and boycott every movie based on the past of the tribe depicted ? Why suddenly now with this particular movie ? Do you feel threatened in any way ? Started with She-hulk, right ? And then Ariel, then this. Ask yourself why. People, it's Hollywood ! It's a business. How is any of this even a surprise to you ?

This either shows how ignorant Hollywood thinks the public is or how ignorant Hollywood are or both. The movie is false is so many ways; The King noticed them and employed them as bodyguards is the consensus of how they came into being. The started out with about 1,000 or so and grew to 4,000. The other myth is there were no male soldiers which is not true there were about 60/40 split. They didnt use swords but did use rifles and cannons. The Kingdom also fought to keep their slave trading empire when slavery was abolished they fought against the French, English and Americans who also were asked by other smaller African nations to help them against the Dahomey kingdom.

People and kingdoms used to be very vicious throughout history. Anyone who is alive today is very likely to be a descendant of a kingdom which was once powerful. Some of you should be thanking Viola Davis because if she didn't make the film you wouldn't know anything about them because you won't read or study, and cosign on what everyone has to say. It's interesting that the history of these women has been sitting around for 200 years, no one says anything. Viola Davis comes along and suddenly people are trying to be opinionated when they knew absolutely zero about their history. Now it somehow becomes this individual who made the video and Hollywood's responsibility to tell you about our history. And the posture and attitude that some of our people adopt after watching this video should make some of you more humble because Viola isn't the problem, it's your own lack of knowledge. All of a sudden one video makes some of you a scholar. Study for yourself, read and research for yourself and stop waiting beat up Viola Davis and beat yourself up first for not studying. It wasn't a documentary and never tried to be. If you didn't see it, and the person who made the video didn't see it, you must learn to become compelled to do your own research. Get used to that because all you are doing is adopting that person's position, and you still don't know anything. Stop second-handing other people's info and start studying more often because everything you're talking about happens everyday in the world among our own people. Our people kill our own people, sex traffic our children, sell drugs, gang violence, but people are cool with all of those types of films. We just can't be satisfied one way or the other.
