Thanks for another interesting video Shane! It's great that you still have those blueprints, that's great reference material.

Thanks spaceghostohio7989! Well, it will start slowing down next week, but I filmed on Labor Day weekend, so we were quite busy...about 580 visitors on Sunday and 390 on Labor Day. Saturday had about 400, so it was a great "wrap-up" weekend for us! Though we're open through mid-November, things will start to slow down during weekdays for sure.

I am happy to see people comin gout to the park. Need all the ticket sales that can be gotten! You and the camera are quickly becoming a legend! Keep up the great work! I've always felt the Cold War era never gets enough love, WWII always seems to overshadow it is much of the naval history.

Thanks again, Bryce! With the interpretive year chosen for Sully as 1962, those stories will change! As mentioned in the video, I gotta secure those two 3"50s...and then the whole of the 01 level will be in true cold war configuration! I'll keep you and everyone posted!!

So true, Gary...an interesting deckhouse. I really need to get down to Kidd and walk her decks to get a true sense of Sully's original configuration!

Shane, for what you call at 4:39 a 'doghouse' could that enclosure be a darken ship vestibule? The shielded space on the other side has the smaller scuttle going below decks. If you look in the overhead just inside the non-watertight door to the weather deck, would there be removed fittings or weld points where a light shield (curtains?) would be placed?
@BuffaloNavalPark3 ай бұрын
Good thoughts roberthilton5328. Appreciate it. I will check out the overhead. To me, my first instinct is that someone constructed the "doghouse" here as we also have them on Little Rock as well. I'll do some more digging! Thanks for your contribution!

My step father served on board a Benson class. She was assigned to the Atlantic and was refit in late 1943. Her aft quintuple tubes were removed and 2 quad 40's were added to the aft end of the deckhouse. When she was reassigned to PacFlt, late in the war, she had another yard period where the quad 40's were removed and the torpedo tubes returned. I was always intrigued that 9:30 notwithstanding the need 9:22 8:55 or AA,
@BuffaloNavalPark3 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing! That is strange about adding the tubes back when the ship headed to the Pacific. Typical configuration for the Pacific is less torpedoes more AA. Late in the war, airplanes were the biggest threat in the Pacific. This is the reason that one of Sully's quintuple torpedo tube mounts was removed (July 1945) and quad bofors were added in its place. Thanks for sharing and for your support!

Interesting to hear about the changes here and why they were brought about. You really get an understanding of how incremental upgrades changed the ship and how they had to find space to cram in the additional equipment, even to the point where the ship ended up asymmetrical. Great to hear you're looking to source and bring back the 3" to try and further restore the ship with critical relevant equipment - it's not just about preserving what's already there, its also about trying to refit and improve the authenticity of the ship and the visitor experience.

Thanks so much, wurlyone4685. Appreciate your comments and support. One of those critical areas such as gun platforms brought about great changes to Sully. We can't go back after these mods, so we need the guns to fit the structure - not the other way around, like you state! Thanks again!

If/when you get the 1943-45 plans digitized, would you be able to make them available on your web site as publicly available research materials for those of us interested in the WW2 configurations of historical ships?
@BuffaloNavalPark3 ай бұрын
tronmcconnell4465, yes...that's the idea. The 1956 booklet of general plans is giving the digitizing company fits because of the way the book is made...it has a spine, and then fold out sheets, but then some are not fold outs, so they are taking their time with how best to do this without have to break the book into halves or quarters. It will be the same with this print! So, my goal is to make them available for a small fee on our website once they are scanned and back safe in the collections!

They were unshielded pedestal mounts. You can see the last one we have remaining aboard on the 02 level on top of the aft deckhouse...the two mid-ship ones were identical! Thanks for your support as always!
