Think about it for a minute . Ford is the benchmark. Every brand is chasing the little 302 with 400 and above cubic inch and then talking a bunch of smack when they out run it. Apples to apples Ford comes out on top every time hands down and not just a little on top. I am sure the butt hurt cream will start flowing but I am just giving you the facts and a history thats 40 years long building cars and racing in different arenas . There was a time when multiple 383s just couldnt run down my little 281 time and time again and I mean they werent even close. Its just like the 5.7 found in the Tundra for a reference. Nothing to brag about. If you were talking about the fpc in the 350, id say ok, theres not a lot like those. Technology has nothing to do with the displacement or the engine configuration. It has more to do with all the rest. Btw, DOHC engines are older tech than OHV engines. GM has been building DOHC v8s since the 70s lol. Nothing new there.
@chadkent12414 жыл бұрын
Totally with you on this brother. If you're unfamiliar with the engine Masters challenge it's the greatest engine builders in the country once a year meet at West Tech and given a loose set of rules they see which engine can make the most average power through their predetermined RPM band and the one-year(2013) the modular Motors were allowed to run against pushrod engines it was a clean Podium sweep for the Fords 1,2,3. The ls guys bitched so much after 2013 there's now two classes of engines being overhead cam and cam in Block. No two valve head can ever match the power production of a 4 valve head given the same cylinder dimension
@DavidVanVoris4 жыл бұрын
Chad Kent yes I saw some of it! Thanks chad
@shawnsanders94504 жыл бұрын
Well, OBVIOUSLY no 2 valve head can complete with a 4 valve head with the same bore. However, that's not how it works in the real world because a Modular/Coyote will never be able to get the same bore size so usually the LS and now LT stuff will flow more. LS engines can generate 454 ci with physical exterior dimensions smaller than a DOHC Ford. The LS stuff is just cheaper too. Now when you start cramming stupid amounts of boost at a engine I agree the DOHC Ford is better.

Coyote is SUPERIOR to the LS, now that's a bold statement! The coyote makes great HP per liter by design because of the DOHC/VVT design, HP = Torque x RPM and the math doesn't lie. Superior to the LS, in that way...to say that they're superior to the LS like you stated in your title without specifying in which ways is just incorrect. As tired as some people may be of hearing "LS SWAP!!!" like I am, the coyote is not flat out superior but in fact in a lot of ways its inferior to the LS family of engines. The coyote is physically larger making it more cumbersome and difficult to swap when the two are compared and not as user/builder friendly and that's the reason so many people go the LS route along with the cost of the unit, aftermarket parts availability, and sheer potential of the engines. Mild, wild, to insane the average gearhead can build whatever they want of various displacement and power levels and still have a strong reliable engine. I wish people would do their research and separate fact from fiction, I love building engines of all kinds and I'm not plagued with brand loyalty. Build/drive/race what you love but don't break your arm patting yourself on the back for doing so. I know I'll get flak from the Ford fanboys about this but I don't care, I've heard it all in this line of work "coyotes can't handle more than 600hp" "Chevy stole the LS design from Ford" I don't care, I love LS engines, I love my daily driver that happens to be a boosted coyote (built by me) and small block/big block Fords and Chevys, even some old school Mopars. I'm an educated gearhead, feel free to be creative in the comment section.

I owned a coyote mustang. Drove many an LS and currently drive a LT1 camaro. Here’s the real story: the LS is better in every way you can judge it against the coyote except for 3 things. 1. Volumetric efficiency aka HP/L. This is a nonsense argument. It truly does not matter. I repeat, this is not a valid argument. Want proof? The rotary engine from a 90’s era RX7 is better than both the LS and coyote if you measure performance by this metric. Stop it. 2. Higher revs: this, once again.....does not matter. What does matter, in terms of rpm capability, is ‘how much power under the curve.’ The LS makes more power under more torque curve aka a longer portion of the rpm band, than the coyote. It’s been proven. Sit down. 3. Handles boost like a gem: this is a valid argument and I commend the coyote here. Conclusions: the LS is better because it’s cheap, cheap to build up, compact, lightweight and makes gobs of torque thanks to more cubic inches. More cubic inches is better, not worse.

Even you said it in the video. Only thing stock about that LS was the bottom end. He has cam, upgraded heads, Probly ported, valve springs etc. what you did with a 100% from factory engine is far more impressive.

Disagree entirely. The 5.3 is FAR more impressive. You're comparing a Mustang engine that's designed to rev to 7500rpm out the gate vs an engine that likely came out of a Tahoe that was designed to rev to 5800. From what I saw in The Capizi video his engine is runnin to about 7500rpm. So in effect all he did was balance out the playing field. There are LS engines out there revvin over 11,000 rpm 🤷🏼♂️ Stock bottom end is what is impressive. The Chevy internals are cast components, not forged like the Fords yet the Chevy is still makin enough power to run mid 4s in the 8th. Not only that but the 5.3 is ~ 10:1 Compression with 325ci to the Gen 3 Coyotes 12:0 and 307ci The 5.3 is also physically smaller, lighter and utilizes 3 less camshafts and 16 less valves. No matter which way ya shake it the LS is the Superior Platform.
@dailydriven27044 жыл бұрын
Jon K Heslekrants I can agree with some of what you said. But stock for stock there’s no comparison that the coyote motor stomps the muf flaps out of any LS. Regardless of how impressive it is, we’re talking about a motor that’s been out and everything imaginable has been done and tested for that platform. The coyote motor has been out for 10 years and there just hasnt been someone that has hit fuck it to dump their time and energy into R&D for the coyote platform. Stock motor coyotes have nearly broken into the 4’s. STOCK. No head work, cams stock manifold, or anything else. There’s room for improvement all around for the coyote. It just takes that one person to go and do it. I’m not saying the coyote will/would be faster. But I think it’s he closer than some people would think at the end of the day.
@jkheslekrants4 жыл бұрын
Been watchin ya from the beginning Sir and I know this kinda banter is what you were after but I I strongly disagree. The Coyote Platform is 100% brilliant but there is not one example that supports it being superior. Everything it's doing now has already been done by the LS. It's now been 23yrs since the debut of the LS Platform and at best these latest Ford engines can be compared as performance equivalents. I Love them both. Owned them both. Raced them both. Dailyed them both. Nothin about the Coyote would grant it the title of being the Superior Platform 🤷🏼♂️. Just is what it is brother. Keep up the excellent content! I have mad respect for you and your bitchin build.

I am one of those guys who can't even diagnose a burned out headlight but I have a question for all you gearheads out there. Do you think FORD could build a Coyote engine with a turbo (or 2) PLUS cylinder deactivation? Seems like that would be an ideal engine for relatively good fuel economy with plenty of power when you need it.

People who think Læssø are cheaper are stuck in 2010 through 2013 that is not the case pick up the phone or open google and compare the price between a real LS like an LS three or an LS two to the price of a coyote GEN two origin three in my experience from working at a dealership and having to call around and get quotes all the time eight GEN three coyote is a lot cheaper than an LS three it revs higher. It sounds way better because it’s dual overhead cam and he could handle 1000 hp without having to touch anything inside of the motor you can’t do that with any LS , my buddy who is a diehard Chevy guy just picked up a GEN two coyote and is planning on boosting it

The truth is coyotes break a lot more than LS engines. Coyotes are expensive and complicated. Nobody can’t arque this with me since I’ve had both. Right now running a fox body with a 350 based “Ford” Dart block. Love both bands but you can’t deny reality.
@GrandPitoVic2 жыл бұрын
Brother I have a 03' crown vic and would love to put a Gen 2 5.0L and a 6R80 in her. But like you said they are expensive. Ls's are cheap and the parts to swap them are cheap. I was looking at the Gen 2 and. T-56 6 speed and the swap kit with a new T-56 is 8 grand not including the engine. Between 3 and 5 grand for a pullout is expensive. You can get a high milage truck engine for 2800 and up. I can pull a LS at my U-Pull it for $350 and $50 for the harness and $50 for the computer and $189 for the trans. So for about $600 bucks for the main stuff and then all the nick names it can prob be done for $1000 to $2000 with driveshaft so 5.0s are definitely harder to justify. Thanx for the info.

It's not hard to make 600hp N/A with the stock heads with either platform. Then on avg every time you add 15lbs of boost you double the hp. It's easy to see why it's not hard to make 1200hp+. Making hp is easy today. Getting a car down the track isn't. Although much easy than when I first went low 7s on a small tire in the early 2000s. Been at least 7s with nitrous, Procharger and obviously turbo. Something the ls guys can't deny is MMR going 5.80s with the factory modified block, crank, heads. Ls needed a aftermarket heads and a billet block to even try to run that number. All that said and like I said before. It's always going to come down to the people involved in the build and the person driving it. Not the manufacturer. We should enjoy what everyone has to offer but we will always have fan boys as long as there's different manufacturers.

The reason you don't find coyote engines in the junkyard is because they are still running the reason you see ls engines in the junkyard is because the owner got tired of rebuilding the piece of crap constantly and junked it and junkyard engines are a bad idea because if it sat in the junkyard long enough the block is paper thin and you would end up blowing a hole in the block ls engines are just too cheap to be any good and you'll spend more rebuilding an ls every week for one year than it costs to by a gen x coyote the 302 x costs 33,000 dollars you'll spend 1 million dollars just rebuilding the ls every week in one year that makes the coyote the bang for your buck and it pays for itself because its very durable because of the extremely premium parts its time people give the coyote a very good look because its one incredible engines with extreme performance its way better than the ls by a long shot

I like the Coyote & the LS platforms... Issue with the Coyote is it's so much larger with the dual overhead cams. You have to modify so much to get it to fit into anything. ( which cost's lots of $$$ ) LS... Well as we all know... It goes into pretty much anything with little to no modifications. So far, IMO, you can add more power to a stock LS than you can the stock Coyote Also my Fox Body weighed in at 3200+ with me in it with no traction control ( so probably 200 lbs less that yours )

The reason the ls is dominant is simple, it’s more attainable, it’s smaller in size, it’s more reliable, it makes more power, cost comparison to a coyote isn’t even a conversation, and if out the cane turbo on a coyote and the right ls engine, the ls will out power and torque the coyote every time, I know this because I’ve done it. And finally, most coyotes will not hold up in stock form for very long under extreme power applications. I think a properly built sbf would be a better option than a coyote if you had to keep it ford powered.

It certainly is the case that in power per displacement the Coyote engines are superior to LS. And overall I think they are fantastic engines. But most people don't care about specific power with regards to displacement. The LS platform will give you the same power (and more if built up) for less money, in a smaller package, and also generally lighter as well. It's hard to argue against a 400-450hp V8 for a basic swap that can fit into just about anything that you paid maybe $6-7k for a brand new engine (I won't even begin talking about the $300 junkyard stuff that just doesn't really exist with the Coyote). I don't see Coyotes anywhere near that capability. Yeah you won't rev to the moon (though it is possible with LS, just not stock), and yeah you won't make 450hp with a 5 liter engine. But who cares when the 450hp LS costs ~$3k less and is lighter AND smaller overall. Just my two cents. Not at all dogging the Coyote crowd.
