I thought they were a great idea, until I had to use one on a cold unplanned night on the side of a mountain. They trap moisture and you become damp very quickly which makes you much colder than you would be if it was just used as a blanket. I ended up cutting one side open so it could vent the moisture.

Use a GI Poncho! Sit down on your empty pack for insulation with your back resting against a log or a tree, pull your legs in under the poncho in a sitting Fetal position which will retain body heat much more effectively than lying down on the ground in a big, condensation producing plastic bag, "if you sweat you die" does have an element of truth to it !

This is excellent advice. This alone would make a good video.

I've carried some mylar "space blankets" in my vehicle for years now, having put them there for trips out of town during the wnter months. Might have to look into the Life Bivy. Even though I don't travel as much these days, the ice storm in the winter of '09, with no heat or power for 7 days made me take note of having "stuff" on hand. Hey, and if you do expire, for whatever reason, while in one of those things, you've pretty much already "bagged" yourself for the coroner when they come to get you. 🤪

That's funny Chief, bag & tag yourself.

Better than just a space blanket

They might be nice if you are stuck at some open windy area with average temp, dont wrap it tight. In really cold temperatures it will trap moisture and within five minutes wet and crazy cold....ill pass, get army itchy blanket or good sleeping bag in survival kit
