@@LORD-kg4sl What do you mean by "talk right"? Are you referring to her NYC, Dominican, and Spanish accent? Or perhaps the fact that she speaks AAVE(African American Vernacular English)? Which, for the record, is recognized as an official dialect by professional linguists, and is spoken by the overwhelming majority of people in poorer urban areas. It is mostly spoken by people of color, hence the name, but is spoken by white people in the areas as well as it's much more linked to class than race. For this reason, it's spoken by most rappers. Do you think all of them "talk wrong"? It's hardly not "talking right" when it's an actual dialect, and even considered to be an actual language by some linguists; a real example of talking incorrectly would be your comment, where you A) don't capitalize your first word, B) follow up the word "bitch" and "hoes" with the word "that," when it's meant to be "who" because you are referring to people, not objects, C) you miss an apostrophe in "can't" D) you say "talk right," which is poor grammar, E) you're missing a period. I never call people out on poor English and/or grammar because it's a terrible, rude thing that only assholes do and it's just unnecessary. I'm doing it now, however, to highlight your bias and hypocrisy. Also, how do you know her target demographic? I doubt it's been studied who has been consuming her music, let alone if they have high or low intelligence - presumably based on antiquated testing that more and more people, many of whom are in the field of education and are intelligent by these and other standards, are agreeing is incredibly biased and inaccurate. Mike is a snob, but he's not a biased asshole. I don't think he'd appreciate you being misogynistic, racist, and classist when you could be making legitimate criticisms instead.

If the Grammys don’t want to air rock and metal awards and artists, okay fine. But what is really inexcusable is when they commemorate the dead musicians from that year and completely neglect metal and rock icons, like Vinnie Paul and the Rev.

+ Devin Vering, This is why I stick to the Kerrang Awards, and other Metal and Rock related Awards. Because the Grammy's completely ignore that Rock Music and all it's Sub-Genres don't exist. An I know this to be true, as they used to have category's that were exclusive to Rock music, such as "Best Rock Album", "Best Rock Song". P.S. As much as I hate the Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame (based on the order in which certain Artist's have gone in e.g. Green Day are in and Iron Maiden aren't, What?). At least they recognise all Genre's, I'm aware it's called "Rock N' Roll" but who's Rock N' Roll these days anyway, but as the Grammy Awards, it's more of a Political thing now, an another way of making money (all those sponsors).

I scrolled a bit through the comments, and one thing I didn't find was anyone talking about K-Pop. One of the points Mike made was about his "Michael Jackson" thing. I believe it is true to an extent. As much as I despise most of that genre, almost every single mainstream artist is a boy band. Yes, K-Pop has life and attention just because they have a bunch of pretty boys with make-up that were, in a sense, trained to be used by private media companies and to basically be an introverted teenager's wet dream, but from what I have seen, the main artists there are good at making a choreography, but lyrics are aimed at, again, introverted teenage girls. There are few of these artists that I truly believe would never use a "ghost writer", and even then, the lyrics I talk about are absolute garbage. But, they're still a boy band most of the time. I'm not trying to disprove Mike, I believe in his little theory, I just believe that it is true to an extent. Other than what I've already said, K-pop is still filled with obnoxious, unoriginal and truly boring things, and I don't say this as a metalhead, I say this as a musician. But, I'll repeat myself, just because it's the norm doesn't mean there aren't exceptions. I've done my research, some of these guys are actually talented, some using things like reggae beats and other genres to fuel their music. But who knows, maybe they aren't even the ones who wrote them.

Interesting thoughts on why hip hop replaced rock in pop music! I did some analysis of the Billboard Hot 100, and since 2010 there have only been 13 songs (out of ~580 songs) that I categorize as "rock songs" that made the top 10. The other ~567 songs were basically rap, hip hop, R&B or pure pop. (My loose and liberal definition of a "rock song" here is basically a driving electric guitar and drums in most of the song and/or an electric guitar solo. Rap-rock doesn't count, but there were only a couple of those, "Berzerk" by Eminem in 2013 and "Take What You Want From Me" by Post Malone & Ozzy Osbourne last year. Imagine Dragons and Twenty One Pilots might be rock, but their top 10 Hot 100 hits weren't rock.) I may have missed a handful of songs, and this is subjective anyway. jonas brothers - sucker (2019) dnce - cake by the ocean (2016) elle king - exs and ohs (2015) walk the moon - shut up and dance (2015) paramore - ain't it fun (2014) pink - try (2013) bruno mars - locked out of heaven (2012) neon trees - everybody talks (2012) taylor swift - red (2012) taylor swift - if this was a movie (2011) foster the people - pumped up kicks (2011) adam lambert - whataya want from me (2010) taylor swift - mine (2010)

I’ve been pursuing my career since I was 14. Majored in music, and political arts and science in my mid 20s. I write my own music, have learned to play instruments, but singing, writing, and arranging is my focus... But because I won’t be controlled, or put into a box because I love all music, and can do it all, basically I’ve been training in the arts since brith... Am also a pretty good 👩🎨 as well... And I agree with you. I’m in my mid 30s now, and I don’t quite fit the industry’s standards, so it’s disheartening because it’s in my DNA 🧬 music, and in my bloodline. And to see someone who has out right said they don’t care about music it breaks my heart... I’ve tried everything to pursue my dreams, and have been rejected so many times in my pursuit that I’m jaded now, but it’s my passion, I live to create, and sing! I’m not going to stop because if I did I would have no purpose... Even though I’m struggling, and barely staying afloat I will not give up putting the magic back into music. SN : I love your content.

...I rarely watch the Grammys. The following artists never got a Grammy while they were still performers....... Elvis Presley, Run DMC, Kiss, Queen, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. Madonna didn't get a Grammy until 13 years after putting hit after hit. Currently active artists that have never won a Grammy include Katy Perry, Sia, and Morrissey. Diana Ross never won either. In 2012 over 50 years after she started they decided to give her a lifetime achievement award. Now here are the suckiest worst artists that have won a Grammy........ Milli Vanilli a group that had to give back their Grammy for not even singing their songs and Fergie. Just look her up singing the national anthem. Enough said.

Porter Robinson (AKA Virtual Self) was nominated for Ghost Voices. Aight, the song by itself isn't that bad, it's actually more than good on its genre. But fucking Angel Voices, a masterpiece creatively speaking, won nothing and nobody talked shit about it. Also, what did he won for his album Worlds, one of the best in electronic music history? Granted, he went all the way up on Billboard, but no one talked about him. Porter is a genius, he has so much potential and creativity and keeps bringing fresh sounds to the EDM world, but people are sooo focused on generic-ass artists like Zedd, Dimitri & Like, Guetta, Alesso... Oh and fuck pop/mainstream trap music. Fuck those. And reggaeton too. They're everywhere. I'm tired of hearing the same over and over again. Fucking brain dead idiots supporting that music. What was this about again...? Oh, Grammys. Right. Yeah, don't care about those. Just like the Oscars, it's just a show with pretty people and the music we all expect to hear. Nothing special, whatsoever.

Sigh, where do I begin (a RANT) . . . When I attended the 1st Metal exhibit at the Grammy Museum (folks, you'd be surprised who was represented, and their interactive kiosks in the overall museum actually has a Metal section with almost ALL subgenres), albeit small, about 5 years ago, was very cool and the staff who created it were all Metalheads. When I went outside around the Staple Center in downtown LA (also met dUg Pinnick of Kings X, Rob Flynn of Vio-lence/Machinehead, Brian Slagel founder of Metal Blade and said hello to Steve Vai as they were heading to the "Golden Gods of Metal Awards"), I sat to get a bite to eat, and I was talking to an older gentleman who happened to be a member of the Grammy's, who was a Jazz and Classical composer. He had said that the main reason many genres don't get represented were because of "Time constraints"; "Do you recall that the Grammy's used to be more than 3 hours long?" - my 1st thought was, I didn't care how long, but when I was younger, I naively waited to see "someone" represent Rock, and later, Metal and Progressive music that I actually cared for (I taped the Metallica/Tull fiasco on VHS as it happened - and I'm a Jethro Tull fan as well ;). But that statement basically answered many questions, and as you have pointed out Mike, all that matters is "What is POPULAR". The 2 curators of the Metal Exhibit were 2 women in their late 20's/early 30's that were Metalheads, and told me that the staff of "volunteers" were all metalheads as well. So I asked them the question everyone wants to ask; "What the fuck is up with the Metal category; 'Best Metal Performance'? Why not 'Best Metal Album', what, these people think that Metal is about Hit Singles, its about crafting ALBUMS?" - They laughed and agreed, they said its a HUGE frustration for them in many ways, but they also brought up that its the Metal Industry themselves that are also to blame. They (from photographers, engineers, artists/illustrators, producers, crew and the bands/musicians themselves. Whoever is a grammy member) don't want Metal to be homogenized, sanitized, watered down or become popular where everyone will make it stale and boring. I think they may have thought _way beyond_ what I (and everyone else) wanted; bands from the past and the new to get recognition from their peers. And most importantly (in my head), they would get more recognition in the industry, that it would cause those in the industry to clean up their act, and these bands would get exposure to more people - in turn, more albums sales, more concert tix sold, and they could make a living doing what they love. But year after year of disappointment, I had enough and gave up on the organization. But the truth is, the industry is almost destroyed, but Metal survives because of 1 factor the most . . . . US. Their "peers" were not the mainstream grammy members, but other musicians, producers, engineers (etc.) and WE the fans. Metal and Progressive Rock (and all the subgenres) thrive because of its International fanbase, the most loyal group of people to _each_ band that is out there; Classic, Obscure or new and exploding. The struggles still continue, but the stronger survive and persevere. Jazz and Blues has been on a decline (unfortunately) for the past few years, and less heard by the community that invented it. But as Mike says; Rap/Hip-hop is the dominant music heard everywhere. Its in commercials, its in stadiums, in movies/backgrounds, TV shows, where you eat, where you shop . . . its overkill, and I can not sit through it as it ruins my meal :p (if it augments other musics, it can be cool, but I never could get into the music on its own, no matter underground or pop). Its no surprise that people have championed mediocrity, took music for granted, and the acceptance of formula and the familiar has killed the radio. Even many Country performers, for the past 20-30 years sound like Pop muzak with a southern accent (as my late-father used to say). Watch these 2 documentaries why "popularity" is championed: 1. www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/cool/view/ 2. www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/generation-like/ I came to the conclusion that the best bands of Metal and Prog will stand on their own, the genres will always thrive and never die. Where 50 people say; "Metal has become boring", me and millions of others will always find something unusual because we LOOK for it. Metal will always be obnoxious and piss people off, even other Metalheads because it needs to "evolve". Progressive Rock/Metal will always be virtuosic, bombastic and break rules to keep it all interesting, and BOTH will "weed out the weak" as both are an _exclusive_ music . . . that EVERYONE can join in and enjoy, its "our" niche, its different than all other musics that are more known and accepted, it doesn't follow an industry standard. But our music has longevity, we don't listen to older bands and albums as nostalgia, WE listen to them because its well crafted music that stands the test of time. Note: the last bastion of "musicianship" was the category; "Best Rock Instrumental", but the Grammy's put an end to it in 2012 - See the winners and "nominee's" especially: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy_Award_for_Best_Rock_Instrumental_Performance So everyone can listen to their "flavor of the weak" while washing the dishes, or as background muzak to keep the pulses in their brain active, the rest of us can listen to music and lyrics with depth, music that challenges our heartbeats and brains to think on another level, to be surprised, and stop what we are doing to intensely listen to a part of a song (or its entirety) that is filling our soul with brilliance, being astounded, or wanting to make us air guitar/drum or bang our collective heads . . . and we can see them do it LIVE and actually playing real instruments with all they have learned and crafted. No matter if they are the most obscure or known bands, they push their stamina/will and craft to the maximum. "1" band in the ridiculous "Best Metal Performance" category is not going to represent each Metal fan, because there are TONS upon tons of bands out there from every shore and continent, and most of us can list 50 or more bands a year that hit us like a ton of bricks . . . not just 1 band that a grammy member randomly picked, because their son's girlfriends cousin who has listened to Metal for 2 years liked said band (and even if its a band we actually enjoy!). That's my rant and I'm sticking to it \m/. Loved your vid Mike! kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKfYp2NpapyCbqs Porcupine Tree said it with much less words . . . "Hear the sound of music Drifting in the aisles Elevator Prozac Stretching on for miles The music of the future Will not entertain It's only meant to repress And neutralize your brain Soul gets squeezed out Edges get blunt Demographic Gives what you want One of the wonders of the world is going down It's going down I know It's one of the blunders of the world that no-one cares No-one cares enough Now the sound of music Comes in silver pills Engineered to suit you Building cheaper thrills The music of rebellion Makes you want to rage But it's made by millionaires Who are nearly twice your age One of the wonders of the world is going down It's going down I know It's one of the blunders of the world that no-one cares No-one cares enough" - The Sound of Muzak .
