I did a lot of gripping on season 2 of Handmaid's Tale and it was a great experience. One of my favourite shows I've worked on because of the extensive lighting.

That scene inDC, where they pull out and the angel wings from the statue “fit” her. Genius

The Handmaid's Tale scenes hooked me right away. I liked the look of it . Also it is really noticeable that they thought a lot about some of the scenes. It is pleasing to watch those scenes. It is a nice show which is pleasing eyes and makes the audience think. I like the dose of the drama on it and those face shots are sick! Man i like that show...

I remember a few rigging days on season 2 on this show. rigging skypanels over every window. And i remember Colin and the Gaffer would come in once in a while and test various punchy tungsten sources through windows. Neat episode!

Great convo! I would have loved to hear more about his collaboration with Reed. She's an excellent cinematographer in her own right and Colin's collaboration with her and the other directors would have been super insightful.

Colin said that it was very a pleasant collaboration with Reed since she knows exactly what she wants in color and shot selection, given her mastery of cinematography as well!

Always wondered why when the characters went to Toronto, that the look didn't reflect that change - Canada being the more normal and escape route for the characters, why not grade it to be more normal looking? And then the viewer would then feel it, as they cut from Canada back to the hell that was before. Same with the flashbacks - before all this happened.

Such a great question. So much deliberating about this. When Fred and Serena go to Toronto on a diplomatic trip, we decided, because the story being told in those scenes was from Serena's perspective, that we stay with the Gilead grade and composition style. Serena didn't drop her guard and we wanted to express that. The next time Serena was back in Toronto was episode 5 season 3, when she meets Luke with the baby and dresses in Canadian clothes, thus dropping her guard. This time I felt it was right to go to the 'real' world grade (okay almost) with handheld photography.. Also, maybe you feel the grades between the real world and Gilead are not far apart enough ever, also another discussion.
