This comparison between Final Fantasy and "Soulsborne games" not only does not make any sense because you're comparing a series of Anthological games to a very niche specific style of gameplay. Which also HAPPENED because a lot of people Were craving for another Hidetaka Myiazaki game when Armored Core Fires of Rubikon was announced and the 6 people who still cared for the AC franchise had to shout to everyone that Armored Core WAS NOT a Souls game and keep people's expectations in check.

The extreme genre shift on top of the general frustration from a lot of RPG players since a lot of series all shifted to action so a lot of us were tired in general. They really should have done what Atlus does with SMT/Persona/etc, keep the FF games consistent and make the action games a spin off series, they made Stranger of Paradise, that could have been the name for action FF.

Well... from my personal perspective, FF's "genre" has always been "epic, heartfelt story with fantastic music." The gameplay being traditional JRPG, or even traditional FF, is a bit less important to me compared to the overall spirit of the story. Even the "spirit" of like Dragon Age or the Chrono series, Star Ocean, etc., despite being JRPGs, they never felt even remotely FF to me. Maybe it's how FF presents characters and how they are always integral to the story. Yeah it wasn't a perfect game, it's easy to nitpick anything in this day and age. Now that I'm old as crap, I notice that the last fifteen years people tend to say "I hate it" or "I love it!" and there's next to no in between. I think that's more of a problem than the games themselves. Great vid as always my friend!

The issues are simple, the game is linear, the story is uninspired and there is no role playing in the statistical sense or story wise. Its on rails no matter how good the action combat is, that isn't what most FF fans are there for, here's a simple example you don't go to KFC for pizza.
@bluelagoon42 ай бұрын
For sm1 who has played some of the older and newer games of the franchise, I can say I enjoyed the game. Not my favourite FF, but still. Totally agree on the combat system, it lacks variety and complexity. Regarding side-quests, like most RPGs, most of them are boring (and ngl, I'm a "dialogue skipper") still did all of them because I'm a completionist and didn't want to miss any important unlock or reward. In terms of map-building, the most rewarding thing is discovering breathtaking sceneries... other than that, nothing else. Crafting... didn't bother much (many FFs don't even have that, it's mostly about loot hunting and purchasing gear from merchants, no crafting). Despite all these, I really loved the Eikon combats, the story, the music, the chara and environment design, the dlcs, and ofc the characters and their acting... except Jill who's a bit bland (an accessory more than anything) and her relationship with Clive didn't feel as deep as his relationship with his brother... Hell! Even the dragoons couple, with a ridiculously short screentime, was deeper and more meaningful than theirs! Anyway, great video!

I didn't hate the game, but it was definitely disappointing. For the record, I love action games and generally don't like turn based games, so if anything, this is the FF for me, but it still fell flat for me. There's a number of reasons.... 1. The combat was fine, but really hampered by performance. Playing on PS5 with 20 fps while particle effects are flying left and right makes for a not fun combat experience. 2. The set piece eikon fights were REALLY cool and epic to watch, but pretty boring to play. They are too scripted and simplistic gameplay wise so you're really just going through the motions on your controller rather than it being a high stakes edge of your seat battle. Looks epic, plays boring. 3. The loot is boring. It's a linear upgrade with the next sword being a little bigger than your current sword. On top of that, you don't even get to arm your companions because there are basically no companions in the game. 4. I'm going to get hate for this one, but I feel the story is just okay but the characters are really one dimensional and boring. Maybe my expectations are too high, but the characters in FF16 really didn't do it for me, especially compared to older games like FF10 and FF7.
@FailroadExpress2 ай бұрын

I hate FF16. Why? Because easy games bore me. FF16 was pathetically easy, it literally rewards you for dying and will not allow you to play hard difficulty until you bore yourself to death in normal mode for the entire game. Yeah not doing that. I just quit. And frankly I'm getting really tired of square enix trying to reinvent the series. They make all these successful turn based rpg's still to this day, yet for some reason they refuse to make FF turn based again. They always have to try and reinvent the series and every single time it turns out mid and nobody really cares about it anymore than they care about assassins creed 25. Just stop. The moment square enix decides to return to final fantasy's roots is the moment people start actually caring about the series like they used to.

I like FFs that reward you for exploration or committing time to tasks, especially finding hidden areas or stumbling upon something rare. Story ofc is paramount, but I also like it when they have moments of silliness. Coloful vibrant environments and music that elevates it all. My favorites overall are 6,7,9,10,and upon reflection 13. Few reasons, some objective, some subjective : - Combat system : combat loop is tedious and repetitive. ONE COMBO is criminal. Not enough basic attacks - having something closer to Stellar Blade would have been perfect. 30-ish Eikonic Abilities, and you can use only 6. Criminal. You choose the most effective and you stick with them. No elemental affinities/weaknesses. Egregious with such an emphasis on elements. After Rebirth’s variety, FF16 combat is terribly bland in terms of combat skills. Shame cuz gameplay is super sleek and pleasant…but hitting like a wet towel and having damage sponges fights is crap. Magic system sucks, so much could have been done, same issue as FFXV. Story : excellent premise, lackluster delivery - not the writing, but the depth of characters development. Too many side characters are given too much importance. Jill/Clive relationship too shallow. Other Antagonists are also too shallow. Cid dies too fast - compare with FF7 remake/rebirth. Their relationships are so great, genuine, lots of team building. Best relationship was Clive/Cid and it’s way too short, what a shame, so much potential cuz setting is great. Cid is such a chad, a shame really. World : Pointless exploration, mechanical world, no incentive to explore at all, agree with you. Every zone is there CUZ THERE IS A QUEST ugh how shit is that. Zero dungeons outside of main story. Zero « optional » content that you can do just to do it. Again, a great world that screams to be discovered…
@souitenesse6742 ай бұрын
Overall I agree with all your points. I just feel that FF7 Rebirth is by far the best FF we got since FFX and XVI had such potential and it did not need much to make the experience really unforgettable. FFXVI did things I never saw before. I am replaying it now and the opening hours, until you find Jill again, are SO strong. And then…for a game so long, so many things felt rushed (story/characters wise) and unnecessary. Dunno. Felt FFVII Rebirth spoiled me so much by giving me everything I really wanted in terms of characters interaction/relationship building.

Things like giving us the ability to equip party members to increase their stats, havings elemental weapons be standalone instead of linear upgrades, with unique elemental effects. Having rare items found in chests, instead of having all the rare items located in the shop. All these little design choices that would add depth and make the game far less linear.

Started last week, got to post-bahamut before my computer broke down. It's an interesting movie and beautiful piece of art that I intend to finish, but it's an awful game. I want to like the combat system, as it looks and feels super cool, but it's completely undermined by the training wheels the game has. There is absolutely zero reason to learn to play the game when you are rewarded so robustly for intentionally dying. Between that and the freaking joke cheat rings the game forces on you EVEN IF YOU CHOOSE ACTION MODE, the game is nothing but button mashing between cutscenes (even without the rings). If they had a difficulty OPTION that allows you to actually lose and pushes you to learn the combat system, then I would absolutely love the game, despite a number of other gripes I have with it. That one single issue turns my evaluation of this g̶a̶m̶e̶ film from "pretty good" to "abysmally terrible", because without gameplay, it's not even a game. It's like someone made a gourmet meal for you, then took a steaming crap on it right before it was served. Sure there's something wonderful at almost every layer, but whether you choose to pick the **** off, or eat it with a smile, it doesn't change the fact that you got served a plate of turds.

You pretty much summed up all of the hate on FF16, which was pretty much everything in it except for the boss fights and that's why a lot of people don't like the game. Anybody who says that people only dislike the game because it's not turn based, y'all need to get out of your echo chamber for 5 minutes and actually listen to what the hell people are saying. By the way, not only were the side quests repetitive but even main story quests were repetitive too. All you really do for main story stuff is go stop an antagonist/destroy a crystal, come back to base, talk with NPCs, and repeat. The pacing was very off too. The 13 year time skip was understandable, but the 5 year time skip is where it and the story falls off so hard. Stupidly, none of the other characters appearances or personalities change after that either, except for Clive's of course. We also never learn why Joshua stays away from Clive for all of that time. It's supposedly because of him locking Ultima inside of him he had to keep him away from Clive, but if that's truly the case then why does he out of nowhere decide to join Clive and the rest of the hideaway when he coincidentally meets him again when he heads out to stop Bahamut? Make it make sense. It's also ridiculous how not only is the gameplay repetitive, but the characters in your party can't be incapacitated in battle. It really never crossed the mind of the stupid idiot goddamn gameplay creator for FF16 that this is a Final Fantasy game and that regardless of whether the characters are playable in the gameplay or not, they should not be immortal. FF15 had unplayable party members when it first came out and even they had HP bars. It's news to me that characters in your party can have eternal life in Final Fantasy gameplay. Whoever designed the gameplay for FF16, you deserve to be fired for that reason alone. I don't give a shit. Geez, I lose my mind sometimes talking about this game because of how nonsensical and terrible it is. But anyway, you also missed one very important flaw that the game has that everybody is in agreement on, even people who actually like the game. Here's what it is: They don't even go into any of the other characters' backstories or why they are the way they are. It's true that they definitely all had potential but it felt like the developers either just didn't know what to do with any of them or they were just being lazy with them, but I have no doubt at all that it's the latter because if you can write a whole entire game revolving around one single character (Clive), then you can give any other character a spotlight. They only tell us tiny little snippets of some of the other characters' stories and that's it, they never actually show it to us or give any of them a chance to shine. Final Fantasy is very known for giving most of the main characters a spotlight and revealing why they're the character they turned out to be in the present time, but unfortunately FF16 was focused way too much on Clive and all of the characters in the game only exist as tools for him and not even as their own character. Why do they think everyone is constantly asking for more DLCs on the game for all of the other Dominants? Hell, even the voice actors are indirectly telling them in interviews that they need to flesh the other characters out because evidently even they know that the characters were wasted. Literally all of the characters except for Clive were straight up disrespected. The ending of the game wasn't great either because it destroyed half of Clive's character arc. Part of Clive's arc is about living and learning to love himself. There's multiple characters in the game especially Joshua, Jill, and even Cid scolding him to stop thinking about everybody else to save himself for once. What the hell was the point in all of that if he was just going to die in the end? All it did was destroy part of his arc and even make the characters' efforts for him in vain. It didn't really stop my like for him though. There may be flaws with Clive's arc but he's still pretty cool as a character overall and he actually became one of my favorite protagonists in the series. I'm just pissed off that they put him and some of the other characters who had so much potential in such a trashy ass game. You can't make this shit up. FF16 was such lazy design and I hope Yoshi P and his team never work on another mainline Final Fantasy game ever again. They need to just stick with their never ending MMO game. If FF16 had been a spin off or something, then I probably would've appreciated it a bit more. It's just a wannabe baby version of Devil May Cry and they literally took away everything that makes Final Fantasy within this game. The only good things about FF16 were the story kind of and the boss fights. That's all. I can see why though. You can tell that all of their money for this game was stupidly spent on the boss fights. I mean, look at how long and intense they were. This might sound cruel, but I'm glad that this wannabe Devil May Cry game flopped. Square Enix said several times that the game didn't meet their expectations. So to them, it definitely flopped. Maybe that'll teach them a lesson to stop abandoning the fans who appreciate the Final Fantasy franchise for its identity that it had and stop trying to transform it into something that's not even recognizable anymore.
