My father's father immigrated from Calabria, Italy at the thurn of the 19th/20th century and settled in the Bronx. For the mafia, he was the guy you had to give the password to in order to enter the Speakeasy. What upset my father about the movie was the language. A screenplay about his life was circulating for many years but got nixed. Al Ruddy slammed the door shut on him in “The Offer”. The way he was portrayed was deliberate. I’ve worked with him three times and I have to admit he have me going until he got careless and told the same story he told me to others but changed too many circumstances. That’s when I realized this was just a gifted storyteller who had lived an incredibly lucky life. He’s a master at improvisation. His vodka and his wines are outstanding. But take his stories and cut them into about 1/3.
