I grew up with Jeeps. CJs and a YJ. The YJ was like “the drivable CJ” IMO. It was better at longer drives, wasn’t as tippy, but it still felt like a CJ. I still have my ‘88 4.2 IL6 and love it. It’s been lifted with new bumpers, new wheels, and rides on 33’s. Also just had it rhino lined- looks killer. replaced the crappy carb with a Weber 38/38 and oh baby...I had a lion under the hood ...until I fried the engine. 🤣 So I just had the engine rebuilt and I’m going with an injector kit on the next round, as well as the AR15 tranny, new clutch, and new transfer case. YJs are great Jeeps. Welcome to the tribe!

I drove my 95 rio grande for 17 years without ever having a tune up. When It started running a little rough I took it to my mechanic. He actually saved the plugs and wires to show them to me. The plugs were fused to the heads and the wires were cracked and burnt. He said that there is no reason in the world why this thing even started let alone drove anywhere. Had to trade it because it rotted beyond repair. I'm looking for a replacement because nothing else comes close. after 17 years you actually form an emotional connection to them. The one thing that never let me down, "20 of snow, "8+ inches of water anywhere, anytime. As you can tell I really miss it!

4.2 isn't really stronger, but if you live in a state without inspection requirements, you can swap out the carburetor and run the thing on next to no electronics. Mine is an 88 4.2 and stripped it of all the unnecessary electrical stuff. I'm rewiring the whole thing and building a custom dash.

Mine is a 1990 YJ 4 cylinder which I bought new as the cheapest, fun commute vehicle that I could afford at the time. Even though it is still mostly stock (did I hear gasps of "Heresy!") it's been a lot of fun over the years. Done a few off road / back road adventures. Aside from hoses, belts, etc the engine and drive train are all original, and work fine. I was nervous about the Peugeot 5 speed transmission but it's been OK too, as has been the throttle-body fuel injection. Two things have broken - the tailgate latch doesn't close properly, and the fuel gauge is wildly wrong (I use the odometer to guess when I should fill up). So, yeah, although not a classic, it's fun vehicle. Except on an Interstate where you feel like you're in a golf cart amongst the big rigs.
@rbsafe Жыл бұрын
In good conscience I need to add that, while great fun, a YJ in a crash is maybe the last vehicle I'd want to be in. A rollover? Maybe OK if seat belts are on and working right; did that once in a Volvo and walked away. But a driver-side T-bone in YJ? Ugh, don't want to think about it.

I’ve got a 4 banger Jeep tj (2.5 not the 2.4l in the later years). It is the same as a 4.0, just with two cylinders chopped off. Equally as reliable. Still an absolute pig on gas though. As long as you have the right gear/tire size ratio, it’s really not bad at all cruising around town. Highway performance is pretty rough. I have had mine up to 85 MPH and it was absolutely terrifying. Even with the 4.0, they weren’t designed for highway driving. I can cruse at 70 mph all day long. Really YJs have skyrocketed in prices. They used to be a cheaper alternative to the TJ generation which came after it, but from what I have observed that is no longer the case. John Cena also owns a 2.5l YJ… there is a video on KZbin of him showing it off.
@blackpearlmedia7797 Жыл бұрын
Nice to hear that it's just as reliable. I have to agree that they are not really rockstar on the highway but can handle it when needed. Jeep deals are getting harder to find but they are still out there! I got this at the hight of the market in 2021 and the seller came down over 50 percent on the asking. Granted it was in rough shape but still ran and drove

Accept the dana 35 that thing has to go, 8.8s are fairly cheap. Lifted it up on 33s and never could get it stuck (at least where I off road). Now I've swapped it to being a SBC powered 2wd hotrod, and for the 3 weeks that it was driving, it was a blast. Now I'm waiting on a crate motor to replace the one I blew up lmfao
@deathtrapgarage5063 ай бұрын
also, when I owned the 4 banger, it ran good, was reliable, and overall was a good engine. The AX5 transmissions are pretty weak and notorious for grinding gears eventually. Otherwise they're basically 4.0s minus 2 cylinders. Honestly, wouldn't get one again. After I lifted it, it couldn't get above 75mph even with the 4.10 gears. And it sucked gas down too, best I ever got was 11mpg. 5th gear basically becomes useless if you don't go to 4.56s or numerically higher. If I get another jeep I'd get one with the 4.0 or 4.2, but then again, I'd really get any other jeep to accompany mine.

2.5 made as much power as the old 4.2, 4.2 had it beat for torque. The 4.0 was never carbed, you either had the carbed 4.2 pre 91 or the "HO" 4.0 91+ as far as the Wrangler went. the XJs had 4.0s from 86 onward but they were RENIX engines with a Renault fuel injection system. 91 brough the "HO" 4.0s to the whole lineup with the Chryco MPI system.

I own a jeep Wrangler TJ Sahara and with me I always looked at wranglers like this why would you spend so much money on something that is so small I didn't understand till I owned mine but I grew up my brother had a rio grande yj and 2 wrangler sports I even drove my brother friend tj and still didn't understand but now owning jeeps for close to 20 years never had a 4 cylinder always owning a 6 cylinder they are reliable vehicles that are easy to work on the only issue I've ever had with a jeep is electrical but it's the nature of the beast for having something you can use offroad

I have had my 89 Sahara for over twenty years now. Been a SBC for most of that and a daily driver. Its been to Tellico when it was still open back and forth from western NC to Ft. Stewart GA a million times. Dropped the kids off to school there hole lives. Its been with me longer than most people in my life. Its had two sets of Bestop interiors, three sets of shocks, on its third soft top, several sets of tires, a couple of batteries, a paint job in 06 (wich is starting to flake now on the hood). Second fuel sender, and im sure im missing some things. But I wouldn't sale it. It will probably out live me😋. I guess it wil be up to my children one day to either shoot it, scrap it, or bury it with me.

I’ve had my 88 YJ since 1990. Straight 6, 2 barrel carburetor with 62k original miles. I’ll never sell it. You can bury me in it…

When I moved to FL from CA I shipped my 95 YJ I've had since HS. What the hell is the duck thing? Some stupid advertising thing I guess from a dealer. CA it's Tacos and here it chicks in Jeeps plastered with DUCKS! I wave at these people and they just look like a deer in the headlights. Better than a Tesla cutting you off every 5 secs.

@@blackpearlmedia7797 engine block, cylinder head, brakes, drums, transmission, fuse box, radiator, clutch cable, flywheel, alternator, windshield- Still need parking brake, turn signal arm, all dash lights, hazzards lights re-wired, new tires, vinly top replacement, waterproofing... and I'm sure something else will come up before I get around all that.
