For me this podcast is the best thing on KZbin right now 100%. The information is so valuable and so well presented. The hosts are amazing. Both of you guys seem really genuine and likeable and i think your guests really feel that as well, because they all seem so comfortable talking to you two. Thank you for making this :)

I can't believe this has so few views?! When Season 2 + 3 comes out I'm gonna need another video or two like this. It's so fascinating hearing professionals discuss these under-appreciated details and important shots that went into making such a great adaption/show, one that's both extremely faithful but also deviates at the best times.

I initially thought "who would want to watch a TV show when they can just play the games?", and "this is probably going to be the exact same as the game so why watch it, what's even the point?", but after seeing this interview and hearing how they not only thoughtfully made decisions but also made some very creative choices like not showing the violence but showing the cause and effect, changed my mind and now I can't wait to watch The last of US!

I never thought about it quite so clearly until the editor talked about Joel's mindset, using the term avenging angel at the hospital and how it's really either that he'll die or he'll get to Ellie. It's a beautiful parallel to what Ellie will do in the future.

Yes, as someone who played the game, I loved those shot-for-shot from the game. I agree that the dynamic of the fresh eyes and someone invested in the content is partially what added to this being a great adaptation. WOAH! The iconography - I completely missed that. I freaking love these breakdowns. I still stand by my opinion that Joel did the right thing 🤷🏿🤷🏿🤷🏿. Because 1) They didn't tell her what it would really take to create the vaccine and 2) There was no guarantee it would have worked, so it could have all been for nothing. 3) He became a parent again, and did what any parent should - protect their kids at all costs.

It's funny how we expect a video game to be exactly like the movie and we choose to over look the process of changing an imaginary world/digital world to real life, also the feel of the game can never be the same as in the movie.

lovely interview. I personally thought the contrasting tone between love and brutality of video game worked a lot better. Protecting the viewer from the violence made the urgency of protecting Ellie less profound. The world is less scary which in turn also makes Joel is less scary, which waters down the themes of the story to me. It's the relentless and constant attack of the world that makes the quiet wholesome moments so treasured. Still a great show - just a shame to me personally that the "fresh" take on last of us is less urgency and personal attachment.

The walking shots show how impersonal the killing is, and how much like the Angel of Death Joel is here.

I like the change of cutting to Ellie during the Henry scene. Out of the two, it affected Ellie more than Joel. Joel has already experienced similar things before. On the other hand, this is not an editing problem, but I would've liked them to keep what Henry said in the game: "What did you do?" instead of "What did I do?". In both cases he's talking about himself.

7:14 I didn't quite catch onto that in that instance in episode 5, but it did really jump to my eyes in the next episode when they are out practicing with the rifle, and Ellie at one point takes binoculars off of her eyes (as she is saying "you're gonna shoot this thing or you're gonna get it pregnant?") , and as she does she reveals the sun behind her, and the light just takes all of the screen for a second before she obscures it back by crossing over it at the end of the shot. I really loved that shot, and it kinda conveys the same thing.

I don’t like the choice to hide so much of the violence. I understand that sometimes it is not necessary to be shown, (like in the Henry and Sam scene) but part of what I loved about the game was the visceral fear of danger that it instilled in the player through violence, and the show seems to go out of its way to eliminate that.
