Me too, but I simply can't do it. I went straight from Leica R systems with digital back to Leica M9. I was supposed to get the Leica M8.2 but then the Leica M9 came. So I've missed the whole M8 experience. I still see it as a great b&w camera (because it has great monochrom tones) and a infrared camera for those who like to do that. And it's a very economical way into the Leica M system now!

I just watched this video again. This video was one of the main reasons I bought a used M9, Well this and the reams of pages you have written about this camera. I got a really nice condition one with the most updated sensor. I feel like I am back in my film days again. Simple uncomplicated and beautiful files. The slow screen does not bother me at all.. Frankly I could do without as I am not a chimper.(also the battery lasts a lot longer) I have been borrowing Leica lenses from a friend of mine and comparing with a couple of vintage Canon and Voigtlander lenses I have. For me I am getting fine results with all. I had been using Fujifilm as they were as close as possible to old school film cameras. But the Leica is in another realm altogether. I feel like I am Making instead of Taking now..I love the shutter sound but would love it more if it was a little quieter. Thanks for all your advice Mr T

I almost bought a Leica M9 this time last year but, after humming and hahing for a month I bought a Leica X 113 untried which had just come out. Really I just bought it as a city compact and had no great expectations; OMG the astonishing image quality, its now my main camera. Gosh it totally changed the way I photograph things and really I see my upgrade path now being to a Leica Q if they ever bring one out with a 35mm lens. Well not only have i been delighted to use Leica but I have gone back to using film as well so my father's old Leica IIIg and M3 will get a new lease of life. This time last year I would have never guessed that a year on I would have dumped my DSLRs and be using film again, let alone the Fuji GW690 III 6x9 medium format camera which is arriving from Japan at the end of the week, it will provide me with a 40x90mm panoramic negative; the X113 started me cropping panoramas and I have been using that format for street photography a lot this year (the cafe photo on my banner was the first of them last spring, I immediately saw the crop and thought Hopper Night Owls and my photography had changed for ever). Thank you for your videos which played a huge role in me choosing Leica last year. This year is going to be very exciting I think ;-)

Thorsten, we all know your relation to Leica, BUT I did not hear one word (or did I miss it?) about the sensor corrosion problem! When I got one of the very first M9 in 2009 one row of pixels where missing - Leica QC? In 2014 I noticed strange patterns on the pictures, later known as sensor corrosion. I sent the camera to Leica and got a free repair. At that time I started a thread in the Leica forum, asking, who has the same problem, and got about 2.400 answers!! I got fed up and sold the M9. BUT I had the M Monochrom already with the same CCD sensor, bought one of the very first in 2012. If I would have known the construction fault of the sensor at that time, I would not have bought any CCD Leica again. I loved and love the B&W images of the MM, but used the Sony more and more for B&W and also some analog cameras like the Hasselblad. Three weeks ago I used the MM and again noticed some strange spots. Leica customer care wrote, that it needs a new sensor because of the corrosion problem (they did not use this word!). The camera is more that 5 years old and Leica charges the customers about 1.500€ now for their production fault!! This is about half of the price of a used MM with a new sensor! This is the highest drop of value from all my camera gear in over 50 decades! They punish engaged Leica buyers, who buy a new product. You better buy a Leica, that is several years on the market, after the early customers found the problems. Infrared: you mentioned the M8 for infrared. I used the MM for IR with 720nm filters and got great pictures, it works great for IR. good luck with your M9 dierk

So how did it end up going from "impossible" to making a full frame digital Leica to possible? I really still would like an M9 or an M240, hopefully when the M10 is announced they drop more in price, I'm picking up an M6 with a summicron soon so having a digital Leica as well would be nice since I'd presumably be building a small collection of Leica lenses. I think the better ISO performance would make me want the m240 over the M9 but the massive cost difference makes me want to wait until the rumored M10 and see if the cost of the 240 goes down
@AtelierMarsViolet8 жыл бұрын
It was impossible to make a full frame digital Leica using the sensor technology which existed prior to 2009. Film can capture light from any angle, but image sensors need the light to hit the sensor straight-on. The problem was that Leica lenses sit so close to the film/sensor plane that the light exiting the lens hits the sensor at acute angles along its edges, meaning that without some sort of correction, there is extreme vignetting. So Leica had Kodak design a sensor with micro-lenses at its edges to correct the incident angles of light.

Hi Thorsten, thanks so much for your videos, this is a great channel. Your M9 review couldn't have come at a better time, I have just reserved an M9 after waiting a year to get into this particular rangefinder system. I purchased the lens I wanted first, the 50mm Summilux 1.4 as I saw a reasonable deal for it, and have been weighing up whether I should purchase the M240 or the M9. After seeing your video I think I will go with the M9 as an introduction to the Leica system, plus it is a lot of money for me. Unfortunately I missed your photography workshop in last week in London but hope to attend one in future. Yes, the Leica M9i is still worth having, and for many a classic camera that has a lot o soul and slow-down qualities while making high quality result. I still use mine from time to time, but nwer cameras have things you get to get used to, like faster speed. The Leica M-E240 they are introducing this summer is a remake of the M240, but for only $3,995. www.overgaard.dk/Leica-M-Type-240-aka-Leica-M10-digital-rangefinder-camera-page-30.html The Leica T is a different beast, and you may liek it. @@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard Very true. I was looking at other cameras testing most them out. Very nice overview. The M9 screen: small, so less exposure to risk. You did not mention it can also be used to very accurately check focus, quickly. You don't have to wait for the pic to "pop" in to zoom, just tap up and roll the wheel. Pick any spot and you can tell, without doubt, what is in focus, even with the fastest lenses. M9 is fantastic backcountry camera, and ski camera. ISO made me buy fast lenses, LOL What maybe you might have mentioned: the 50 lux and 28 cron prefer M9. Especially the 28. I saw some fall out of love with those lenses using 240--which they prefered to M9. I use M9, A7 kolari, and A7r2. Excellent presentation, thank you.

how does the M10 adjust frame lines for when you're using a 35 vs 50 vs 70, etc? with no selector switch?
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard4 жыл бұрын
It does so automatically. The lens triggers the frame lines with a little metal tab on the bayonet. The frame selector is for you to preview what other frames would be doing (the idea is that you view through he camera viewfinder and then change frames and think, "Oh, better put on a wider 28mm to get what I want". In reality, the frame selector is mostly for nostalgic reasons. But it still works great for those 5% or so who uses it.

You have to pick a fast one because as he says, usable ISO goes as far a s 800 (specially for color). Either you go for any Summilux ranging back to the older versions depending on your budget if you dont care about size, weight o finder blockage o go for a Summicron. I own the last one before the outstanding APO and even it is not stellar in any characteristic, it is a brilliant allrounder. If you are unsure do not buy new. Hello Thorsten how are you? I wanted to ask you a rangefinder question in an email but I think viewers may benefit from the question also. Older vintage lenses have beautiful character as we know, the flares and out of focus areas. when using an slr or mirrorles cam with EVF we can see through the lens all the different things the lens is doing and get it just right before taking the shot. Rangefinders though (which Ive never tried one as yet) you cant see if its flaring over the subjects face, or whether the Dof is too shallow and things like that. my question is isnt a rangefinder limiting in that way for creative artistic shots where youre trying to use the character of the lens to the full? Ive never seen anyone talk about this before. thanks
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard7 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. With an EVF you can see depth of field, flare and all other things. And you can add an EVF to the Leica M240 and M10 which are the two later models of the Leica M. And then you can mount the Leica lenses on Panasonic, Fujifilm, Sony, etc On the M9 and any other rangefinder, part of the creative artistic beauty is that you envision the image and work rather intuitive with it. You are not slowed down with the EVF or anything else; and often that will result in very intuitive and creative results. Of course you would like the guarantee that it will work (hence the EVF), but it actually does work very well without the EVF and with the rangefinder alone. With this photo session, the flare photo is doing a series of slightly moving the camera and calculating (on the fly) the difference between the viewfinder and lens position, as well as what the sunlight might do in the lens. One of them worked well, and that was the final one. The sunlight is not as strong as the image suggest (it comes through the trees before sunset), and there's a reflector blasting a lot of light back on the face as well. www.overgaard.dk/the-story-behind-that-picture-0058_gb.html
@Raychristofer7 жыл бұрын
You know what Thorsten, those 3 BW photos of that model really came out remarkable, especially the flare shot how it didnt obscure her face. many times I see photos on Flickr shot by Leicas and I usually cant see the special character difference but in that set i finally see what a Leica lens image can be, especially since you said these were not heavily edited.You know Ive been holding back from signing up for your mailing list to make sure you earn it lol but I Im gonna finally sign up, the way you explained how the aperature is placed in the lens at the point where the light turns upside down showed to me you know technicalities of photography beyond average. respect bro

Trying to decide between the M8 or the M9? For the M9 I need to find one with a replacement sensor. The M8 is older but I have read the sensor makes fantastic images regardless of less megapixels. Is the M9 worth the extra money over the M8? Im not a professional so don’t need all the bells and whistles.
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard5 жыл бұрын
The game is to find an M9 with a good sensor. It can corrode, even if it has been replaced. The replacement sensor was the similar sensor for a long while, it is only recently they made a new one that didn't corrode at all. So you get an M9, and cross your fingers. In worst case you need the sensor replaced at some point in time. Or maybe never.

I've been looking into buying a Leica M9 to go along with my x-pro2. There is a lot of info on the M9's sensor corrosion. Do you know if all M9 sensors are destined to go bad over time or the ones that have been fine for 5+ years should be alright?
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard6 жыл бұрын
Hard to say if they would all go bad, but I would estimate there's a good change you need to change sensor at some point, unless the camera have already had it's sensor changed. Leica Customer Service can inform on that based on serial number. Then again, I wouldn't worry greatly about it. I had sensors changed in all my cameras, and I never noticed anything. It was during regular servicing they estimated they wanted to change sensors.

Thank you so much Thorsten for this informative review. Now in 2018 I am still struggling to upgrade my M9 to an M10. I would never hesitate to buy new Leica lenses and that's what I have been doing all these years till presently. The major issue is image quality and I am not interested in the latest Leica cameras with CMOS sensors at all. Take a look at trees and green leaves, CMOS lacks the "freshness" and the kind of "emerald glow" that CCD could readily deliver. To me images taken with an M9 looks like the sound of a first press vinyl whilst those taken by an M10 looks like the sound of a high resolution DSD11.2MHz file. If Leica makes one new CCD camera with the latest technology, I would buy one without any hesitation. Introspectively, do Leica aficionados really need high SD card writing speed, high ISO performance, and user-friendliness? My only worry is how long my M9 and its batteries are going to last.
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard5 жыл бұрын
Interesting thought that Leica should make a CCD camera. They would sell well, but it might not be possible to get enough CCD sensors, or any at all. That's one of the problems with cameras today; that the parts are not being made anymore. For example the shutter in the M10 is the same as the big Nikon, but few cameras uses shutters these days, so it becomes a rare part to get made. Making something for just Leica becomes an expensive and complicated task, they have to rely on existing technology being produced. But yes, a CCD classic Leica ... it would be fun :-)

@@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard Thank you Thorsten I had purchased an M10P late last year. As far as image quality is concerned, the highlights are very unnatural in my opinion especially when taking portraits. As a result of this I bought one film MP and one MA afterwards since I had completely given up hope on Leica's CMOS based cameras. I am currently looking for an M9P in good condition. As an aside I just want to let you know that an M9 with an APO50 lens work wonders. Forget about the resolution stuff. This combo paints very nice colours. I don't know why but APO50 provides more realistic colours than APO Summicron 75 and APO Summicron 90. Despite the fact that all have been given the designation of APO, the "APO" of APO50 seems to be better. One more interesting observation: whenever I take portraits with M9+APO50, the tiny reflections in the eyes of individuals always glitter more.

Wonderful video! I've always had Leica ownership on my bucket list and you've inspired me to make it happen so I'm on the hunt for a used M9. Prices don't seem quite as low as what you mentioned in the video though-- decent bodies in the 2700-3000 range and the 35mm f/2.5 around 1200---a good starter kit I think. Reading the content on your website and enjoying you're book. Thanks for all of it!

Skin tones, IIRC Agfa had reddish-orange skin tones and perhaps the folks who wrote and tuned the software were influenced by both Kodak and Agfa. I liked Agfa as in photographing a chateau in Kodachrome it looked fresh-painted while in Agfachrome it looked more natural. As always, YMMV

Loved the informative review. Now maybe a stupid question, how do I really know that the camera needs an adjustment/ service? Mine has about 20000 exposures, very little dust on the sensor, focus seems spot on. I see a lot of people having their camera serviced, I seldom see them explaining why...
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard7 жыл бұрын
If the focus is spot on, there's no reason to service the camera. Only if the focus is off or the camera took some rough hits it needs service. As for sensor cleaning, one can either do it oneself, or use a pro photo store nearby that offers sensor cleaning. I prefer to have someone clean my sensors who are used to it. Better cleaning and it's not my problem.

And about the M8 vs M9 ? the big difference is that M9 is full frame ? I have the M8 and I love it!
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard8 жыл бұрын
I never got the M8. I was using Leica R with digital back and just when I was ready for digital M, the M9 came out so that was the first one I worked with. Many still use the M8 and M8.2 which is a proof that it works.

Hi Thorsten. In your opinion, what's the best place/website to buy a used Leica in terms of price, condition and reliability?
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard8 жыл бұрын
I don't have any particular favorite. Most sites you find with Leica are reliable, unless it looks too good to be true. That is the rule that also goes for eBay. If it looks too good, it probably is (and a fake post). I'll buy from stores and from websites depending on where I am, what they can deliver, the VAT rules and trying to avoid to send thins across from where it may hang in customs.

Hey Thorsten Noctilux or 75mm summilux??
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard7 жыл бұрын
Noctilux I would say. The look is very much the same, and so is the 80mm Summilux-R f/1.4 that was made for the R system (about $1,000 second-hand). The 75mm has a long focus thread and it's a bigger lens. The Noctilux is just so damn sexy it's hard not to keep wanting one even you found anything that looks close to it ...

Sorry, Thorsten! That I raise this topic once again, just being curious! - I want to get into (digital) Leica! I have an analog M4-P and watched your videos. I can't afford a M10 and comparing a M240 and a M9 you go recommend a M9- But why? Does it makes a difference, that I do Streetphotopgraphy!? - M240 seems to be better, getting into Leica! Here are the reasons why! It is heavier, a little bit bigger and feels sturdier. It has a LiveView, making it easier to focus and get the picture in hard situations. - It has LED-Light, where the M9 needs a third window...What about lowlight-situations?! The M240 can be equipped with an IVF, making it easier to focus, especially in lowlight-situations and with wide-angle-lenses. - Taking about ergonomics, the M240 has worse noobs and no cursor. Is that a pity?! And the ISO-Performance ism´t so good! But over all! don't you have to consider, what is your style of photography before you buy a Leica M?!
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard5 жыл бұрын
I would go with whichever makes you lust the mot to get out there. M240 and ME are fairly inexpensive, the M9 going up in price as a classic. M10 will be around as second hand, but not at low prices anytime soon. A good solid used M240 is not a bad idea

Lovely camera and a kind of legend but returned mine as I could not get used to the VERY poor quality of the rear LCD. Many others have commented on this I know, but of course there is no solution. What would be useful is a video with a direct comparison of the typ 262 and the M-D typ 262. It's a tricky choice. My own preference is for the latter but the former has the LCD and is a sensible simplification over the M240. As they say, the freedom of choice is the curse of the western world!
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I don't think the LCD is a real problem. You can tell the exposure, and that is what you need to see on the screen. The details is for a larger screen.

Dear Thorsten, I have a leica M8.2 and was thinking upgrading to the M9 mainly for those extra pixels and a couple of extra ISO points and in order to use the lens as they are with no crop factor, I'm not sure since some people claims that the M8 delivers nice files and doesn't worth the upgrading, so clearly you know your stuff, what do you think? Should I upgrade?
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard7 жыл бұрын
The M9 is full frame, the M8 has a crop factor. That is the main reason in my opinion to consider the M9.

Hi Thorsten, thanks for the nice video! Got a quick one for you: given that I already have a Summilux 35mm, for the same budget (around 2k€), would you go for M9 or an M6+Fuji X100F? Thank you.
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard7 жыл бұрын
I think I would go for the Leica M9. It's so classic, and there is the detail that the Leica sensors are optimized for the Leica lenses: There is a very small distance from lens to sensor. I find that Sony, Fuji, etc doesn't really utilize the lenses, and that's a shame when the Leica lens can perform so well....

well I think 95% with less than 500 dollar leica lens is stretching a little bit. I have old elmar and it cannot compete with modern leica at all.

Hi Thorsten, today the price of a used m9 and m240 is only a few hundred dollars difference (almost the same). I can only afford to get one of these. Which one should i go for?
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard6 жыл бұрын
The M9 went up in price again, so it's up in the air. In many ways the M240 is superior in ISO, speed and all, but the M9 has the charm somehow. People just can't let go of them. And when they do, they buy them again...

CCD sensors have inferior low light performance, and the majority of the industry has abandoned the technology all-together.
@thomasmorus34068 жыл бұрын
And CMOS is much cheaper than CCD Selling the camera with CMOS instead of CCD at the same price point will lead to higher profits. This could be a reason why the industry liked to switch to CMOS :-)

Thank you. Most beautiful review of M9 I have watched. Opted for a mint very low shutter count boxed M9 last year at almost 3800 us$. Broken once lugs went off. Other than this Im really loving the CCD sensor pictures coming from film. Also I can play with lenses compared to a Q with CMOS. This is a good digital supported by the M7 I use. Now hoping to have some more Leica lenses. I have the 28 Elmarit and 50 Summarit. Zeiss 50 Planar and Voigt 35f14. I hope you can do a 28 Summilux review because I cant see anything good in youtube. I tried it in Las Vagas and so nice. The price is just too expensiveü

I never understood lack of high ISO being a problem. I never use anything higher than 3200, and then get creative. I usually even stop down the speed to get an under exposed night time look.
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard7 жыл бұрын
Yes, considering that in the old days folks were able to make night photos with 50 ISO film and f/2.8 or f/4.0 lenses, the quest for higher and higher ISO is a little silly. If one went through the archive most people would learn that a minimum of their photos were in fact taken at high ISO speeds. If I search my archive, 6% of my photos were made with 3200 ISO or higher, and less than 20% were made with any ISO above 200.
@alexgrd757 жыл бұрын
Exposing for the highlight does the trick. I shoot a Leica m6 and a summicron, the max iso I'm pushing my films is 1600. It is more than enough. Not being able to take photos in difficult light conditions is a part of the process too.

this camera came with a sensor issue and it gets corroded. Before they used to replace it for free, now: "For all camera models listed that were purchased over five years ago, we offer our customers the following programme: from 1.12.2018 onwards, the customer pays a contribution amounting to 1,550 euros (1,303 euros plus 19% VAT) for the replacement of the affected CCD sensor." -- for the sensor !

Don't you find the 240 files boring compared to the M9? The new camera just don't have the look and color that sets it apart from other cameras.
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard8 жыл бұрын
I think it (always) take a while to get a new camera sensor/model to behave the way you want it. That's how it has been for me with every camera (and scanner) I ever used. I find that after a while (2-3 months), when I review the look, I gained more than I had before. But I also think the truth is that back when we had just one film look, that worked well. And still does, actually. It was less dynamic range, simpler and it worked. I'll get into some of that in a later article/video :-)
@TCKe8 жыл бұрын
Love to hear more on that. I see evolution as both positive and necessary, but sometimes we try to reinvent the wheel and we get lost in the process. To me Its about the essence and the transparency of the tool. Bonding with it to the point one does not even notice it anymore and it becomes an extended part of one self... Just because new tech is more efficient does not meen that the criteria is met.

Hi Thorsten. Big fan of your work. Your blog on the M9 really helped a lot when i got into the Leica system. Quick question, I'm planning to let go of my M9P and get myself a Leica Q. As much as i love the ccd colours coming out of the M9, i need a camera with autofocus. Also the metering of the M9 is something i've struggled with ever since i got the camera (3 years ago). I didn't mind it before though because the image coming out of the camera was fantastic. But lately, i find myself needing a quicker way of snapping shots. How i wish i can afford to keep the M9 and get the Q but budget constraints restricts me on keeping both. I do have the M6 and that one i'm keeping :-)
