Im a bf fan. Im a 2042 defender. Why? Cause I had great moments and great fun. Because I love the potential it has. But since the get go I know that all the others bf games are better. 2042 is my main bf game since season 1 though. I watched your hole video. You are spot on in every way. For bf it’s not only about KD ratios. The immersion, the atmosphere , the graphics, the music, the attention to detail is what pulls me in and keeps me there. 2042 has none of that for the moment. I might be in love with a first round pick that will never have what it takes to make it to the majors. But sometimes shits happens in their developpment and they end up beeing a late bloomer. I feel they can turn the ship around if they do what is needed. Its a game. It can be modified. Anxious to see the kaleidescope rework. Bottom line: your so god damn right and this is by far one of the best videos on KZbin. Well edited, narrated, everything is said with class and you are constructive. I hope EA/Dice sees this. You really did nail this video, 30 minutes wasn’t even long enough in my opinion but the only enjoyment I can find is a server with 128p hardcore rush, as the match goes on it becomes clear how much of a cluster fuck it is tho

Crossplay needs to be off by default. A skilled player with a mechanical advantage should NOT be paired up with pc players and I assume Dice did this because they anticipated player counts. Lets hope next round they go with their normal route of crossplay off

Pretty much spot on. You need to give the players areas to fight over that are both interesting and hold value (in terms of winning the game). Because they over-valued the concept of "player freedom" with the vehicle spawn system, that 2nd item can't happen on 2042. In bf4, certain flags had additional choppers or tanks that could help turn the tide in a match. So it made sense to prioritize those flags and defend them (although, to be fair, Bf4 often suffers from "musical flags" anyway). So many totally useless and uninteresting flags in 2042 (I think I've been to the top flag on Breakaway 3 times since the game came out) . And as noted, the lack of cover makes traveling back and forth to them incredibly frustrating. It really is baffling how horrible of a job they did designing them. They've started to play better as they've cut down on the available vehicles, (not as many to farm people moving over the vast areas between flags) but they only did that because they couldn't figure out a better way to balance the game. 128 players can work if the rest of the design is well thought out (class balance, vehicle balance, map design, etc.). But they literally just increased the maps to 4X the size of previous games, left 600 meters of empty space between flags and assumed it would work. Total clown show.

Must watch for the map designers. - Whoever decided what the maps should look like has no experience in Battlefield games or he played them without understanding what makes Battlefield - Battlefield. The maps were supposed to be played in 128 mode or maybe for a BR mode? In both 128 players and BRs they are unplayable. - Another cause is they are looking for inspirations in real life. This is a futuristic game, we don't need the real locations to be put in the game if they are not good for the gameplay. Kaleidoscope as an example - a South Korea city. I can't believe someone who played old BF games can look at a flat surface with sky-scrappers around could think: Oh, I'd like to see that as a map... - Yet another reason I can think of is at first they thought about a massive destructions that supposed to be put in the game (levolution-like) and that's why they need those high buildings, maybe a flat ice area so the ice breakes etc. And yet again it is just to look cool in trailers and sell the game for people who never played this franchise or will never understand what makes the game playable... and they only put the tornado in the game (which sucks 🙃 ).

Focused too much on size - it's not it for me and I believe for most people. It's the cover (which also entails verticality) and even more importantly sight lines. Directionality is probably the best name of the issue. Let's take a look at hourglass on breakthrough. Contained, small, mostly open spaces which most often have no cover to hold back incoming enemies. At the same time there is no directionality to the incoming enemies - on breakthrough the flags are placed in the middle of wide and playable areas, so if you would like to sit on the flag and defend it as the objective says, you are screwed no matter how good your aim is. You'll just get swarmed and shot (or driven over - another issue I could talk about) from 360 degrees - this is the core problem. With previous games you could always anticipate the direction enemies are coming from or where they are and could play accordingly, moving from cover-to-cover, blocking lines of sight with elevated terrain. You can clearly see in this video how you hugged the rock walls and aim peaked around them on that bf2 remade map - you don't even think you blocked vision on you from 50% of the directions or more more, but your brain was fully aware of it. Find such a place on hourglass... Every piece of cover can be evaporated from in front of you, so first stages of breakthrough with current layout end as soon as they start - the objectives are not even placed where the cover is which melts my brain how incompetent designers are (forcing players to defend from back of the objective, which basically gives those to the enemies). The only thing you can do on breakthrough is hope that your team realises how important it is to form as wide line on the map as possible to cover flanks- the moment your team tries to "play objective" you loose, swarmed with no idea what's happening as too much random stuff surrounds you. The wide area between objectives is mitigated by vehicles (which can be called for from anywhere - no one seem to use that new feature tho). The issue with that wide area is the same as what's described above - you just push forward with nothing to do apart dodging bullets from all the snipers that now can clearly see you and flying machines as - again - there is no cover and since rotation lines become spread across those open spaces, you don't encounter many fights while traversing. It's not the size - it's boredom while running. If they choose to funnel people through predictable lines (with smart cover placement for example) this wouldn't be an issue at all. Verticality you tackled spot on. It's how the colossal and abrupt the hight variability on the map is and how it dominates. No comments here. It's all about that feel of control which this game doesn't give you. Chaos is the best word I can use here which ties perfectly into broken EA management as this chaos and map design comes from chasing what BR games did and trying replicate this. It's all incompetent trends chasing which backfired hard. They did all that to appeal to BR fans alienating core BF audience. They smelled the money they can make on skins and build the BF-like game around it, that is a mix of their own franchise, Warzone and APEX. The rest of the most hated features such as those cheesy lines at the end of rounds were there to showcase the skins - pure business decisions that brought nothing to players, only looked stupid and wasted your time. Ever wondered why there is so few weapons in the game and attachment sets replaced this variety? It's to encourage you to buy the skins and give them room on designing those so that guns are still recognisable (the game has model altering skins). Hell - the game already has a store, microtransactions and freaking battlepass like typical mobile game does even tho it still fails to launch matches 70% of the time on PS5 for me since release.

Have said from the beginning that 2042 maps feel like some DICE executive's kid with zero experience was put in charge of map design. Hunter must have been his name. BF2142 was way more creative and really did a good job of being different and engaging to the imagination.

I think it was intended for you to use the vehicle spawn system when traveling between the flag clusters but somewhere along the way they universally scaled back the use of vehicle spawns to the point where every time I try to spawn one they’re unavailable. It was probably when they realized there’d be vehicles all over the place littering the maps and it was a stupid idea.

You forgot another point I noticed about these cluster flags. For example, in Discarded, if one team holds 2-3 flags (depending on 128 or 64 players) and another team only holds the base with the cluster flags, all three flags in the cluster only count as 1 rather than 3, so your tickets will run out quicker. Also, you’re constantly trying to hold on to all flags in the cluster but 1 always gets taken, so you are basically not holding any flags and even though you’re fighting a fierce battle, in numbers you are just losing. That makes you want to go and get other flags but the distances are so latge that once you step out of the ship you probably get gun down by vehicles and such trying to rush the cluster. It just doesn’t flow.

The maps in 2042 are so ugly and soulless. Crazy to how its set in 2042 and looks just the same as mw2 in terms of technology and advancements. Hell even black ops 2, set in 2025 looked far more futuristic with sci fi esque weapons and vehicles.

Thank you for your dedication to this video. I played BF2042 at launch, but I only managed to clock in 150 hours since then, by far the lowest of any BF games I’ve played. A couple of days ago, I installed the game again after not playing it for almost a year, and I immediately became frustrated with the maps and how they play, especially in modes like Breakthrough. What was once one of the best additions in franchise history, introduced in BF1, has somehow progressively gotten worse in Breakthrough. Usually, BF maps are designed with specific game modes in mind (which is why playing Breakthrough in BF1 felt great), but it seems the only guideline for BF2042 map design was accommodating 128 players. Even after reworks, the maps still feel big and open. In Breakthrough, almost all of the matches I played ended with the attacking side storming through points. Once they enter the point, it's almost impossible to cap it back due to most of the maps being open and the spawn points being atrocious. In Breakthrough, you usually can expect from which side enemies will come (when you defend)-from the front or the sides. However, in BF2042, due to the maps being so open, enemies can just come from behind, surround you, and kill you on the point; after that, it's game over. What's tragic is that BF2042 is the game that would benefit from fortification building the most-it's a shame they scrapped that mechanic. Long story short, the maps of BF2042 were made just for marketing purposes and nothing else. I HOPE they learned their lesson and will go back to focusing on well-designed maps with better destruction, rather than trying to reinvent the wheel with each installment.

Ik I'm late to this discussion, but I'd also like to add from the Breakthrough pov, practically all of this remains true. The amount of times I'm on offense and we literally can't even make it to the FIRST objectives due to the absurd amount of open ground we have to cover on foot leaves me either just sniping or moving up so slowly that we've already lost by the time I get even SOMEWHAT near an objective. Like, it's sad. I never really got into Battlefield until super super late into BF4's cycle just before BF1 launch so I was really excited getting to see a more modern-esque setting again (not to say I dislike WWI and WWII era because I love BF1 and BFV)

I'm confused why would you need to rent a server for BF1 - you could just join one of the hundreds of empty servers... you can spawn just fine in conquest in that game. Other than that, good video. We need more of these in-depth looks at the core Battlefield systems, but seems like most of the smarter people have been driven away by the continuously lowering quality of new games and DICE's attitude - I remember plenty of people doing these more in-depth videos back in the day, nowdays, it's more of a rarity, when it's much easier to just do a lazy "real commentary" take like jackfrags does. People just don't even want to talk about Battlefield anymore, unless it's to hype up the latest updates.

I got excited speculating after seeing the Hourglass concept art. Hopefully the rework is good, I want them to cut off the stadium, maybe the desert/village parts too, make the dunes way bigger reaching the skyscraper rooftops, steeper so they create actual lanes with cover. There's potential but we'll see how season 3 goes.

Very enjoyable and interesting to watch, even though I’m not as well versed in battlefield as you or anyone who plays battlefield competitively, I’ve been working on building up my knowledge and understanding of how battlefield plays witb the goal of getting better myself. I was starting to get a feel for what makes the maps I like actually fun. The moment I stepped into the beta I knew something was off, the sheer amount of running. I would run to get to an objective, only for it to be captured by the time I arrive and I’ll have to run to the next one. As I’m running there’s no potential to slip away and sneak around by using a clever path or section of cover because there is none, and people on high ground can see you from the entire map. The engagement section is one that I talk a lot about with my friends. I said once that 2042 doesn’t look very good graphically, and they responded by saying it actually looks really impressive. But 2042 is anything but. The other day I loaded up bf1 just to fly around and take in the scenery, trying to find any interesting details in the maps that i may have missed before, and it was fun to do. I wouldn’t even consider doing that in 2042. I really hope dice pick this up and actually learn from their mistakes, but I doubt that will happen. It’s surprising that they didn’t bring anyone in to test the game and provide in depth feedback like a year before launch, things might have turned out differently.

Good video but still I think one massively unerdiscussed problem is the vehicle spawn system in BF2042 + lack of transportation vehicles like ATVs. It feels like everything was as rumoured designed around a 4 man squad Battle Royale rather than 64 Vs 64 players that got reworked into the mess we have. When you actually look at the map sizes they are proportionately when you look at the largest maps of BF2042 Vs largest 64 player maps I mean I tried Hell Let Loose last few days and those maps are *huge* yet feel a lot more atmospheric and detailed than BF2042 with a much smaller team developing it (quick internet suggests no more than 50 of Black Matter Vs 600 at DICE + other devs supporting DICE). Sure it's gotten to over 12 maps over 4-5 years of early access but considering the size of Black Matter and how rich those maps feel Vs 2042... I can't help to think that 2042 was such a mess during development but feels like too many things would've been fine at release or fixable shortly after. And now DICE is stuck with this mess and I'm not sure if they can exactly get out with it with new management because the community itself is a hodge podge of people who want totally different things.

I like the analysis your video and I love you worked with gravity for this. He's awesome too. Also u made a comment about rainbow 6 that verticality doesn't matter, but it does for the attackers. And ill also say that i think larger maps COULD work so long as they have adequate transportation options and the map is fleshed out with adequate cover or obstacles.

Spot on that video. You can analyse teh Breakthrough and Rush maps as well and realise the issues attackers and defenders have with the poor map design

Really good point in the end. They really could have done some cool stuff with the maps. One easy way could have been to revamp like three-four maps from BF3/BF4 and show what they would look like in 2042. Overall there were so many free goalposts they ignored it made everyone confused.

I'll add one thing: the grapling hook and wingsuit make things even WORSE. They become almost mandatory to use because of the ammount of high ground and the lack of cover (why walk when you can fly/use the hook to be faster and have better chances of survival?). They also add to the bad map design by making the combats even more frustrating (players coming from every directions because of these, and because there's no cover, GG).

As a moderate player i suffered alot in bf5 but in this one i have made complete squad wipes in bf5 the match would ended with me getting one or two kills pro and meta players stop controlling every game

I’m on PS4 and tbh have barely touched the game in 12 months. What’s going on with discarded though? You have so much open space to use yet they throw 3 objectives bang in the centre of the map making most of the map irrelevant. Just one of many design flaws in this game that should never have left the drawing board

Bingo. I didn't play much of Battlefield 1's multiplayer, but Giant's Shadow was one of my personal favorites because of the atmosphere and creativity. Same goes for Ballroom Blitz.

I kinda feel like now that I know how to use smokes properly, the maps being more open is really much less of an issue than it used to be to me. It's still not great being spawned in an open field 100m from the nearest objective, but at least I can sort of hide now. So far, to me, the season maps have all been pretty fun.

I can live with the maps as they are. What is most troublesome is the game performance. low FPS, poor net code, Players showing up out of nowhere, not able to see players when they are right in front of you while they see you perfectly, console players super twitching and aim assist, etc make the playing experience not fun for a lot of the time. I could write a book on the issues but it would be pointless.

Thanks for putting the work into this and articulating this in a thought out way. Imagine if on Hainan the objective was on the roof and the only way up there was the elevator or drop in from a chopper. That's 2042.

When I go back to bf4 to play TDM I feel like my character is running in very thick mud with weights on his ankles lol On orbital conquest, its so horrible.. for me i get shot from so many directions as its not linear. Also there's so many places from above to get shot from. It just feels hopeless and i soon abandoned the game for closer combat action. Also on TDM it's hard when the entire opposing team is just bum rushing each spawn point with pin point accuracy. Add in Caspian boarder. Their's no tipping the tieds. Bf4 tdm is 1000% better. There's a few game modes and maps that play really well in 2042 tho and some nice fun play. But over all bf4 is better but just over played n got old

I also think thay devs just used the regular 64 player maps size properties with added flat ground in it... 2.And i do think that some specialist also reason for such flat maps

I cant even remember the names of the maps 90% of the time. Battlefield 5 had a lot of flaws but it actually felt like WW2, I can remember all of those maps and their names at least.

Been waiting for this video since the game came out. I love Battlefield but hate 2042s maps. BF3 had the best maps.

In real warfare they just fight wherever. They don't get to chose their maps.

I think the reason why the maps in 2042 are so large are for 2 reasons: 1. 128 players obviously 2. To reflect what a real battlefield and it's points of interest would look like. As we've seen from the countless footage of the war in Ukraine and the Middle East, we can see that many of the settings are downright open fields or open areas. Not many, or at all, battles take place in cities, subways, or hotel resorts. I think 2042's map situation is actually DICE trying to be a bit more realistic on what exactly you're fighting for as well. Rather than a decommissioned subway system with little tactical advantage, why not a solar farm in Egypt as a source for power for military bases? Instead of a hotel resort, why not a space center where a military can fire off nukes and spacecraft for reconnaissance? I could go on. However, the maps in 2042 could still use more over and flow, which is what DICE is slowly, but surely working on.

But Battlefiled ins't a simulator like Arma and isn't designed as such. At some point you must discard realism and make conscious and deliberate design choices in your games.

Renewal and Breakaway are only two I hate now. Other than that I have fun on them all now that the size is reduced for 64. Just wish they would make other 64 player variations.

Only time I'm having a bad time is because the map design lol. Super sad bf title. Worst I've ever played and hands down not even a bf feel.. if u like it hats off to u. But I think I speak for 75% of the community when I say "this game is trash"

BfV got less chorring when they added those neutral vehicles on spawn flags. I clearly remember when they did it on Hammada. Its just incredible that they messed this up AGAIN. Why repeat what worked before, right? The objective is give us the worst experience possible, is that it? For us to hate the game as fast as possible... Where's the reason for that??? Simple: destroy the business, so they can sell it for profit. Dirty money. Only that to justify those recent videogame industry decisions. We are the only ones to suffer by those.

BF2042 is a scam. People need to accept. Its not the first time they were making an FPS game. You cannot make mistakes like that.

Battlefield Vietnam was my favorite expansion maps and everything was good.also loved 1943 on PS3 fat 😎 bad company 2 was also spot on the golf course was epic.

The maps do suck but it's the least of the problems with this garbage game. Hit registration is totally broken. Team matching is also a bust with uneven teams in both numbers of players and skill level. And don't get me started on the bugs...so many I'd have to take a day to list them. I played this on PS4. EA.DICE stole our money and have been lying to us ever since. I will never buy another game from those thieves and liars.

map design is terrible in this game I agree, so bad that i have to play i the old portal maps to have fun in this game !!!!!! so i always play in exodus conquest mode !!!!

Yeah, the spawning is ass in this game. Then, do ya ever figure maybe 128p should be reserved for something more Planetside 2 scaled n it simply isnt gunna work well in this game? To many players perhaps. I always hated giant battles. I much prefer 32 players honestly. Maybe 48
