Lifting culture was hugely popular in my company. Probably 70% of guys were hitting the gym after work trying to get bigger, and that’s after morning runs and everything.

Also remember there's a time limit. The only thing that was missing from my experience, that would have been easy and inexpensive were pull-ups. Squats, pulls, push, sit-ups, run, and some burpees can build tremendous fitness.

Nothing like endurance and strength training combined. Always push yourself beyond your comfort level in all types of weather conditions. Make yourself uncomfortable and miserable so that you are ready for anything. Keep up a positive mindset ALWAYS! TRAIN DONT COMPLAIN!!! CSM Chapa

That’s why everybody should start at callisthenics in the first place being able to do 100 push-ups 25 to 50 chin ups before you start going into a gym and working out definitely recommended. If a man keeps doing work out no matter what his age and health it helps you to live longer too .

Functional fitness is the answer. You can get people in great shape by carrying water cans or sand bags. Or dragging a tire there are many things you can do to get people in great shape.

Thats why I liked deployments and extended training rotations. Squads were left to do their thing. We usually just hit the weights, and did rucking a couple times a week.

There was a great article, written in the 80s after GBs operation in the Falklands. It discussed this very thing. The author emphasized rucking and maneuvering in kit. I wish I could find that article…

I retired in 2014 and went thru numerous stages of PT while serving, strength training for most Soldiers (not all) seems to happen when deployed because between patrols and video games what else is there. For me as former First Sergeant of an Airborne Infantry Company I saw the influnence of cross fit for example enter into the PT realm and it really did not lend well to what we did I saw more injuries from it (bad form) and countless other made up excercises or programs. In the end for myself and my platoon sergeants we got it down to Deadlifts, Bench Press, Squats, Pull ups and Dips along with a somesort of Abdominal at a minimum to carry the load we had, climb over walls, walk up mountain sides etc rinse and repeat for the length of the patrol or operation. Just my 2 cents......

I introduced different strength training exercises by implementing telephone poles, cinder blocks, five gal water cans, and buddy p.t. But I showed all my Soldiers how to lift properly and to do an exercise before hand. Also those Soldiers who were interested in weight lifting accompanied me to the gym, and I thoroughly went thru the each, and every aspect of the lift, and what it did to said muscle for that exercise. N.C.Os just need to make time and take the effort to instruct and teach their Soldiers properly. It also helped greatly that I had lots of experience both in powerlifting and bodybuilding.

En mass strength training can take place in large numbers. Push-ups, pull-ups, cals, buddy carries, exercises with sand bags, buddy drags, all can condition. Use your imagination.

Starting strength is the best program on the planet hands down. When we are not at war and are deployed theres no reason why there can't be a gym to do the basic lifts. If a drill sgt cant learn that, then dont make him a drill sgt. Doing push ups past around 25 reps is stupid and just makes you sore. No reason you can't get every male to a 405 squat and 250 bench. Issue is this bmi BS.

You will find some sort of fitness training unit at the initial receiving reception battalion where they may stay for additional weeks before shipping down the street to a basic training unit, but not in actual line units.

Twenty years Infantry and maybe went to the gym about 30 or 40 times. We did combat related weight training. Leave the loose weights for those who like lifting dead weights, it's not for everyone and everyone doesn't need to do them. My personal thoughts are there stupid and a waste of time.
@brettlaw4346
@brettlaw4346 2 ай бұрын
Weightlifting is about preventing injury. Think about how many guys got out due to injuries that could be considered due to muscular imbalances. I agree that trying to maximize hypertrophy gains is a waste of time, and probably deleterious, but not even doing basic Functional Movement Screening? That's just a recipe for problems. And the guys that come up imbalanced or physically weak on specific exercises should be remediated and the weight room doing compound lifts and specific specialty exercises is the way to go. If the average good grunt is able to squat 1.75x BW and the guys coming in are only squatting 1.25x BW, then we can assume that they are too weak to be good grunts. Best and fastest way to get them to 1.75x BW? Protein stuffing, weightlifting and sufficient rest, while keeping them off the booze. If you reframe the situation as the troops are professional athletes, then it is easy to shift the perspective. Preventing one major back injury in one guy could pay for the protein supplementation for an entire company.
@CombatVetx3
@CombatVetx3 2 ай бұрын
Sorry I do not agree, weight lifting in a gym or what they tried as a PT test was a waste of time. Now moving ammo cans, stretchers, water and fuel cans is the type of PT that was needed outside of normal PT and ruck marches. If you want to weight lift then that's on those who want to do that outside of work hours and organized PT hours. It's not for everyone or even 1/4 of people.
