The amazing part is that( while the membership are beautiful) Joseph Smith and those leaders who followed him were the actual apostates from the true Biblical Christ and Father in Heaven. I would encourage deep research. Btw, when l came forward with the info re: my fathers sexual abuse, the ward and stake leadership did nothing. My father said he could not remember. They then decided he could not be held accountable. :-o

My wife and I sent in our letter of resignation from the church in 1998. 2.5 months later, I got a letter from the stake president informing me of a disciplinary council to be held to consider charges against me of "conduct unbecoming a member of the church." I responded by calling the church's membership department in SLC and threatening to sue the church and the SP for attempting to defame my character. The guy I talked to immediately called the SP and told him to cancel the council and apologize to me. That idiotic dumm mass SP thought that it was perfectly fine to hold a disciplinary council on someone who had already resigned from the church. My experience is just one example of the ecclesiastical abuse that pervades Mormonism.

Yep I stopped attending and have no interest in coming back nor going to the temple. As such nobody and I mean nobody in my ward tries to get me to come back. And the funny part is I stopped attending because I was treated like dog crap by my own missionary. She blocked my on facebook for who knows why. All I did was reach out to hear after she got home because I thought she might have liked me and I found her attractive and suitable for a companion. But her treatment of me has destroyed any hope for anything between us. I understand that she may have not been interested but at least be an adult and courtesy to reject me gracefully. Ghosting is such a childish behavior especially when it wasn’t warranted because I never expressed rude or disrespectful or threatening behavior towards her.

In 2007-2008 I was in a very similar position to Nemo. I was on "informal probation" because of apostasy, but the seven definitions of apostasy listed in the handbook didn't actually apply to me - they said I hadn't done any of them, but I was "dancing around them." And so I wasn't allowed a Temple Recommend but I also had no direction on how I could become worthy again. I was essentially deemed unworthy simply for being myself and holding my honest views, nothing codified.. Eventually this led to me actually taking steps that were more seriously out of line with the Church and ultimately resigning from it.

I heard that to repent means to turn your feet away from unrighteousness and towards Jesus Christ. I heard to repent we confess, feel sorry, apologize or make amends, ask for forgiveness, stop doing what is considered wrong - stuff like that. I don’t think anyone is trying to keep repentance a secret. I think it is hard for us to be humble and forgiving of others and that keeps us from repenting of stuff we should repent for.

This is so similar to my situation last year. The church banned me from church property because I have Tourette syndrome and they are offended by my tics. They actually went as far as having church legal write a letter threatening to have “law enforcement… trespass [me] from church property.” So there I was, banned from church property and yet they expected me to still pay tithing, take a bogus missionary calling, and pretend like everything is fine while silencing me so I was not allowed to talk to anyone about it. So anyway Nemo, I can relate to having your church privileges restricted when you’ve literally done nothing wrong. I can relate to feeling like an outcast as I was unofficially banned several times over many months before they finally gave me the official legal letter permanently banning me with a legal threat. And again I’ve literally done nothing wrong. Just existing with Tourette’s is my only crime/sin. My ward had the same awkwardness y’all referred to. Like how are the other members supposed to treat me when I’m banned and they don’t even know why? All they see is that Im not there anymore so all they can assume is that I’ve gone less active by my own choice. Only 3-4 people knew the truth as we were silenced and not allowed to talk to anyone about it. So most of the ward thought we went less active by our own choice when in reality I had these restrictions placed on me in secret. We were pressured to lie to other members if they asked what’s going on. So much of what y’all discussed in the video is so relatable to my experience. You’re not the only member to be treated this way. I’m sure there are more than just you and i. So I’m thankful you’re having this discussion because it’s so wrong how the church treats us. It’s manipulative at best and abusive at the worst. So anyway I know it’s not exactly the same situation but I can very closely relate to some of what you’re going through in a small way. Mainly the fact that they’re disciplining you and restricting privileges but not through the proper official channels. But through more sneaky evil unofficial ways. Thanks for sharing your experiences as it helps those of us who can relate to not feel alone. ❤

My LDS son came to visit me this week end. In my former marriage with his Dad, I was disfellowshiped. I had written passionate letters to a prisoner. I'd been married in the temple with 4 children in tow. To help support my family I did a daycare center in my home. Sometimes I cared for 10 kids from sun up to evening. My husband no longer wanted to have more children. The result was abstinence. One 4th of July I didn't see my husband all week end. And I had no idea where he was. Despite my terrible shocking sin... He did pornography and I found it. It was not mild. It was 3 way sex, etc. When I went to the Bishop it was that he had " a masturbation problem." We should pray for him! Eventually I left for many reasons. Finally my LDS son and his wife came back to me. I feel free and I'm finally very happily married to a very kind man who fully understands me! The Book of Abraham "written by his own hand, upon papyrus" - doesn't mean Abraham wrote it with his own hand upon papyrus, apparently, but only because it can be proven that he's not mentioned in the text, the papyrus was from a completely different time period than Abraham, and the papyrus doesn't contain any of the text that Joseph claimed it did. @@confessionsofareformedmormon I’ve been semi-disfellowshipped before. I loved my meetings with the leaders of my ward and stake. Of course, I didn’t blame anyone ever for my mistakes and felt bad for them so I guess I just wanted to make sure I was repentant and utilizing the atonement the best I could. To each their own, if one doesn’t really believe in the basics of Christianity (faith, repentance, forgiveness and redemption) I guess a “court of love” wouldn’t make much sense now would it? Also, law breaking saints are excommunicated quite often when their crime or sin calls for it. But unless a person actually confesses on their own of a disgusting and or sin legal consequences, how can the church be held responsible for what its imperfect members do? I never did anything gross or illegal, but if I did, as a member I would have to accept legal consequences for what I’ve done in order to be recognized as a member who had fully repented. You can’t please everyone, and I wish my church would stop trying to quite honestly.

Well so far, agreeing with you 100%, Nemo. Its very difficult to hold the space you're holding. It's desperately needed, though. I've been wondering for some time when the church would come down on you. I think it's only a matter of time before the church either tries to neutralize or comes down hard on 21st Century Saints, as well. I don't want to be unduly cynical, but I've been speaking up in the church since I was literally about six. The price you pay is real. If you keep it local to your ward and stake, you're just a pariah within your ward and stake, and your family is ostracized socially, including your kids. If you get more public, things get worse. Dissent of any kind is not tolerated. And I totally get how annoying it is to have them act like this isn't your church. My family is members back to Joseph Smith, however many generations that it. I'm related to about half the apostles and probably the prophet. By birthright, this is my church. My ancestors built it, paid for it, sacrificed their possessions and lives for it, walked across the plains for it, died in Winter Quarters for it, suffered in the Martin Handcart Company for it, and have kept it running. I've been active and faithful my entire life. But I'm in the same position. Open my mouth to say anything, and I'm out. My temple recommend will be expiring in a few months. I'm worthy to hold one but I think they'll be denying me a new one because I've spoken up publicly, especially on abuse within the church, and on local leadership looking the other way and ignoring abuse that's happening, and I've publicly called out local members for commiting perjury related to abuse. The church's track record on abuse is despicable and I'm saying so. I won't be stopping. I'm done tolerating the abuse. People outside the church just don't get this. The church isn't just someplace you go once or twice a year for an hour service. It's a way of life that is entertwined with every aspect of your life. As you keep saying, it's your tribe. I get so tired of people saying, "Well, just go somewhere else," like you're switching brands of toothpaste. I hope you can find a way to keep holding this space. The last four years have been brutal and finding your podcasts has really given me hope. There are still Mormons out there who are normal, ethical, reasoning people. I was beginning to wonder. They also make me laugh. I feel like we've forgotten how to laugh at ourselves in the church. And I'm so damn tired of lies and lying. I detest lying. Number one mistake you can make with me is lie to me. And the church is lying and has been lying. So hope you can work something out, although you must of course put your and your family's well-being first. FYI, I was in church today. High councilor Sunday. Today's talk: why criticizing the church in any way whatsoever for any reason whatsoever is evil, has evil motives, and is being led by Satan. Essentially straight to hell, even though we don't officially believe in a hell. He specifically called out non-members, ex-members who have left the church, and members still in the church who are critical in any way. He did cut some very patronizing slack to non-members who are uneducated, afraid of our weirdness, and just waiting to be converted, and also said criticism from non-Mormons is good because it toughens us up and humbles us, but he came down on ex-members and existing members with a vengeance. His talk was full of inaccuracies, which always drives me nuts. He trotted out every single cliche you've ever heard. I won't repeat them. I watched the congregation to gauge the reception to this. Judging by body language and facial expressions, I do not think this was as well-received as he probably hoped, but we'll see. I also don't think the church is going to do anything but double down on this. The leadership seems to genuinely not get or care how bizarre this looks. I genuinely don't get how they think it looks like this behavior is stuff Christ or the church's own rules endorse.

I first joined the church in 2007. In 16 years of being a member I never once got to go to the temple for my endowments. I didn't drink, smoke, take drugs, I was married, I attended, I studied, etc. I begged for years. Excuse after excuse was made "oh well you didn't attend for a couple of weeks here" (my kids had chicken pox so I had to stay home with them), "oh do the temple prep class again", etc. I would come home every Sunday in tears every week without fail. There was no reason for me to not have had a recommend, they just straight up didn't like me as I didn't fit into their clique.

I repeat, 15. Considering there are over 35,000 wards worldwide, that's a lot of Melchizedek Priesthood holders. Would you like to grab your calculator just to make sure? While wards require a minimum of 15 active Melchizedek Priesthood holders, branches require 4 Priesthood holders, at least 1 who is an active Melchizedek Priesthood holder. Nemo, thank you and the Britvengers for your good works. I’m tired too. I’m tired of young women advisors who tell my daughters that the old FSY specifics still apply, even though they’re now unwritten rules. I’m tired DesNat-adjacent apologists supporting the church’s blatant financial misconduct. I’m tired of youth dances going out of their way to display a rule of no same-sex dancing. I’m tired of “for thee not for me” rules from the leadership. I’m tired of being mischaracterized by those who hold the microphone. I do not judge anyone who feels compelled to leave all that behind, and I’m of the opinion that if no one leaves nothing changes. At the same time, if everyone who would occupy the progressive space leaves, then nothing changes. I feel compelled to stay and help the church live up to its own standards of truth, and I’m grateful for people like you, Nemo, who dare to criticize and do so appropriately. I went through a period of time doubting and questioned all the same things that are being brought up here - but I realised that I was being apathetic and once I started to truly engage in the simple core elements of prayer and supplication to talk to Heavenly Father and then study and pondering of the scriptures- I started to be able to hear his voice again. Yes - this is really cliché to say - but interesting that during that period of time if someone were to say something similar to me it would resonate - it needed a whole lot of humble pie - down to the point of pain with other things going on in my life which made me realise there was no one else concerned about me - no one but Christ and a loving father in heaven. Once I had got that solid base rerooted - the lens of faith that I saw things though helped me to see that any flaws created by people are their own burdens and mistakes that they will have to be accountable one day. Ultimately this is his church and I can do my part by lifting up local leaders who are just trying to do their best, and following the principles and doctrines of Christ that I started to find again when I listened with that spirit rather than a spirit of trying to find fault. I have said many times that I’m impressed with the efforts and production quality of these videos, I would love to see what you can do if that research, time and effort were focussed on positive things about the church, teachings and good things people are doing in the church.

Well if the family is very Mormon. They most likely have a problem with the family member leaving the church... They'll think he/she got tempted by Satan lol

I have experienced two things to be true with over half of my family leaving the LDS church. First, yes it’s hard, but it isn’t unusual for people to leave their faith, happens and will happen all the time, does nobody read their scriptures anymore? It’s all over the Bible. Second, if the ones who leaves respect the ones who don’t, and vice versa, I’ve found that the family will stick together, friends can stick together if boundaries are set, nobody has been cancelled in my situation although two of our siblings have self cancelled because they just doing have much in common anyone and aren’t open to other people’s opinions and or beliefs so it makes it hard to not lose some friends or family members closeness that was once there. It’s when the member portion visits the now non-member portion and expects the now non-member portion to live like they did before leaving that it gets hard. Even harder, is when the now non-member portion visits the member portion and expects them to not carry on as members. For example asking the still member portion to remove pictures of temples, baptisms, mission pics, proclamations, books, magazines and even not talk about god or church and I mean AT ALL. It all just depends on the individual members who stay and leave. I am mixed. My own family walks on eggshells around my siblings who’ve left because they’re rather easily offended and are super emotional humans now. On the other hand my in-laws side, we carry on pretty much as normal, if things get uncomfortable it’s noticed and we respect each other. The line is still there, a little apprehension at times, but we’re still every Sunday dinner types despite the coming divorces and hangovers and different beliefs or non-beliefs. We watch the kids that some of the now non-members leave behind to go party (not all of them party, most do now though) and come back the next day hungover (or fighting because one wants open relationship and the others isn’t sure but they’re experimenting and there are no rules anymore so neither can get angry so why not, right?) We’ve got others who left our church and go to another so no crazy stuff we just worship Jesus differently. As of right now, none that have left are antis, thank goodness, they just left and have moved on, no attacks on us and we don’t attack them. We can coexist. It just all depends.

@@Eagle_Powers depends why you leave. If it's because you think Nelson is a fake and evil, you will loose friends and family.

Excommunicating not excommunication. Edit on earlier comment but know you all could pick it up. Thanks for your work. Y'all are making me tear up.
