Even though the Porsche 718 Boxster costs twice as much as an ND2 Mazda MX-5 Miata, the MX-5 just might be the better sports car. I'll show you the top 3 reasons why.

I have both the ND2 and a 986S. Honestly, it’s hard to favor one over the other and the more I think about it the harder it is to come up with an answer. Despite the fact that they are both roadsters, they drive so differently a direct comparison seems like an injustice. I think I need to make my own video about it.

Thanks for a great video. I just got into my first MX-5 ('19 RF GT-S) while waiting for a Cayman GTS 4.0 allocation. I'm loving the Miata! I haven't given up my place in line yet, but wondering what I'll do when my turn comes up. I LOVE the sound of the NA flat 6 (I too have owned a 991.1 C2S with Sport Exhaust), but, to your point on gearing, on the 718 Cayman/Boxster, you can hit 80 mph in 2nd. Not that much opportunity to safely (or legally) use the whole rev range on the street... I'm enjoying winding the Miata out to 7,000+, rowing through the gears and tossing it into the corners!!!

Very provocative statement and having just watched your video, a very thought provoking one too! The current 718 GTS is the car to have in Cayman or Boxster guise - but it’s thrice the price of an MX-5 (what we call them in the UK). Great review, great energy James 🙌🏽

Agreed with every bit of this. We love our 2019 ND Gt-s! In between our 1990 MX-5 NA and our current car, we had a 2003 BMW Z4. We traded in the Z4 on the ND2 and could not have been more thrilled. It seems that some of the reasons you like the ND2 better than the 718 are the same reasons that I like the ND2 better than the Z4.

I like how you put the bonus point out there without any concerns about ego. I think you're right, the low belt line on the Miata gives people of different stature a fuller roadster feel. And I agree that's an underrated point. A lot of roadsters are designed with the old porsches and MG midgets of the day in mind. Those cars were smaller too back then. And there was a reason for it lost on today's bigger is better mantra which doesn't serve the roadster ethos. Also, I agree on the manual. But not just because of the short gearing. Despite being a traditional Japanese cultured company Mazda still like to go against the established grain. That slick shifter, which is ergonomically designed to fall to hand, and biting point on the clutch point to a car designed by true enthusiasts, not some bowtied executive thinking only about the company's bottom line.

Now that the six-cylinder has returned to the Boxster, it is far improved. And it is a marvelous high-end sports car, in a different category, price and equipment-wise, from the MX-5, so comparing them is apples and oranges. I love them both but for real-world driving I prefer the MX-5. While a Boxster might well cost me my license, I can have a thoroughly delightful backroad blast in my MX-5 at sane speeds. And the MX-5's reliability and low operating costs should embarrass Porsche. About the snug interior -- there's a reason. Like Jaguar, Mazda incorporates a "fuselage" design philosophy that envelops the driver with no wasted space and all controls at hand. Americans consider such cars cramped, and for people 6' and over, it is. But at 5' 10" I feel as snug as a bug in a rug in my MX-5. Like yours, our family fleet consists of an ND2 and a CX-5. I can't think of a better combination. Added together, they cost less -- MUCH less -- than many of the solitary Mercs and Audis in our condo's parking garage. Unlike pretty much any German cars these days, our Mazdas will be economical to drive and cheap to maintain for years after their warranties expire.

Porsches are more designed for the track while Miatas are more designed for the street. I love how frequently I have to shift the gears when driving through my the Mountains in my Miata. The short gear range makes it a blast to drive on windy roads with lots of ups and downs. However, if I were going to track a lot and money was not an issue, I would get a 718 Boxster or Cayman T over the Miata.

It sounds like such a close call between the two, that why have both? When I first bought my 2017 GT I thought the body roll was a bit much and took it to Long Road Racing to be converted into the Ultimate MX-5 with an Edelbrock supercharger. So now I think I need to drive a Porsche to see if they are more equal and thus put the money I would have spent into my 65 AC Cobra. Thanks for your vid.

Great video! I’m 5ft 7 inches, and fit perfectly. Wife is 5ft 2 inches so masses of room for her! Here in Australia the entry-level base model 918 Boxster is exactly TRIPLE the price of the top level MX5!! The only other roadster is the BMW Z4, and the base model is TWICE the price, and only comes in auto. The Aust MX5s seem to be lighter than the USA, don’t know if it’s because ours are RHD. I think we also don’t have some of the extra metal associated with crash protection. Mine is completely standard and weighs 2,270lbs with a full tank, so 70 lbs lighter. Very quick and lively around town and in the hills. No doubt our petrol equivalent to USA 94.5 helps too.

@JamesPlaysWithCars
@JamesPlaysWithCars 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Joao, Happy New Year to you too. Aside from the more obvious differences (roof styles, interior and cargo space, etc.) I think the GR86 exhibits a rather different personality than the Miata, and the right choice for each person will depend on what they are looking for. The GR86 is meant to be more serious and precise, whereas the Miata excels in being silly and floppy in stock form. If I were shopping the two, I'd probably go with GR86 if it's my only car, and Miata if it's a dedicated weekend car.

That is actually really helpfull video. I’ve had an mx-5 nb (2002 my), and once a 2001 Boxter owner joined me in a trip with open top, he mentioned that aerodynamics of the NB is much better then a boxter’s. Like we can talk and hear each other easily while driving 30 mph on a miata. He claimed that it won’t be so comfortable in a boxter. Right now i’m thinking about ND miata or used 718 boxter. How do you think, what will feel more comfortable in terms of silence with open top? Thanks. Or both of the cars will do equally loud? :D

I’m glad you found the video to be helpful! If I remember correctly, the 718 Boxster is quieter and more civilized than the ND MX-5 with the top down. I would say both are quite comfortable and civilized at 30mph but a bit difficult to have a conversation in at highway speeds.

I agree with everything you've said. As for the S2k, it is an amazing car, but I actually don't enjoy it around town as much since it feels sluggish unless you really rev it out, and I'm just not at the age to rev out every single gear in town anymore haha. I have an ND2 RF and I love the way it looks with the top up; almost like a mini exotic with the buttress in the rear. It's interesting because the Miata is a lightweight car that feels pretty raw but at the same time, it's also a GT car that you can daily and take moderately long trips in The ride is comfortable, the only thing that is bothersome is the amount of noise, but that's not really a complaint for those deciding on a roadster anyhow. The car just does everything related to driving so well, and it looks nice on the outside and inside.

@@hannafordfitness1568 I have an ND2, so it has the 181hp. It's a 2021. It's fast enough, sure, but the torque is around 150lb-ft so it's nothing exciting until I get around 6000rpm and even then I still think it can use a bit more power. 230hp or 250hp would feel amazing, which is what adding a turbo seems to hit for those with the BBR turbo and tune.

Strangely, the S2000 engine has similarities with a 6-cylinder Boxster/Cayman as the engines are pretty sedate until you get up in the revs. With my old AP2, it always tempted me to rev it -- it was a lot of fun when you could keep the revs high enough but I agree, most of the time you couldn't and the relative lack of torque made it "not fun" in-city (unless you were a hooligan)

I think they're the 2 best looking drop tops around. I'm just 5'8'' and agree with your comments o the fit. Always liked the Subaru flat 4 sound though on my Impreza so happy with 718 soundtrack. Big bonus IMO is luggage space for longer trips in the Boxster and big negative for the ND having tried a few are the hammock seats - I'd have to get a Recaro or 30th Anniversary edition for the seats alone. Factor in the prestige of the Porsche badge and the double the price tag and I think I'm leaning toward to MX5. Thanks again for the vid - it's really given food for thought.

I've been waffling on a Boxster for years now. Had 2 miata's and loved them so of course "big bro" Boxster had to be on the list. But they are now 300hp for a newer model and a much more serious (and dangerous) speed machine. At one point I "might" have used some of that capability but now in my 60's it's doubtful i ever would. But still curious about that straight 6 sound/feel/experience. The IMS bearing was always a concern but for $1,000 just figure it in the purchase price. But NOW with the bore scoring problem costing 10K+ to fix you REALLY gotta love a Porsche to buy one. (JMO) Looking hard at the Miata again and debating a 19+ or a 16-18 (or NC?) and get a turbo. @@EjinRenos You just said japanese cars were hard to work on, that is a super broad and false generalization. Also you're comparing an older car to a newer one, obviously the older car is going to be easier to work on, however if you take a 95 porsche and a 95 civic the civic is going to be 10 times easier to work on. BTW you said they were "an act of contortion" you pretty much said it there.

@@TheFracturedfuture You still reading into something that wasn't said? I literally said it is often an act of contortion and slenderness. In no means did I say "difficult." Do you see that word typed out at all???? I don't. Till now. You're assuming. But since you're a bit slow on the uptake I'll spell it out for you. And comparing a 2002 to a 2006 is old versus new???? Lmao. Changing headlight bulbs on the NC MX5 I owned required two methods. One: remove the whole front assembly to change bulbs. Or two: get a slender handed person to reach between the headlight and frame and twist their hands into a very contorted position to remove the bulbs. Porsche: insert headlight removal tool, twist, slide forward headlight and change bulb. Reverse for reassembly. Takes 10 seconds tops. And this is just one of the ways it's easier to work on such a car versus a Japanese car. And that is literally what I said.

Don't particularly agree with there not being top end on the turbo Boxsters. They feel different for sure, probably because the turbo makes its peak power starting around 3k and holds it pretty flat till 6500 but it doesn't ever really run out and still pushed to the redline of 7500. Miata takes longer to built torque and then falls off right aftter its peak at 5k which creates a feeling of a "peak". I was heavily really considering an ND RF, Turo'd one a few times to try it out. It was a blast in the Southern California Mountains and Canyons, but on the highway was not very pleasant and felt a bit gutless. As someone who is 5' 8" I actually felt like it was made for someone slightly smaller than my size. I daily an Afla Romeo Giulia now and had a few different v8 Challengers before that so I'm more used to having stability from more weight and the power available. I was still considering it despite those negatives as the fun positives outweighed them since I wasn't going to be commuting in it Then along came a 718 Boxster. My wife was actually excited about that as opposed to the Miata which she was fine with me getting but never intended on spending much time in. Managed to get an allocation for a 2024 and ordered one exactly how I wanted it. It's just a different level of car than the Miata. It fills most of the same niche, but so much more. Mid-enigne balance and more power more than makes up for the heavier weight. I also feel like the weight also helps it feel much more stable in most situations. I get that people can't all afford brand new Boxsters so the things the Miata offers for the price is amazing, but its not a reason to pretend that its better. I'm not gonna sit here and pretend my Boxster is better than a Maserati MC20 just because it does a lot of the same things well for less money.

Very interesting mate ..i have owned my NA mx5 for 12yrs and just recently added a 986 to my garage , much older cars but similar difference's, the mx5 is easy to drive and a blast all the time and is light and nibble, the porsche on the other hand is for a more experienced driver and has to be going alot faster to get the same feeling as the mazda going slow , your so right the weight is a huge factor in the experience and the gear shifter is just rubbish compared to the mx5, having said that in the case of the NA the porsche is clearly better build quality and solid as a rock on the road and alot faster even in 2.5 base spec, its good to have both because depending on the situation both shine for different occations , the mx5 is a great track day car and the porsche is great on a long drive, i will probably sell the boxster one day but never the Miata, its alway the answer as they say lol, cheers from New Zealand

At 6ft, I fit perfectly in the ND Miata with room to spare. Even my 6ft 2in friend fits with no discomfort. It really is a well designed sports car that can accommodate a wide range of driver shapes and sizes. I've lusted after the Boxter/Cayman GTS (with the 4.0) since it was released, but it's simply unattainable for me, and I don't believe it's worth 3x the price of a ND3 RF anyway. I loved my ND Miata so much that I just ordered a 2024 ND3 RF GT manual. Unfortunately, with recent price increases, the ND3 is no longer the bargain it use to be, but it's still a reasonably good value, mainly because it truly has no direct competition. Paying the much higher price wasn't an easy decision since ND2 MIatas can be found for 8% below MSRP right now, but the ND3 brings some very desirable upgrades, even compared to the ND2, so I do think it's worth the higher price.

It is a fun car, but I still do think about whether we made the right decision. Could you give us your take as you own both? Thanks.

What an interesting decision to make! I think the CX-30 and MX-5 are so different that it really depends on your specific use case. If you don’t truly need two SUVs in the family, the MX-5 can inject some real excitement into your driving. The CX-30 is fun for a CUV, and the MX-5 is fun, period.

The 718 Cayman and Boxster with the flat 4-cylinder engines sound exactly like a Subaru. I owned a 2005 98.1 Boxster with a flat 6 engine in the exhaust note was glorious. Plus the gearing in most Porsche models is so high you can't enjoy the shifting of Gears like you can in a Miata driving on city streets.

I live in Thailand and have a 2008 NC with upgraded coil overs, sway bars, exhaust etc (and one of 16 manual transmissions in the country). I was thinking about upgrading to a 981 (or maybe a 718) but considering the cost differential (my NC was US$36,000 a couple years ago) and a 2013 base 981 would cost about $120,000 and a new (with just a few options) 718 will run over US$200,000 (up to $300,000 for a fully optioned 718, $350,000 for a fully optioned 718s and over $400,000 for a fully optioned GT4) I just can’t see how the “upgrade” would be worth it. Even on Rennlist in the US, where the cost differential isn’t nearly as much, the MX5s get high marks from the members. I guess I can stop looking now.

As you point out, there is so much you can do with an NC with modifications. When I installed Ohlins and some rear underbody bracing to stiffen the car -- it transformed my NC. This is maybe another point that could have been added to the video. The Miata community is great, and aftermarket support is amazing. In contrast, Porsche requires you to pay a high cost to get their (well-engineered) "modded at factory" cars.

is the bite point on the clutch quite high (clutch pedal high up) on ND2? how does the clutch compared to other cars like S2000 and 86?
@JamesPlaysWithCars
@JamesPlaysWithCars 2 жыл бұрын
Great question-at least on my ND2 and a couple of ND1’s I’ve driven, the bite point is somewhat lower than most other car models. Lower than most BMWs, a bit lower than Porsches, higher than FR-S (which I imagine is same as 86). I don’t recall exactly where the bite point was in the S2000 that I drove a few years ago. I personally find the ND2 clutch to be excellent in terms of lightness but still providing feel. After 7k miles with this car I have become very fluent with this shifter/clutch combination, more so than in any other car I’ve owned. The shifting experience in the ND2 is the most cohesive and satisfying I’ve experienced except perhaps in the S2000.

I’ll be honest, my nd2 has a really linear feeling clutch, dead space at the bottom 20% of travel, and then it gradually grabs up to the 85% point and then it’s just about fully engaged there. Super easy to drive, 1st to 2nd is tough to get the rev matching right when upshifting for a bit but you get used to it and the rest of the gears are stupid easy to drive and really rewarding to learn

Some really excellent points. That is a huge weight difference. I think the Miata feels more delicate -- almost like a toy car. This can be a very good thing. In winter, the heavier Boxster, particularly with the engine nearer to the rear wheels, should be an advantage for grip and avoiding unpleasant surprises. I do think you need to be careful with a Miata in fall and winter because it is relatively easy to unload the rear of the car enough on a slick surface to cause a loss of traction resulting in a spin (been there, done that, wasn't fun.) In many climates this is not an issue at all, though. I am very tempted to get a Miata again, but if I wanted to spend a ton of money and have a true daily driver in a more northern climate, Boxster with PDK would be the answer, I think.
