They would have Monday AFTERNOON playoff games, mainly in the 80's, with a single (4-5 seed) wild card game on the 26th. I guess a divisional round straddled a Christmas Sunday as was mentioned on this video in (I think) 1977 and it resulted in the only time the networks did both their assigned divisional games on the same day.

The Longest Day, as of this writing (January 2022), accounts for 13 players, 2 coaches, and an executive that would go on to become Hall of Famers. On the Dolphins: LB Nick Buoniconti, RB Larry Csonka, QB Bob Griese, C Jim Langer, RG Larry Little, WR Paul Warfield, and HC Don Shula. On the Chiefs: OLB Bobby Bell, DTs Buck Buchanan and Curley Culp, QB Len Dawson, CB Emmitt Thomas, MLB Willie Lanier, K Jan Stenerud, HC Hank Stram, and owner Lamar Hunt.

I remember the 2016 Christmas day being so odd because at 1 o'clock I left the house to go through my normal routine for a Steeler home game. The game as usual was a sell out and the crowd was about 65,000 roughly 3000 short of full capacity but not the worst attended game

I was 10 years old that Christmas, I got a football and a helmet. At one time there was a picture of me in the helmet, holding up the ball like I'm going to throw and the Dolphins-Chiefs game was on in the background. I also went out to play with friends and the weather was very mild for December in Buffalo.

It's 2022 and now they are playing THREE games on Christmas. This needs to STOP. I love football as much as the next guy - but Christmas is one holiday that should remain sacred. We don't need the screams, the shouting and the occasional DISAPPOINTMENT that comes with football on Christmas Day (especially so late in the season.) The NFL makes enough damn money - and they already play on Thanksgiving. Again, I love football - but the NFL needs to leave Christmas alone and keep this day a FAMILY holiday, not a FOOTBALL holiday.

So, here's an interesting factoid (and I use the term "interesting" in its broadest definition) about the 1999 Denver at Detroit game, played at the Pontiac Silverdome. At the time, all alcohol sales were prohibited in Michigan on Christmas Day. I always wondered what, if any, the effect was on concession income. I remember hearing a little bit about it before the game, but now do not remember if there was anything of consequence. At any rate, the laws now allow for alcohol sales after 12 Noon, but still an interesting bit of trivia to add into the mix.

I remember this Miami-Kansas City playoff game. I was a kid and my grandmother came to my house for Christmas dinner. My grandmother wanted to watch the Lawrence Welk show which was airing on another channel. Naturally I was rather upset that I was missing part of the playoff game for Lawrence Welk, but the fact that the game ran so long actually worked out for me to see the conclusion. I know that this took place 50 years ago so my recollection could be off, but it seemed to me that it lasted more than 3 hours -- I was under the belief that the game lasted until around 8:00 Eastern. Hard to imagine that an extra quarter and a half would only add about a half hour to the game.

A little more on the aftermath: In 1976, as mentioned, Christmas was on a Saturday and the NFL moved everything forward a week to have the Championship games that weekend. As a result, SB XI is the earliest SB date ever at January 9th. In 1977, as mentioned, with Christmas on Sunday, they kept the division playoffs that weekend, playing two on Saturday and two on Monday. To keep one team from having a two day advantage over the other in the championship game, they had both AFC games on Saturday and both NFC games on Monday. The result? The first game on Saturday, Raiders/Colts, was the second game ever to go into double OT, and since both games were on NBC, they received a lot of flack for areas where they switched or didn't switch. Where they switched, fans were upset that they couldn't see the end of a classic. Where they didn't switch, fans were upset about not seeing Steelers/Broncos, as it was Denver's first playoff game. In the NFC, the Monday evening game was Vikings/Rams in the pouring rain. After a two year drought in LA, the rains came in abundance. With the game not played until Monday evening, the three full rain soaked days took its toll on the field, leveling the field of play allowing MN to pull off the upset.

As someone who watched both games live, they were very entertaining games. The Chiefs v Dolphins game went into double overtime and it ruined Christmas dinners? I guess the alternative would have been to call a timeout and stop the game so people can eat their dinners, and then resume after dinner. Get real. But to bitch about the game took too long and we couldn't eat out dinner is asinine. Either make a choice between eating dinner or watching football, or do both at the same time.

I do remember the 1989 Monday night game, , NBC Niners vs. Bills, I believe there was a game on Christmas Day in 2020. But yes, normally if Christmas Day is a Sunday, the NFL plays all the games on Christmas Eve and tries to have most games at 1pm. Thank you for explaining why the NFL avoided Christmas in 1976. That year, the Super Bowl was played January 9, 1977. Now the Regular Season does not even end until then

I think it's one of those things that a certain holiday is owned by a certain sport: basketball owns Christmas, baseball owns the fourth of July, football owns Thanksgiving, motorsports owns Memorial Day Weekend (with Indycar's Indianapolis 500, NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 and the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix), college football owns New Years (with bowl games on New Years Eve and New Years Day) and hockey has managed to join College Football in owning New Years Day with the NHL's Winter Classic being a new and fun tradition

3 games this Christmas Sunday and it could be bad. Packers-Dolphins might be ok. Dolphins are playing for a playoff spot. Rams-Broncos, well, that should be craptacular. Finally the Buccaneers-Cardinals is only interesting because the Bucs are in the playoff hunt because the NFC South is a garbage division this year. It’ll be interesting to see what they do in 2033, the next time Christmas lands on a Sunday. Also, my Grandma loved Hee-Haw.

This was originally posted in Part 2 of this: Actually, as I remember, the old Blue-Gray all-star College Football game was played on Christmas Day a couple of times prior to 1976 (when the Fiesta Bowl went on that day) and was played every year on Christmas Day from 1979-2001 and 2003 after which it ceased to exist. The bigger thing, however, were many cultural changes that happened after 1977 in particular: By the time the NFL played on Christmas Night in 1989, the Catholic Church, which back in 1971 had FAR greater says on how things were done not just with the NFL but in general saw that decline considerably (and much more in the years since). Once the "more pure" version of college football was played on Christmas Day, especially with the Blue-Gray game being played EVERY year on Christmas Day, the Church seemed to give up on being upset about it. Also, even in 1989, the NFL was MUCH bigger as a whole than it was in '71, though even so was STILL NOWHERE NEAR becoming the 800-pound gorilla of sports it is now as baseball was still king. The 1994 baseball strike, one that IMO HAD TO HAPPEN in retrospect because of the legal problems MLB likely would have been facing had it not, is what REALLY catapulted the NFL into the stratosphere it is now (though it was heading that way anyway when FOX paid quadruple what CBS was paying for the NFC package in 1993 which not only launched FOX Sports, but changed the scope of late night as CBS lost MANY affiliates to FOX that either weren't replaced or were by inferior positions on the dial, including in Detroit and was the REAL reason Jay Leno overtook David Letterman in late night, something that could not be fixed even when CBS took the AFC package from NBC after 1997). Another things is as opposed to 1971, we have many people in the US who DO NOT observe Christmas, and in fact for many Christmas Day is just a regular day for them. That too played into that IMO. Also, the NFL has more than a few times since played late afternoon games on Christmas Day, usually with a 4:30 or 5:00 PM start time, even opposite the NBA, which is far more popular now than it was even in the 2000's (LeBron's July 2010 "Decision" was the greatest thing that ever happened to the NBA as its ratings skyrocketed after that). Ironically, I have always believed that the 2011 NBA Lockout ended in time to start the 2011-'12 NBA season on Christmas Day had to do with private pressure on the NBA and the NBA Players Association from the NFL: In 2011, Christmas happened to fall on a Sunday, so the NFL played it's normal Sunday slate of games on Saturday excluding the Sunday Night game which stayed on Christmas Night. While the NFL had that game on Christmas Day, for many who have to mark the holiday alone, what then was the normal NBA Christmas Day doubleheader on ABC (plus a game on ESPN if they had cable) was their only release from an otherwise painful period except when the NFL also happened to have a network game. As negotiations between the NBA and their Players Association had been going nowhere fast, I believe groups that help those in need like this, fearing increases in suicides and the like were privately pressuring Roger Godell to move two of the Christmas Eve games to Christmas Day that would have been played at most likely 1:30 and 5:00 PM ET on Christmas Day with the most likely games moved Broncos-Bills (to CBS with Tim Tebow as an attraction) at 1:30 and Giants-Jets in The Meadowlands at 5:00 PM (as that is essentially a home game for both teams with that game on FOX). While I never heard of any it ever made public, based on my experiences that likely is what happened behind the scenes as from nowhere in mid-November 2011, there suddenly was a settlement around 3:00 AM on a Saturday morning, which suggested Godell privately put pressure on the NBA and NBAPA to get a deal done because the NFL was fearful they were going to have to move two of their games to Christmas Day to sub for the NBA and face backlash from some religious groups over it.
@WaltGekko
@WaltGekko 2 жыл бұрын
Ironically, since writing that the NFL is this year going to have THREE games on Christmas Day, which I suspect may force the NBA to move its Christmas Day slate to the day after Christmas, which because Christmas Day is a Sunday is the actual LEGAL holiday for Christmas day in 2022.

When it's a playoff game on Christmas there's no way to schedule that any more than about 1 week in advance. People start making their Christmas plans months in advance, traveling far away for vacations or visit relatives and friends. Playoff games interfere with this. We don't have this problem on Thanksgiving because Detroit and Dallas always are the home team on Thanksgiving, so people that plan on going to the game can make their travel arrangements ahead of time and it does not interfere with whatever they plan on doing that day. They could play on Christmas, regular season only. Make a new tradition and have one team always be the home team and play every Christmas. The downside now is going up against the NBA.

I was too young to have seen or remembered this game, but always knew of it as the longest game ever played - although it never occurred to me the problems of a game like this on Christmas. The other time slot the NFL avoided for most of its history was nighttime on Christmas Eve. They've had many afternoon games on December 24--including full schedules on Saturdays starting in 1994--but the first night game on Christmas Eve was in 2015, a Thursday nighter between the Chargers and Raiders in Oakland. And the only one to start in prime time local time was in 2016 between the Bengals and Texans in Houston. Both were on NFL Network, and a 2018 Christmas Eve Monday night game between the Broncos and Raiders in Oakland was on ESPN. I don't recall the NBA or NHL ever having games on Christmas Eve, period.

And in 2022, we will have Raiders-Steelers as a Christmas Eve Prime Time game on NFL Network, the first time ever a night game is being played in the Eastern Time Zone on Christmas Eve. I haven't seen the TV ratings numbers for this year's (2021) Christmas Day NFL telecasts. However, I suspect that the two NFL games each drew far more viewers than the NBA games that day. With Christmas next year (2022) being on a Sunday, I think the NFL will wind up with a full slate of Sunday games. I can also see two games on Saturday, December 24th, 2022, the first at 1:05 P.M. EST, and the second game being played in the Pacific time zone between two West Coast teams starting at 4:25 P.M. EST (1:25 PST).

I don't think they will do a full Christmas Day slate. I suspect we will see the full slate on MONDAY (12/26), which is the observed holiday for Christmas when most people have off as opposed to Christmas Eve. I suspect we will have one game Friday night, 1-2 games Saturday (Christmas Eve), the Sunday night game and MAYBE a 4:30 game Christmas day and all other games on Monday.
@WaltGekko

Turned out I was wrong. While I think the NFL would have rather had the bulk of the schedule on Monday 12/26, which would have potentially allowed for a Monday night flex on ESPN, however, I do believe the station managers of FOX affiliates vehemently opposed that because of contracts for weekday syndicated programming that in this case is already scheduled to be pre-empted several times in November and December for World Cup matches with the week of Dec. 26-30 likely re-airs of shows pre-empted by FOX affiliates during the World Cup.

I once read that NBC's lead NFL play-by-play man, Curt Gowdy, was originally assigned to the Miami/Kansas City game, but refused because he wanted to spend Christmas in Boston with his family. So NBC's number two play-by-play man, Jim Simpson, agreed to do the game in Kansas City, and Gowdy instead was assigned the Baltimore/Cleveland game on the 26th. Supposedly, Gowdy took a red-eye flight from Boston to Cleveland late on Christmas night for the next day's game.

Given the success of regular season Monday night NFL games on TV in 1970 and 1971, the league could've avoided this problem by playing three of the four playoff games that weekend on Sunday with 1:05 P.M., 4:05 P.M. and 8:05 P.M. (Eastern time) kick-offs on Sunday, December 26th, and the fourth at 3:05 P.M. Eastern time on Friday, December 24th. By 3 P.M. on Christmas Eve day, most working people (except for retail store workers, who remain at work until 6 or 7 P.M. local time) are home from work. You also mentioned December 26th in1977, 1983, and 1988 (all Mondays) as being workdays. When December 26th is a Monday, most workers (except news media, public safety, first responders, retail workers and restaurant workers) have thst day off. In fact, nowadays, most working people today (except in the industries mentioned above) get the entire week off between Christmas and New Year's Day.

The fact the 26th is the observed holiday for Christmas is why I think in 2022, for the first time the NFL will play Monday 12/26 instead of Saturday 12/24 (save for one or two games) as that Monday is the observed holiday for Christmas in most of the world and in Europe even if not it is Boxing Day, which is also a day off.

Turned out I was wrong, I believe because I forgot because of the World Cup being in November and December, there are going to be several pre-emptions of weekday syndicated programming for said matches and those syndicators likely made Dec. 26-30 a week of re-airs of shows pre-empted for World Cup matches and as a result, the station managers of FOX affiliates objecting to that.

I don't see why 2 NFL games can be played. 1 game can play start 7 or 8 est. Then, play a second on the west coast starting at 8 pst. I would think by that time everything should be done as far as Christmas activities are concerned. No one usually works the next day anyway ( except the black Friday shoppers).

As a population people in the U.S. are a lot less religiously observant than they were 50 years ago. I think day games would do well if Christmas fell on a Sat. or Sun. now.

6:17 that cut was a little jarring. Also, I find it humorous that you chose 15 years as your cutoff point for how many double overtime games there had been, since if you had gone back just one more year you would have doubled that number lol

Heck! They play games, college and pro, on Christmas Eve night and Christmas Day so that whole religion and tradition thing is lost in this day and age.

"Christmas dinners were ruined." I have one thing to say:SO BLEEPIN' WHAT?! I have bad memories of being forced by my mother to help make Christmas dinner, even though there were times when the kitchen sink was broken, or I had to bail water from the basement, or I had to act as caregiver for a dementia-stricken relative. I lived that misery for 31 years! This past Christmas, I heated up a store-bought pizza. I feel better. I needed to get that out of my system. P.S. Bleep Hee Haw.

I LOVE your videos, but I just have one little complaint/suggestion. I found your use of graphs regarding attendance to be somewhat deceiving. Concerning the Vikings game, it appeared to be 95% (!) sold out based on your attendance figures. But by having the bottom part of the graph only slightly below that level, attendance APPEARS to be much worse. The same is true for the KC game. It looks to have been almost 90% sold out. But by having the bottom vertical number for attendance at less than 1000 fans below the number that showed up for the playoff game, it appears upon a quick glance to be an attendance disaster. I am a big stats guy so sorry if this is nitpicking.
