Never understood why my partner was a fan of the torture boys, then I purchased a few audiobooks. I came across a Night Lord torturer who was captured by the Blood Angels during the heresy. He was psychically talking to a little girl who was one of the choir psykers. Some time later, he escapes, comes across her pod and notices she’s been crippled. He asks who did that to her, she eventually told him, and he proceeded to enact justice on the priest. Then “quietly” went back to his cell. I’m now a fan of that Night Lord.

The source of Konrad Curze's brutality ultimately came from the fact that he had zero faith in humanity. I mean he literally did not believe in the goodness of humanity. He didn't think it existed at all. He was once chasing down a particularly crafty criminal and he saw two futures, one where the criminal got away and went on to become a legend for surviving the Night Haunter, going on to become the head of one of the largest criminal syndicates the world had ever seen. But there was another, one in which Konrad captured the man but then spared him and took him under his wing, training him to become the first of enforcers which would go on to help Konrad bring order to Nostromo. Konrad killed the man to make sure the former future would never come to pass. It was also why he ultimately destroyed Nostromo. Because even with perfect peace on the planet, the moment the one enforcing this peace went away, Nostromo went back to its degenerate self. This proved in Konrad's eyes that it was only through fear that humanity could overcome its base desires. Because even when they had everything going for them, without fear, humanity was destined to sink into degeneracy and criminality. To him, humans were sheep to be kept in line through fear, nothing more.

The Emperor has a weird way of finding recruits on Terra. When I heard the origin of the Terran Night Lords recruits, I had a deja vu. The Terran Blood Angel recruits were from the "the lost and dispossessed of Terra". Sounds weird, but I'm sure Big-E had his reasons.

In "Sigismund: The Eternal Crusader" it seems recruits are taken from all over Terra, certain Legions scour certain regions, but in the end all recruits no matter if their sons of nobles, nomads, gangers etc. are taken to processing centers were they are psychological screened and then assigened to legions they would fit best e.g. Sigismund was almost assigned to the XII, but then it was decided to assigne him to the VII. Sigismund always despited the Night Lord, the main reason for that was that he was taken by a Night Lord that frightend the s**t out of him.
@Kareszkoma Жыл бұрын
@@cdev2117 Yes, that is true. It's more so the timeline. The first recruits on Terra were taken from different places. Later on, from everywhere, and than often from the Primarchs planet. For example. Look up the Blood Angel Legion, the Revenant legion on the lexicanum. There is a line: "..as the early IXth Legion recruited from the lost and dispossessed of Terra.." The early. The foundation. They were also used to hold the line, as they were especially murderous. Which is an interesting combination of how that came to be. Also, it's not a one time thing: "..On the moons of Neptune, 12,000 warriors of the IXth disappeared but nonetheless managed to endure and complete their mission. They had largely replenished their numbers taken from the barely human dregs of Neptune's tunnels. .." And: "..They became spectres that haunted the wild places of the Great Crusade, the terrors loosed by the Emperor to clear his path across the stars. .." The early history of the Legions are quite interesting. Why did they favor recruits like that? Why have the initiates became like that after the implantation. There is more lore about the Revenant Legion. In one, they were recruiting from people who were mutated, corrupted or disfigured by the warp. Their geneseed being super resilient, healed these people, and turned them into how Blood Angels tend to look like. Why? How? I find it interesting.

Night Lords haven't really seen any love in a *very* long time. They were briefly centre stage back at the tail end of 3rd edition when they were highlighted in a series of White Dwarf articles and were the poster child for the City Fight game mode. As well as getting a lore story and subsequent materials. Games Workshop had a WD editor working there at the time who loved Night Lords and had enough sway at the company to get them featured a lot. After he left GW, Night Lords quickly faded from GW's attention to the point where they have got little to no content, models or basically anything for 20 years now.

@@GloriousGrunt I was told by an ex-GW regional recruitment manager the other day that she wouldn't be surprised if the accessories upgrade kits you can buy from GW for Night Lords are just left over stock from 20 years ago still sitting around gathering dust in the warehouse. If they're white metal, it is definitely the 20 year old stock, should check the metal tags, they have the cast date on them. Those, along with Catachans are still some of the only metal model kits GW still sells. (mainly because they made a lot more than they should of expecting them to sell well but none of them did and they're still sitting on hundreds of boxes 20 years old I'm told). If you order something online from Games Workshop, either from their tiny catalogue on their webstore, or their complete listings on Ebay and it comes in a White box with Warhammer on it and an Aquila with nothing else, it's new old stock from decades ago they've just been sitting on waiting to get rid of. I assure you GW doesn't throw anything away, they try to sell anything they can, which is why they have an Ebay account. The only stuff they don't keep, is anything that has had it's models or parts updated at any point. Older stuff either gets dumped to landfill or (more commonly than not) somehow ends up being thrown into a storage garage and left forgotten. I remember someone telling me once when they went to a blind storage auction in Sydney Australia as the owner had stopped paying the rent and they opened it, they found it and I am not kidding or paraphrasing here, top to bottom filled with 2nd edition Warhammer 40 000 boxes and boosters. Someone from Games Workshop AU/NZ just started dumping the remainder of GW's entire Oceanic inventory from when they started phasing it out in 1999, into that one storage garage at some random storage place in north Sydney and it had been sitting there for over a decade (I had this conversation in 2014); Whoever did it, simply stopped paying the rent on it, so their stuff went up for auction. He won it and told me he's been selling it all online. This was 8 years ago so it's likely all gone now. The vast majority of it was 2nd edition starter boxes I'm told.

IMO Alpha Legion would arguably be a much better candidate to be described as "black ops" - conducting almost every mission in total secrecy, using assymetrical warfare tactics to destroy the enemy without sustaining casualties, utilising covert operatives, adopting whatever tactics and equipment necessary to suit situations and opponents, operating with complete focus on the mission and remaining pragmatic no matter the circumstances. Even the Iron Warriors would be better candidates than Night Lords as their whole modus operandi is ruthless efficiency and they have a very calculating mindset that would serve any special forces operator very well. Of all the Legions, Iron Warriors seem to be the most like real-world soldiers in that to them war is simply an equation to be solved by the economical application of firepower and brute force rather than a matter of honour, ideals or personal glory. Night Lords are more like Batman, The Joker and Colonel Kurtz from Apocalypse Now combined (in fact, Colonel Kurtz and Apocalypse Now are referenced many times in NL background, not least of all with Konrad Kurze's name). They have some effective tactics and when they're motivated they're highly dangerous, but they're far too petty, divided and emotional to have anything like the utterly focussed, tactical and pragmatic mindset of special forces operators. Not trying to discredit your opinion though, only contributing my own. I'm glad you're enjoying reading about the legions. Iron Within, Iron Without!

Yes broadcasting a live feed of you skinning the planetary governor 24/7 until the planet surrenders is brutal but it’s better than killing millions of people and ruining half the environment in a 40k war. They were a deterrent, giving people the opportunity to avoid bloodshed. Rebel planets would surrender when they heard Night Lords were coming. That’s as merciful as it gets in this setting. Also side note: The parade scene on Nostramo is one of my favourite scenes of any 40k novel. “That was your mother.” Edit: I wrote this before watching most of the video and now realize I just repeated most of the same points, my bad.

Yes!!! "The Night Lords Omnibus" is why they are the best... read it... it will explain everything... Talos and his "progenitor" are the coolest thing going... GW really needs to expand what his progeny does with himself, I would love to see a continuation specifically focused on his "child"... What I think we only get a page or two of meeting him... also, shout outs on how well they explain some Pre-PTSD Psycopaths... meaning all these guys were already crazy and just made it worse... then they ended up with the Gene-seed of a true Paranoid Schizo with an extreme level of wisdom that surpassed his emotional tolerance... Konrad had a circular curse of being crazy but smart, and driving himself even crazier as time progressed....

You can see why he'd seek counsel with Dorn, who outwardly seems incredibly level headed and sensible, but then you remember the screaming, raging autists of the Black Templars are just as much a reflection of Dorn as the banana men, so it's not a shock that Dorn spazzed out and made everything 1000% worse.

Yeah, it's one of those things in the NL trilogy that often gets overlooked is that a lot of the portrayal of the Night Lords is distorted thanks to Talos' POV. What MK is talking about in the vid is a lot closer to 'how Marines like Talos see the Legion' rather than 'how the Legion is'. Plus even Talos acknowledges in the first book that the most powerful known warband of the VIII is that of Kreig Acerbus (antagonist from the older 'Lord of the Night' book), a Night Lord Daemon Prince firmly on the 'sadistic, flay them for the jollies' side of the Legion.

Everytime he saw someone worse than the imperium he would completely ignore advisors To lead a head on assault To liberate and give the populace that sweet taste of vengance he never got.
