@@abrahamdsl Yea it is a sad state of the nation. Crony capitalism has long existed in the Philippines since its independence. But the 1986 Philippine Constitution was the final nail to transfer the economic powers of the country to the few supra elite families, oligarchs and mega corporations, which seems to me the Philippine 1986 Constitution seems like written by corporate lawyers and not legislators.

The problem with Philippine capitalism is that there is a concealed monopoly. Many Filipino politicians come from political clans that happen to own family businesses/corporations or are business investors. These "politicians" are passing and enforcing regulations that make it difficult for foreign investors to start businesses and SMEs to develop and grow, particularly if their business competes with the politician's family interests. Another is the Mafia-style extortion by corrupt politicians. When they learn about a new investor establishing operations in the country or see an expanding company or corporation, these corrupt politicians asks for major shares of the company rather than money. This is why many of them became "investors". During the time when the Philippines was still looking for a foreign telecom company to invest in the country in order to end the PLDT and Globe duopoly and improve the country's internet service. A gossip circulated among Filipino stock traders about an Australian-based telecom company that expressed interest and began setting up an office in the Philippines. A former cabinet member approached the Australian company and asked for millions of dollars to act as an agent to the government in order to secure the third telecom franchise. Eventually, they fled the country in disgust.

Philippines economy is much closer to a socialist economy than a capitalist one. It has many of the hallmarks of socialism: price control, heavy regulation of commodities like sugar and rice, high taxation on wealth creators and redistributes them to sectors like senior citizens and the "indigents", high minimum wage...and the government is not really democratic because you only get to choose from 200 families.

The Philippine has a huge potential with a smart, highly talented and hard working population plus lots of geographic advantages. The main barrier is indeed the challenging social structure as identified by the world bank. A highly disruptive existential crisis like what Ukraine is experiencing might have potential to become a force for positive growth but, of course, is very expensive!

Succinctly! Thanks for sharing. Everything about the Philippines' governance today is a result of foreign conquest of the country (The Philippines), one the legacy given to filipinos and be it rich, middle class or poor is "Cronism", and since filipinos who were descendants of these foreign invaders wanted a piece of this country, that legacy were transferred to their off springs and well into the generations thats comes after.... Unfortunately, this trait is now ingrained in the mindsets of well-to-do filipinos, the elites, and Politicians.. and so hypocrisy amongts them is somewhat 2nd nature to them, because its be3n normalised by themselves!
