India was one of the wealthiest regions of the world during pre-colonial Mughal rule because the land was fertile, the population was high, and industrialization didn't exist yet. These so-called GDP estimates are based purely on its capacity for agricultural production. Doesn't anyone remember that 95% of the pre-1800 population consisted of farmers?
@arthas6404 ай бұрын
Yeah, that was a time when your economy was almost entirely dependent on agricultural output and India's was so great purely thanks to geography rather then policy or anything like that. Their economy was actually pretty inefficient really, when the British started the industrial revolution textiles were some of the first things they industrialized and in a matter of a couple decades they were able to out produce India to the point some previous textiles India had once monopolized were being produced by England in larger quantities using a handful of unskilled laborers and a couple factories while India was producing less with an army of craftsmen that needed a lifetime to train. India was if anything more advanced then England for centuries but rapidly fell behind in large part because of over reliance on agriculture and over reliance on cheap labor: as mentioned in the video why would they invest in expensive machinery when you can just hire a hundred laborers for less? China had similar problems, at one point there were Chinese filmmakers who would hire people to stand around holding lights because it was cheaper then renting an expensive opposable light stand.

Nearly 80 years later and they've all catapulted themselves into first world nations and India still struggles with the caste system, large parts of the country look the same way they did a century ago, and even the more developed areas are more like Victorian Europe then a modern Asian country where you'll find rag pickers, child laborers, and people pooping in public within walking distance of modern office buildings.

The irony of Indian social system for centuries has been, that Power, Money and Knowledge should exist only with the few not the masses. The British exploited this system very well to their advantage. Although the buying power of people of India is much better compared to the past, but still even today there are a handful number of crony capitalists who control everything in India. As a result corruption levels in India are one of the highest in the world.
@varun22503 жыл бұрын
Systemic Corruption existed in India pre-1990's and 1980's and even in those time it was one of the highest in the world. In those times, India was pretty much totally Socialistic with Government owned companies controlling more than 70% of all big industries and businesses. Crony Capitalism or Crony Socialism, both show their adverse effects on Common people. Let's take a balanced approach here.

@FOLIPE3 жыл бұрын
@@fantasyfleet Free trade was not free trade. There was not only a policy of trade restriction (restricting trade with the rest of the world for many goods), but generally the central government's policy favored the industrialization of Britain both through direct incentives and indirect investments and the de-industrialization of the colonies in a similar vein. This produced a system of hierarchy and specialization which can then continue on more or less unchanged even if unenforced just by inaction, given the high costs of changing it. Roads, Education, Lifestyle, Cleanliness everything, compared to it's Northern Part, where Corruption is at peak. For eg: You get a driving licence without a driving test in Northern India, but in South you have to pass a proper driving test to get a licence. Such things create a difference in economy and general well being too. The sooner corrupt practices in the country start to lessen, sooner development will start to rise significantly, and at ease.

@@vivekvs9678 actually, you're half right. Your points 2,4, and the last one are reasons. Its not really the money the British looted from India..its the mindset that was hammered into the very first politicians by them. The first few politicians of free India were very influenced by the British. They picked up the model of exploitation directly from them. You may not know this, but the education system of India is actually designed by the British to enslave India. While China, Korea, etc. changed their education systems, *India did not*. This is the biggest problem in our development. Now enough blaming the British, look into ourselves. We are masochistic by nature. We've turned politicians into heroes. Political parties use freedom fighters who died 150 years ago as symbols. *This hero worship is another reason*. Another problem is democracy. This may be controversial but hear me out. Out of the countries you mentioned, *China and Korea are both authoritarian*, while Japan has a rigid societal system that makes its society one of the most disciplined in the world. *India's democracy is not like the West.* Remember, Democracy is a western system. It's designed for western society. India was at it's best when the Gupta Kings ruled. Todays Indian "democracy" is just a fake thing that exists to fill politicians pockets. Hence I believe that a very educated person, preferably with a modern outlook, should rule India as a authoritarian for 25-30 years. To quote the man who made Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew : *With a few exceptions, western democracy has provided no benefit to Asia.* Remember, this is the guy who advised China when it was poor.

I am from India but living in the West. I grew up in India and lived until late sixties. India started correctly by industrializing and stll continues with the same foundations laid by Nehru and Shashtry. The later prime ministers ought to have modified the approach as the population was growing and should have allowed far more innovation by opening up the country for more imports and exports rather than insulating India from external influences. The second prom with India is the randomized thinking of the population which is not conducive for fatster industrialization. People confuse freedom with chaos. A chaotic thinking will not lead to progress. Western countries have democracy but not anarchy and the laws are stricktly enforced which are a complete failure in India. Next one is massive corruption - all checks and balances fail. Indians live in the past ( ancient times ) but science and technology is not emphasized in education and policies. It is the industrial revolution which has allowed the West and East Asian countries to leap forward whereas Indians continue to live in ancient times.

You are just seeing the whole scenario from one side. No other country except India was a slave for 1000 years. Moreover, we have started just 75 years ago then also we are at a particular level. You said we are faild to introduce technology in our education. But you are forgetting the fact the India is the largest exporter of doctors in the world. We are the largest creator of CEOs in the world. More than 36% scientists at NASA are Indiana. More than 34% engineers at Microsoft are indians. Thailand is famous for sex tourism and India is famous for medical tourism. We have seen the great people like aryabhatta in the ancient times who intensively studied the universe without technology. While they used to study in Gurukuls, there were no any technology but then also he gave 0 to the world. And this 0 is the foundation of the modern technology. We are the fastest growing economy (as per the recent data released). Our rate of adding unicorns is far more the other countries. Indian companies are the largest job creators in UK. And if all the Indian companies will fire all the British employees in Britain then there will start a civil war in the country and they will be collapsed. 17 of the 20 fastest growing cities of the world are from India only. There are many other things in which India is domaniting today. And probably u don't know the ground reality of the so called developed western nations that's why you are talking like this. Like any other country of the world India has also many problems. And we are dealing with it. We are focused on growth. By 2025 India will become the third richest country ( at present we r 5th richest country). And by 2050 India will become the 2nd richest country of the world leaving USA behind.

@@atishsingh8729 Thanks for your views. When you talk about Indians are CEOs of leading companies in the world - but those companies are not in India. Those countries have used technology and that is why their per capita income is far higher than India's. It is the affluent of India who give such examples. Just look at the mass poverty in India. Whose responsibilities are there for their pathetic condition? There were Maharajas in British India who were among the richest in the world but masses did not have enough food to eat nor had health facilities. India is just about at the bottom (among bottom 20 ) of all countries based on per capita income. When the population is vast then obviously the total GDP will be high. India's GDP ( total ) does not give true picture of how Indians live. India's checks and balancrs have completely collapsed and so have educational and scientific education systems. In the free trade snvironment - it is the survival of the fittest. It is the lack of quality which is pushing the country down. Just look at the unemployment condition amongst the youth. Leaders do not talk about them. Regarding Aryabhatta, he was brilliant and living in an era when there was no industrial revolution which creates wealth. India has missed the industrial revolution and is headed backwards after the end of Nehru- Shashtry era when India went through rapid industrialization. By giving selective staistics - it will not eradicate poverty and failed democracy. Thanks

Similarly we are also working and have already started in this direction. And economy is not the only factor. Many say Indians are rapists but they just see the numbers and not the %. People say that tourists are scamed in india but they just talk on the basis of their imagination without knowing the reality. They do not read the reports. The number of tourists scamming people in India is nearly 2 times the number of tourists scammed in india. And you are repeatedly talking about Nehru (Since u are an India i am discussing it with u because u are like my grandfather). But i don't know what Nehru has done? Nehru was the 100% reason behind our defeat in 1962 war. Nehru is the reason why china has veto power today(instead of India). Nehru is the reason why coco island is not with us today. Nehru failed to take the strong decisions. At the same time i know the condition of India at the time of Nehru. We were afraid at that time. Please forgive me for my faults, if any. Jai hind...

@@atishsingh8729 Dear Mr Singh: The life of my generation IA about over now but I am writing all of this for your generation -especially the future of the generation that is coming up to-day whether those coming from not so well off families. You have expressed on the following topics: 1. New Industries in the West like Google, Microsoft etc. which came up in the nineteen eighties, (2) Tourism and Rape of Tourists in India, (3) Unemployment of present day youth in India, (4) Interest Rate in India, (5) Nehru’s Policies and India in his time . Let us take these points one at a time. (1) New Industries in the West - India had vast availability of software people in its universities, and Indian tradition towards education. You have also mentioned about Aryabhatta I. India should have taken lead in the world in opening these types of industries. There was no other country in the world in India’s position. India lost out and Indians did not start these industries in spite of having competent people who went out and became top leaders of such companies in other countries. Indians fail when it comes to organizing - they succeed on individual basis as these top leaders of Google, Microsoft etc are demonstrating. Indians prove their worth not living in India but after going away. When it comes to organizing, Md Ghazni with a handful of his army invaded India 18 times and plundered India where the population was several times his but the Indians lost out decisively. It is better to accept the weaknesses of Indians and rectify it rather than living in false hopes. (2) Tourism and Rape - I do not believe India has more crime than USA. I can walk freely in India in day time in any city of India but not in USA. (3) Unemployment of present day youth in India - Nehru did emphasize population control which at the time of indepensdence was 35 crore in India and which is 4 times now in 75 years. The expectation of Indians is far more than 4 times. I have done studies on per capita real (after correction for inflation) GDP increase. It is not all that fantastic whereas you see for China and other countries like Japan which was totally bombed out when India got independence or Korea, Nationalist China or other Western European Countries - it is to be noted that many of these countries have higher population density than India’s. Why they have succeeded whereas India which was not even bombed out? The reason is dishonesty, lack of discipline, and not realizing importance of science and industrialization. In a nut shell, if India does not industrialize and be a top notch country in innovation, research, have honesty, and discipline - there is no hope that youth of future generation living in India will find meaningful employment. Indians have to be more productive with high quality products at less cost to succeed in to-day’s world. (4) Interest Rate in India, High interest rate is a symptom of stagnant economy. India is a low wage country still its economic output does not compete in the free market. Japan has stagflation - has reached the maximum with its wages and resources which are hardly any. Japan and Britain maintain their living standards because of them being very productive (5) Nehru’s Policies and India in his time. Nehru was taking finesse with the Chinese and failed. Nehru wanted use resources in development work and not spending substantial amount on the military. As in the game of bridge - it failed miserably. However, India made rapid progress in industrialization based on the resources that it had. You are yourself writing that India was ahead of China in Nehru Era in economic terms. With rapid industrialization - youth had good employment opportunities. There was no visible corruption in the system and far better law and order in the country. In the present India - large number of MLAs and MPs have serious criminal records, massive corruption, and the courts are swamped with number of cases with the result that criminals could not have better time than this - criminals and cheats are flourishing. (6) This is called the change of times between the Nehru Era and now.

Victims of abuse often end up becoming like their abusers. This was the case in India. The post-colonial leaders who still remembered British rule were so afraid of Western influence that they stifled our industries and our economy worse than the British ever did. India's economy opened up in the late 1980s and the 1990s as the post-colonial generation began dying off or retiring. As as that generation has lesser and lesser influence on Indian politics,our economy opens up more and more.

Tge Brits ended many abuses that the Indians were inflicting on each other. When the Brits left, the Indian elite went right back to the same behavior.
@najmaalikhan2 жыл бұрын
They were not victim of abuse , India was a thriving prosperous country during Mughal rule. Muslim ruled India as their own, unlike the British who kept aloof and looked down on them. After succeeded in their divide rule agenda, they broke up the unity of India, whereby conquered it, then as usual slithered away leaving people in India to pick up the pieces.

Complete wrong analysis, post colonial leaders didn't not stifle economy industry for the reasons your giving, the devastating destruction of India left by the wars and its destruction of its political factions was so great that India has not been able to recover totally from it.

Why is India poor? 1. We breed as if there is no tomorrow.... 2. We practice corruption as if we are preparing for olympics and corruption is one of the sports in it... 3. We take benefits of reservation even if we have risen far far above that strata of population for which reservation was started... 4. We can not be fired from our govt jobs, even if we literally don't show up for work for weeks and months.. 5. We don't have any civic sense and don't bat an eyelid before destroying public infrastructure whenever it tickles our fancy... 6. We have no problem with criminal politicians as long as they are from a party we like, and we hate even a good politician if they are from a party we don't like...
