I have to point out that the sustainpedal on a piano allows you to play many more notes that you have fingers. Not at once, but all the notes vibrate together and create harmony. If you do a fast arpeggio or a melody while holding down the pedal, even though that you have moved your hand, all the strings will still vibrate meaning that much more than 10 string will vibrate at once. If we compare this to for example a violin, as soon as you play another note, the note that you where playing before stops. A guitar has the same feature as a piano, however only 6 string can vibrate at once on a guitar. A piano can have 88 strings vibrating a once. I also think piano is the most expressive instrument there is, since every new way of voicing a chord is a new emotion. SO lets do some math in order to show how many possible chords you can play on piano: There are 2^88 distinct subsets of any 88 things. You probably don’t want the empty combination so that makes 2^88−1=309485009821345068724781055. If you don’t want to count single notes as ‘combinations’, we can subtract the 88 of those to get: 309485009821345068724780967. As you can see the piano has endless notecombinations and therefore endless emotions to express. Simply no other instrument are capable of doing anything near this, except the organ of course.

I started on the piano many years ago, and even though I have learned to play a wide range of instruments now (guitar, bouzouki, ukulele, recorder, tin whistle, melodica, kalimba, ocarina, concert flute and many percussion instruments etc.)...nothing beats the piano for me. ♥️

Lol, well I play 23 acoustic instruments myself since I am a crazy addicted musician and music maker. Now as a composer piano/keys is still king. Plucked strings like guitar are by far best for rhythmic playing styles, riffs etc. But I also have a huge passion for continuous expression instruments, meaning instruments you can shape the curve of dynamics and vibrato over time. In short: all wind and bowed string instruments. And btw, I count vocals as a "wind instrument", because it is really. =)

Totally agree ... even if you're (for example) wiriting a symphony for a whole orchestra that doesn't include a piano in the end perfomance, the piano is so poweful for sketching the entire score for the reasons you outline. Even for electronic music, the piano for the can be used for the same purpose. And as a instrumental voice in its own right, it possesses a timbre that is both awesome and unmatched.

I totally agree. And by the way, it is on the Piano that more of all musical works are written, than on all other instruments. The Piano has endless possibilities, due to the fact that it has 88 keys, which, if you start combining, linking each other in all possible combinations, options, then there will be endless possibilities.

I play other instruments but piano trumps them for sure when it comes to composing. It doesent mean that the other instrunents does not have their own merrits though. Guitar is so expressive and fun to play 😊

Regarding expression I have to disagree in some way with the detractors of piano expression capability. It's true, it has no way to make articulations like other orchestral instruments, but it has a really powerful ace up its sleeve.Every key has 3 strings and Its harmonic resonance plate and the body of the instrument react in different ways, depending on how much soft or loud you play the keys and the harmonics generated from every single string of every note you play meld with the others notes harmonics giving you an endless palette of sounds. That's the expression superpower of the piano!

As a lifelong musician whose formal study was guitar, I have fallen in love with the piano all over again (being inspired by my piano hero Lyle Mays helped). Without question the voicings, colors, arpeggios, and dynamics possible on piano exceed all other instruments. And for composing, starting on piano is a no-brainer. Thanks also to you, Mikael. I'll disagree just to shake things up, plus as a classical guitarist I sort of have to 😂 the piano is great, extremely versatile and can do a lot more than a lot of other instruments. However, everybody KNOWS the guitar is the best instrument there is (no I don't mean super simple rock patterns or your amateur beginner guitarist friend playing a song with 3 chords...). The guitar has pretty much most of the qualities of the piano with infinitely more colors and timbral possibilities. Of course there are limitations to many technical things that are so much easier on the piano, but all in all guitar is the winner. Sorry 😂 That said, there are things where the piano shines and one of them is the ease of playing many different complex things. For example Bach's chaconne. The original on violin is beautiful with the scales, though the big chords and polyphony are usually a bit cringy. On guitar the chords are amazing and dramatic, but the scales can't match the violin in speed and expressivity. Listen to Jean Rondeau's version on harpsichord however, and you'll never want to hear it on violin or guitar again. Still, guitar is best ✌️

Yes, I know what you mean. If you start with a piano in the track (which I also do almost every time) it can truly become like the "perfect glue" that holds the music together...and if you remove it, it suddenly feels empty. =)
