I was born in 2001 so the current version of the ride is what i’m used to. I think I rode it a few times before the 2006 refurbishment but I obviously don’t remember it since I was a little kid.

seeing you roast this refurb was very cathartic for me as someone who’s eternally angry that I never got to experience the pure un-messed with version.

As a fan of the movies, I enjoy seeing the stuff from the movies on the ride. That being said, I think I like the original version of the story and ride more. It was more classic Pirates than "Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean". It was like you were seeing all of that old pirate artwork come to life. It had an old school charm to it.

I honestly avoided "Pirates of the Caribbean", during my last two trips to Disneyland in 2019 and 2020. I grew up in Southern California, and had gone on the attraction from the year it opened. It was once my favorite attraction after the Haunted Mansion. My father came from El Salvador, and it was definitely his favorite attraction in the park. I just can't deal with the idea the Caribbean sea side village would put everyone there at risk to protect Jack Sparrow.

In Paris Disneyland, when going up, leaving the ride, you could see three pirates hoisting up treasure wrapped in a Jolly Roger, struggling. Then, when we did the timeride, we passed three skeletons with the decayed flag, and obviously they stabbed and killed each other. Powerful scenery.

As someone who has always loved the 2006 Haunted Mansion refurb specifically for its delightful-but-contained inclusion of a bat-s*** crazy villain in Constance Hatchaway, but who has also come to LOATHE the poorly thought-out POTC refurb with its unnecessary shoehorning in of the already overused Jack Sparrow, I feel so so very vindicated right now. 😂 Excellent analysis and I agree with each of your points 100%.

You make a good point about the art style If they stylize Jack and Barbie’s it would work better They did the same thing with the Pirates of the Caribbean portion of Kingdom Hearts I really didn’t like the way it looked But yeah I didn’t pay the refurb much mind because it didn’t change much. And I guess that’s the problem Jack and all the pirates pursuing changed it enough to make it awkward and even dated given that it IS a film franchise based on a theme park attraction. It’s not like it was a movie first that the ride was based on. On a side note it is sketchy that Jack , our hero, is just chilling while women are being auctioned off to do god knows what with And finally Constance Hatchaway: the problem with Constance is the base they projected her on looked oblong Leota is partially obscured by the crystal ball and therefore any flaws in the projection are as well.

Problem is the whole timeless pirate tale is reduced to dated pop culture characters. Outside the US, POTC never had that big a fanbase. Movies were successful, but by now are pretty forgotten in comparison to the enduring success of HP or LOTR. The ride was appealing for its originality and uncertain, hence creative lore.

Well, I did enjoy the changes at the time, but I hadn't ever thought of any of the points you brought up until now. Honestly, the only change I can think of, that I actually still like, is how they made the fort defenders grow some backbones and shout back at Barbossa in defiance.

I absolutely am not a fan of the movie additions to the ride and would definitely prefer if they were gone entirely I also had never thought about the connotations of the infamous auction scene WITH the context of Jack in the ride and...yeah, oof that's pretty bad....

tionI don't mean to be picky, but the ship Barbossa is captain of in the attraction is not called "The Jolly Roger". It's called "The Wicked Wench".

In the future i feel and hopefully with BETTER insight. That they just get rid of the movie elements entirely plus the fact that Johnny Depp is more infamous now for just sueing people in court. Not a good idea to keep remaining the public that the life like figure of Depp has been in the PIRATES rides for years now. And that they should get rid of the movie elements years ago once the movie themselves fell out of favor with the public, yes Disney did try make Sparrow even more of a thing by having a bizarre short lived screen show of him at Disney MGM. But basically didn't last long at all. Now Jack Sparrow seems more of a park character to a movie series a basic newer generation of kids have NO idea of....plus Depp's overall bad press recently. It sours the character even more and then there's.....FANTASMIC Oh god why the hell did DISNEY make everything within that scene so dark and its basic Jack and random female yelling out there lines to each other. Its sooo awful that its like current Disney is saying "Yes we know love Jack but let's put him into this godawful scene in the show and lets have everyone hate it with a passion!!!" Basically if that reboot movie with the Redhead is still being made, I say just once and fore all get rid of the Jack Sparrows, Barbossa on the ship, the movie treasure, the remaining warning from movie Davy Jones..... And make PIRATES back into the old ride it was before Depp's ego ruined it
