‘Technically’ it started 1999 with pocket station, it was a Japanese exclusive console that had a small 1.5 inch lcd screen that could play games, it also was a memory card for ps1/2. It was discontinued in 2002 after selling approximately 5 million units

Their so much more then not doing good with system sales. The main issue with the psp was the back doors which allowed for custom firmware meaning people didn’t have to pay for anything and this was actually a huge issue Sony tried to fix. Sony didn’t get a handle of the issue until the vita was made and even then Sony didn’t market the vita well and then it people were able to put custom firmware on it again. Their ever shrinking problem of game developers coming to their system never got fixed. The psp 3000 you just needed a memory card and you can take the stuff on and off of the system like nothing. The main issues were basically they couldn’t get ahold of their system hackers ran rampant on multiplayer games it was bad. I mean I should know because I’m a coder and anything I wanted to mod in a game I could do if it was in the game. Killzone liberation you could actually port the whole co-op online.

The PlayStation Portable was amazing, way ahead of its time, Sony deserves so much more credit. They should re-release a modern PSP with the best mobile GPU hardware, it could be a standalone console like the switch. Make a huge library of backwards compatible games, PSP, PS2, PS3, PS4 games available on the system as well.
