I have used a similar method to this with great success. I figure that watering every day is to be avoided and so capillary watering is the answer, but I felt that feeding should be in my control, so I use an inert matrix to plant in and put soluble fertiliser in the water at the start. Later (e.g. when tomato trusses have formed) I feed from the top also with liquid fertiliser. Works very well. As I said, this capillary way of watering is maintenance free, but I use a solid top with holes in... Prevents excessive evaporation and prevents mosquitoes.

Today Oct 21, 2016. Harvested some Tomatoes and Bell Peppers today. Just a few left then I will feed the plants to the compost pile. We live near Fredericksburg, TX. I switched to the kiddy pool Walmart bag stem for my fall veggies and some 5 gal buckets. Like the air pruning pool system better. Gonna start building my rain gutter system next week to get ready for planting in very early March. This video has me even more excited to get it going. Thanks, and you always do a great job Larry.

We've got too many skeeters in Florida to have any standing water like that. That's why I'm exploring a modified wicking bed system using kiddie pools, french drain, and sand as a subirrigation station where I can just set down cloth grow bags filled with a soilless potting mix as described here. Very similar in concept. I'm looking forward to it.

Same here. No open water containers because of mosquitoes. I'm planning to do something similar to this with downspout instead of open gutter, with holes drilled for the water access for each plant. Avoids having the exposed parts of the gutter for mosquitoes.

The white buckets last maybe two or three years (where I live in Alabama) before they deteriorate in the sun. Black buckets last much longer. They contain carbon black which increases the U.V. resistance of the plastic. Results may vary by how close you are to the equator. Some plants don't do well in five gallon buckets because they need more surface area for their roots to have access to aerated soil near the surface. Wal-Mart bags (as shown in the video) are a cheap alternative. They only last two or three years where I live in the deep south, but as they only cost 50 cents each, that's an affordable loss. An additional advantage to Wal-Mart bags is that their porosity gives them a much greater effective surface areas for roots as air can penetrate the sides of the bags. So for plants that have to have a larger area to grow, Wal-Mart bags (or Target or Costco . . . whatever) will often do the job where a five gallon bucket will not. My own personal experience is that beans and squash don't do well in five gallon buckets for this reason. Store bags hold a surprising amount of potting mix. Wal-Mart also sells large, black storage containers with lids (which I don't use) for $5. I've been experimenting with these but it's too soon to tell how well they hold up in the sun.
@dawnt6791

We have that issue here. The Arizona sun destroys many plastics in very short order, so thanks for the tip about black vs white buckets! Also, the tip on the Walmart bags. I never even thought of using those!

out here in Arizona you must add vermiculite to the potting mix, potting mix alone isn't enough for the cappilary action due to the dry weather. Otherwise works like a dream.

i built one back in 2010 and over 6 or 7 years it just got bigger and bigger until the last season i grew it and it became such a thick jungle it took me months to clear it our after it finally collapsed. 10 rows 9 buckets each, cherry tomatoes, grew up the string to about 8 feet then grew back down and suckers everywhere. whew, took lots of patience to clear it up after the freeze wiped them out and they sat until spring. i think i mastered it except for building a tulle enclosure (wedding veil fabric) around the whole place from those blasted leaf footed bugs. its been years since i last did it, after watching a lot of vids today im inspired, time to revisit it again!

I've developed my own version of this with one change. In the base of my container I cut a round hole about 2 inches across. I then insert some felt that you can get off Amazon etc. The felt used for craft use and every 5 year old making costumes. The sheets I got were about 12 inches square and came in an assortment of colours. Once the felt is inserted through the hole I then force it down about 2-3 inches (this will be dipping into the drain gutter) then fill it with compost to achieve the same capillary action described in the video. Make sure there are no air pockets as this will make it less effective. I even re-use the felt the following year. One tip I would like to pass on. If in a greenhouse make sure you cover the exposed areas between the pots to stop excessive algae growth and to limit the amount of fly larvae that will appear. During the year of my first attempt my water turned a very dark dark green for a few weeks then cleared again but I had hundreds of 'midgies' flying around my greenhouse.

THIS IS THE BEST! I built one (3 - 20 foot lengths in a "E" shape at a rental house I occupied. Then in the chaos of the next year when I bought my house I just stuck my plants in the dirt..... never again! I grow tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, pole beans stuck in shared pots and basil at base of every tomato plant successfully in the gutter system. My peas did not like it...but the loss was soon forgotten big time! Companion planting is great. This year will set up again, and also will try pumpkin and other squash, more lettuce and also flowers. Also I fill a 50 gal barrel about once every 3 days at peak summer and use that as my resivoir. Running dry for a day won't kill anything either.

Built your system 2 years ago. Live in central Fla. Amazing amount of produce. Fed all the neighbors . best part the following year I had fruit growing again from last year's roots. The soil is literally good for 2 years. No rain all winter so I'm guessing the morning dew started the growing process. I also have the Dutch bucket system using master blend. The gutter soil mixture keeps up with the master blend in the grow time processes. The wick system is nice but the soil mixture is key to the whole build in my opinion. Thx Larry

Hey first year container gardener this year. I grew up eating my dads garden. And with his ALZ he can't do it. So this year I was going to just plant 1 tomato plant in a hanger and stumbled into container gardening on accident. 5 tomato plants, one cherry tomato, 3 cucumbers and 1 pepper. So far so good. Looking to do it better next year. Your videos and others have been a big help. Thank you. Will probably do a rain gutter for my mom for everything and a smaller one for my small containers and a 2 bucket system for my 5 gallon buckets. I'm in an apartment so far and the buckets will be easier to store. Again you and others on you tube rock and thanks again.
