SC doesn't even look at the race standings anymore, just assume Verstappen is leading.

The gap at race speed was 11s, but at the VSC/SC 60% delta speed it’s 18s (11/60% = 18) You can see this gap increase to 18s before max can even see the safety car, so even if the safety car let Max through then Lando still would have had time for a free pit. Great vid 👍

Does lando have to slowdown at VSC ? How can he increase the gap with others ?

@@vuhiep8796 whenever there is a SC/VSC all drivers have to slow down to on average 60% the race speed, this is called the delta, it’s closely measured and it shows on the steering wheel how far a head or behind this delta you are, all drivers try and stick to this delta so that it maintains the same gaps between each driver. The delta ensures the average lap distance between 2 drivers stays the same. Because the average gap stays the same, and the speed decreases, the time must increase. It happens every time they slow to this delta, the gap between every single driver in the track suddenly increases. When it’s a VSC and the VSC ends the gap in seconds suddenly decreases back to the gap it was at race speed. Go back to any race and watch the live timings increase as soon as a VSC/SC is thrown. Think of it this way… Forget the safety car, if Lando instantly stopped, it would take Max 11s to catch him at race speed, but at 60% race speed it would take 18s. Hope that helps.

​​@@vuhiep8796it will naturally increase. When Lando slows down, the distance between Lando and Max doesnt change because they're travelling on the same speed, but because they are doing slower speed, the time gap between them will definitely increase

@@misonice5683 the delta speed they have to follow when a SC or VSC is thrown. It was a very long pit stop because they had zero pressure to do it at regular pace.

Thanks , this answers a lot of questions. Norris got lucky he passed the safety car at just the right moment. But why didn’t he pit at the previous lap, was the signal of ‘safety car deployed’ not on by then ?

No. They showed yellow flags, but Safety Car wasn't out until Lando crossed the pit entry. He'll only save time if he pits during the Safety Car otherwise he'll lose time (also McLaren weren't ready for a pitstop, so there's a good chance his stop would be very slow).

Normally they let everyone pass the SC before the leader is picked up though so they did mess it up. Which is why pretty much all the top running drivers and some principals (Vasseur) were surprised and some even pissed off (e.g. Piastri) on the radio.

so the FIA were to slow to go to SC and were not even watching the leaders and then gifted Mclaren and Norris a free pitstop and win. Given the race was already safely under VSC they should have waited and had Lando fall in behind the safety car the following lap, allowing for mclaren to fairly take a pitstop and or stay out.

That last statement rings false to me - While yes, a pit stop costs a lot less under SC, however the Safety car doesn't act like a VSC, it doesn't keep the same delta between cars, but rather bunches everyone up. If the SC had picked up Norris, by the time he'd made it back to the Start/Finish line & to the pits, Max wouldn't have been 11s back, he would have been on his gear box. Norris most likely would have come out last.

Actually, in the first round the SC could not catch Norris so the example says that for a second round the advantage would still be enough.

SC Blunder gifted Lando a 35 SECOND GAP BEFORE Lando's stop. After Lando pitstop: he came out with a 21 seconds gap (not 26 seconds)... so ACTUAL TIMING DATA showed that Lando pitstop took 14 seconds to come in&out (not just 9 seconds)...

Yeah but the gap between Max and Norris was 18s at the 60% VSC delta speed. 11 at race speed = 18.3 at VSC speed. 11/60% = 18.3 You can see on the live timing data that the gap is 18s before max can even see the safety car, and it remained at 18s until Max caught up at T4. True it did go up to 30+s after that, even if it let Max and everyone else through, the 18s is ample time to make a free pit.

i am right now re-watching the LT - it was exactly 30.473 sec, when the "PIT" is written next to Norris's name. based on LT it is really hard to judge, when he came back to the field, but when he hit the first sector, the difference was 22.3, so, it was around 8 sec, not 14 (during his pitting the time diff was increasing to 35.6s, but this is cannot be the base of the calculation)

You’ve also got to factor in that his time in the pit grid was longer than it could have been because the pit crew were under less pressure, I think it was 4s, they could have done in the usual 2.2s

1:03 But what if the safety car would have picked up Norris? Everyone else would have closed the gap to him in this one lap and he would not have been in 1st after the stop. Happy for him but again an emberrassing performance of the race control again this weekend. Like Alonso sais, they give penalties like they want to and deciding races with their actions to make them more exciting.

The safety car was deployed quickly compared to most crashes, around 25s. It would have had to have been called within 15s of the crash for it to pick up Lando on that lap, which is never gonna happen that quick

If the safety car would have picked up Norris it would have to be called out about 5 seconds earlier. 5 seconds earlier Lando didn't pass the pit lane entry yet so he would have made his pit stop immediatelly and sill came in front of Max. End of story about gifted win.

@@thatsimbalanced2322 the safety car was called very quickly though, 25s is faster than usual, 5-10 seconds quicker than that for Lando to be picked up, never gonna happen. If anything, the mistake was they tried to call it too quickly and missed him. They should have thrown a VSC first and picked Lando on the next lap. Lando would have had free pit and this conversation would never happen.

They should have called SC much earlier, that's the issue. Just like it took them 2 laps for the VSC when Verstappen hit the cone in turn 15 or whetever it is. Or same as it took them 5 laps to red flag at Monaco when Schumacher split his car in two pieces. The people in charge of race decissions and safety calls are a fraud for so many years now.

Not in the rules, a car slowing down too much can cause issues with over heating which wouldn’t be fair

SC don’t pass cars but cars must stay behind SC. That’s the rule. And following SC is the slowest moment for an F1 car, even delta time given to Norris is much faster.

No that's gaining advantage by a faulty system Lando should have reduced speed to not pass safty car

He did reduce to the 60% speed VSC speed along with everyone else, there was just not enough time for the safety car to get out in front of him. If you’re asking why didn’t Lando slow down even more after that to let the safety car catch up, then it’s because slowing down to less than 60% can have a serious impact on cooling and overheating the engine, which would be extremely unfair and could cause a DNF.
