Awsome insight man. The Legion here, in SOF units are using the SCAR-L and from what I hear, they do not like it much. You can FEEL the cheapness is some of what I've heard (I never seen one in combat or training here). Now the scar clones, the Bren and Grot, are pretty good. I used a Grot, made by FB for a few months, and although the barrel length was too long for my taste, it was a good rifle.

Great post. I helped in a small way with the US Marines to determine if this rifle could feasibly replace our current M-4s. We ran it through the Marine Raider pipeline training, alongside the usual M-4s. The curriculum at the time was standard infantry drills and dismounted foot patrolling through thick coastal swamps and thickets. The cadre did our own separate evaluation. And the students provided feedback as well. At the end of the evaluation, we wrote up our findings and submitted to “Higher”. Surprisingly, they took our advice to not replace the M-4 with the SCAR. It simply wasn’t logical to replace our current setup with a SCAR. We did tell “higher” that we would gladly accept the 7.62 version if that was a possibility. Sadly, it wasn’t a choice.

@Karen-is-life
@Karen-is-life 2 жыл бұрын
@@mitchjames9350 the main issue was one of cost vs benefit. With what we had left in the inventory it simply didn’t make fiscal sense to swap out all the 5.56 M-4s for another 5.56 platform that wasn’t really offering any real or tangible result from doing so. It was simple as that. Now, if we had swapped the 7.62 version, lots of guys were onboard with that. But we were told that wasn’t an option. So we did a very balanced review and it came up short (or more accurately, it didn’t come up with enough benefit for doing a swap).

@@Karen-is-life it seems the top brass didn’t want to go back to 7.62 again after ditching it for the 5.45. I reckon they should go back to experimenting with the British 280 round that was being pushed by the European nations in the 50’s. Apparently that was showing very good results until an American colonel used his position to force the 7.62 X 51. After all the Russians in the future may go back to the 7.62x39 and the chimes are using a round bigger than the 5.45 but smaller than the 7.62 rounds so I think it’s best we look at a new round that has high power but with as less recoil etc.

As someone studying firearms design, I really feel like the specific piston configuration is what killed the SCAR from the start. Havinf the BCG extend to meet the piston is a good system for an LMG; it means that you don't need to worry about how well aligned the piston system is when changing barrels, and makes sure you aren't recycling overheated pistons. On a rifle? No. Keep in mind, the Dragunov is in 7.62x54R and uses the same style short-stroke piston as the AR-18 and FAL and works perfectly fine. Heck, the FAL is in 308! I understand that SOCOM wanted a design that could handle their specific needs. An LMG piston setup would be ideal for when you need to frequently fill the role of Autorifleman. That doesn't mean it is the most efficient.

This is exactly how the forward assist ended up being added to Stoner's design before formal adoption. They obviously love the idea of having soldiers force the bolt into battery and the easiest way to do that with a side charger is to fix the charging handle to the bolt carrier. Probably not a good idea to force a cartridge into the chamber but...

I just had a situation where this wasn't a good idea. We had a piece of equipment that consisted of some OTS equipment and simple steel weldments to hold it together. The first engineer designed one for a pilot plant and I made some improvements for a small scale plant. When it came time to install two in a full scale production plant that process engineer wanted a vendor to provide a complete solution and provided specs like you said. The lowest bid they got back was over 10X what it cost to buy the parts and have contractors build/install our system. I also know several times engineers tried to design something themselves and it went pretty bad so I don't either option is foolproof.
@thefirespectrum
@thefirespectrum 2 жыл бұрын
@@christopherascherl2411 Yep, it's situational. But I think the situation you describe is the problem of commissioning or home-building something that is already in production. Presumably, they liked the AK bolt handle, but wanted other things the AK doesn't provide. What you have to do is articulate precisely *why* you like the AK bolt handle and put the requirement in terms of the capability it gives you. Yes, the AK bolt handle reciprocates. That describes what it does, but reciprocation isn't a value in and of itself - the capability to directly apply force to the bolt carrier is what makes it possible to stomp on an AK bolt handle like you're kick-starting an old Harley. And the desire to be able to do that is really about how the user should be able to interface with the system to clear certain types of malfunctions in the field. So some better ways to get to that would be to specify how many of each type of malfunction the system can have per a certain number of cycles, under certain conditions. Then, specify what types of malfunction must be remediable in the field, with no tools, in under a certain amount of time and/or conditions. Yes, that's more open to interpretation, but that's what the trials are for.
@christopherascherl2411

@@thefirespectrum To clarify, as far as I know this equipment isn't manufactured by anyone else as a complete package. It isn't that complicated to build so I wouldn't be surprised if others came up with the same solution in similar industries but I don't know a vendor you can buy it from. In this particular case, I don't think the other engineer wanted to take the responsibility to make it work on himself. I think he was hoping he would get a bid back that would relieve him of that responsibility for a reasonable price. I don't know if the vendors prices where so high because they had more complicated solutions in mind, were looking to make some easy money or something else. We have had good solutions from vendors that solved a problem we didn't have a good answer for. It can be good if the solution could be very open ended as long as you don't let it become a crutch.

There's a lot of people out there that hate on the XCR platform and never held/owned one. Yes, the first gens had a few kinks but, isn't that the case with EVERY firearm/manufacturer?! The SCAR itself had its fair share of lemons. Honestly, I don't understand why Robinson Armament isn't HUGE in the States. The only "cons" I can think of are 1. No ambi charging handle (doesn't reciprocate though). 2. Robinson Armament is a small company and the customer service has mixed reviews. 3. Some people prefer a barrel that pin and welded. All that said, a lot of the negative reviews on the XCR platform back in the day were bullshit. When I say bullshit, I mean that the negative reviews came from people that didn't understand how to use a FULLY adjustable gas system and never torqued the barrel down to spec. A ton of user error. The SCAR 16 is a good rifle but, overrated imho. The SCAR 17 is the more impressive model. However, I'll take an XCR, BREN 2S/2MS, B&T APC-223/308, or ACR over the SCAR's ANYDAY of the week.

@@alexferrara9287 the XCR I have had some issues early on and my experience with customer service was horrendous until I drive down to their shop(live an hour away from them). I have a 7.5 suppressed XCR and it had some issues right off the bat, stuck casings, extractor being blown out of the bolt and trigger pins walking out. After taking it to them personally, meeting everyone there and getting to know them and them knowing my background and style they did everything possible to include a new barrel and op rod. Everything was fixed and the gun made it through 1500 round 2 day course without a single hiccup. What I found odd in my dealings with them is they don’t have any warfighters on their team, they were kinda shocked at some of the things I was telling them how guns are used and abused by soldiers. I went into their shop hating them for the shady stuff that happened but now don’t and I love everything about the XCR. I will say they desperately need someone with experience, I suggested a few changes and hopefully they follow through.

The M16 is the most refined weapon system in it's 50 plus year life span. What the got right at the start was the ergonomics of the operating controls and being a light handy rifle. Then it has evolved into what was required of it along the way. The reciprocating charging handle is a major fail on the Scar 16 and 17 that and cost.

The M16 was far from perfect when it was delivered to the army in Vietnam. It had mad issues, some stemming from the ammunition, some from the rifle itself. But all of those issues were addressed because the army was already committed at that point. They couldn't just throw it out. The contract had already been signed and the money changed hands. So, the army went to Colt and Colt made improvements on the weapon, and today it's very reliable. That could have easily happened with the SCAR, but since the military suddenly decided that everything had to be perfect out of the gate, suddenly all small arms procuring and development came to a screeching halt. Nevermind they afforded the M16 the courtesy of not being perfect from the get go. Nope nope nope, now everything has to be 100% perfect in every way from the start, EVEN IF OUR OWN REQUIREMENTS ARE THEMSELVES FLAWED, and then if you meet all that we're gonna cancel the program anyways.

I guess only NSW got to test Colt SCAR Type A , B and C during the initial SCAR PROGRAM in 2005ish. Colt SCAR Type A , B and C were MONOLITHIC Uppers . Type A (LE6944) , Type B (LE6944 with Whole entire gun in NIB Coating then painted ) , and TYpe C (Model 1020 External Piston with same NIB Coating ) . The NIB coating was done by company we know now as Fail Zero . NSW did not have a clear winner but ultimately went with MK16 . From the initial SCAR PROGRAM is you had to have working 556n and had to have 7.62N SCAR drawings . Colt had the LE901 in drawings and FNMI had MK17 . I figured the SCAR program was a flop because lady at Crane came up with drawings for M4A1 / SOCOM Profile Barrel . Now I know why it was a flop so thanks .. If you care to know about full details of the SCAR Program from NSW it's in BR2 Book by Chris Bartocci . I did know US ARMY Boycotted Pmags in early 2010 time period . IMO LMT MRP would of been an awesome SCAR PROGRAM Winner . People dont realize MRP has been out since 2003ish.. Very interesting bro I love small arms history and real world info .

Honestly if the US wanted a monolithic piston gun so badly for SOCOM the LMT MRP, XCR, and Colt SCAR would've been better. Even the ACR had it been made by a much better company than bankrupt Remington had a lot of potential without the flaws of the FN SCAR
@seanwhite304
@seanwhite304 3 жыл бұрын
@@deejay1534 Yes the original Magpul Massada was superior IMO to the FNMI SCAR . Ole Bushmaster definitely fucked that whole deal up no doubt about it because it had so much potential. To my knowledge there was no actual requirement for the NSW SCAR program but they definitely wanted/ leaning more towards external Piston. The SCAR program came about because NSW wanted their Carbine because they were having issues with M4 . They were using the M4 in ways they were not designed for . During break contact drills they would Go full auto with M4 profile barrel . The M4 profile was never designed to handle that stress . The tactics they were using were good but they chose the wrong gun to do it with . They were heating up the M4 barrels to the transformation temperature which would cause they barrel to burst . Also at the same time Colt was having QC issues with Bolts breaking . Big army was not not having any of these issues at all . Hence the SCAR Program . Colt engineers came up with MONOLITHICs just for the SCAR program . Ultimately SCAR program was a flop because of the SOCOM Profile Barrel or that's what I've read about . Also from this video said as well on why it was never really adopted as primary platform.. The reason why the MONOLITHICs were never released on commercial market until 5 or 6 years later was because of patent infringement. LMT sued Colt and Diemaco / Colt Canada for their MONOLITHIC design and won . Colt has to pay LMT a royalty on all MONOLITHICs sold until the year 2029 when the patent expires .. Off topic for a second . Colt never thought in million years the M4 Family was going to be primary platform for GWOT . Sure they figured specialized units would use them but never thought Big Army would ever adopt . The LE694X series , Diemaci IUR / C.C. MRR are the best Carbines and Rifles that they ever made . They are definitely the pinnacle of Colt engineers at the that period of time . Colt still has never released their M5 ENHANCED with all Ambi Controls . They developed that fir the Product Improvement Program . The M5 was Internal or External Piston piston with longer MONOLITHIC Rail and Lower had Ambi Safety , Mag and Bolt Release . For sure no questions asked LMT MRP / MWS is the best MONOLITHIC platform period . Yes the Colt SCAR Type B or C should of won but ultimately they wanted entirely new platform. Just like Colt IAR should of beat M27 IAR . The Colt IAR was better in every way shape and form . It had built in HEAT Sync to dissipate heat . Also the LE901 should of won as well but Colt was to late to the party . Ultimately Colt got stagnant because of their SOUL SOURCE Contract . Colt has not done anything innovative since 2004 SCAR PROGRAM. Another part that came out of the SCAR PROGRAM was LMT ENHANCED BCG/BOLT. It blew Milspec BCG/BOLT out if the water . It was never adopted because it would operate smoothly in Rifle Length Gas system because it was designed for 14.5 Car Length .. LMT and Crane were also the Godfathers of the MK18 barrel. Colt had absolutely nothing to do with MK18 or SOCOM Barrel but they had that SOUL SOURCE which made LMT and Crane give up those TDP / Drawings for those concepts . Until Colt actually started producing MK18 MOD 0 CQBRs what Crane did is use M16A1 Lowers and Cut down 14.5 barrels to 10 3 and opensd up gas ports to 0.70 .

@@seanwhite304 also with the M4, in the early 2000s the carbine gas system wasn't fully optimized with length, buffer, and port size, so those sub-14.5" M4s had serious reliability issues and wore through parts like crazy, making piston guns much more attractive for short barreled rifles that were reliable in all conditions. Even today short piston guns like the MCX, 416, and Colt LE901 are superior to short barreled DI guns in terms of reliability but AR technology has progressed to the point that the added reliability isn't necessary.

@@deejay1534 The M4 TDP has always been 0.62 Gas Port and H BUFFER since it came out . M4A1 used H2 Buffer and Colt IAR used H3 Buffer . The M4 TDP is 0.62. Colt or US DOD cannot change that TDP because that's what the contract calls for . Once that M4 gets to its Unit , sure they can mess around with . All TDP M4 / M4A1s are batch tested by US DOD QC Expert . They test 6 M4s from every batch . They break down all 6 Carbines and swap rebuild them with parts from the other 6 Guns . Then they run all 6 Carbines through 6000 round endurance test . To my knowledge since 1994 the TDP has been 0.62 Gas Port but I also dont know everything. Could it been changed in early GWOT maybe . I honestly dont know . Colt owns the M4 TDP and that TDP expires in the year 2052. FNMI has to pay Colt a totality for using their TDP . HK 416D 10.4" for sure are superior for running suppressed and being used super hard. The same people who designed the 416 also designed Sig 516 and Caracal 816A2 . The 516 and 816 were the best kept secrets for long time . Plenty of operators were getting the job done with Colt MK18 MOD0 and Mod 1 CQBRs with KAC NT4 or SF SOCOM RC . Those operators would not use them if they weren't reliable . I've heard that Dam Neck used a shit ton of Noveske 10.5s , 14.5 and 16" as well . They will use whatever it takes to get the job done . I would also imagine they've used plenty of other stuff as well that we know nothing about . I honestly do not know if Devgru is still using 416s . Pretty sure CAG is but I couldn't tell you for sure or not . The only MCX I believe JSOC is using is actually called SURG . The SURG was the replacement for the Honey Badger chambered in 300 Blackout. The MCX lost French contract Trials . MCX is super nice modular design for sure . I definitely favor LMT MRP Piston just because it can be swapped to DI by changing the barrel and BCG . That change can be done at the user level and no Armorer is required. LWRCI is another awesome company that makes super solid Piston ARs . My personal favorite Piston operated gun is actually HK 433 . That's the only HK 556N I've ever wanted . Sucks HK is not bringing that to the commercial market . Me personally I'm DI fan . 12.5" - 13.9" barrel lengths are my favorites . Especially paired with OSS 556K Can . If I could only own 1 AR it would for sure be LMT MARS-L with DI and Piston Configs paired with OSS 556K..

It seems people always want to replace the M4/M16 and every attempt just makes an M4/M16 copy, and most of them function worse. As for "barrel changes" just get a different upper, swap it, easy. No one is going to carry a barrel bag around with them hot swapping barrels in combat on a rifle like that. You just have the different uppers back and base and you swap them. But it seems everyone wants a new gun that is worse in every way and pretend it is better. Remember the XM8? What a disaster that thing was. The HK416? The XM8/G36 gas system is pretty good, the receivers may have some issues and lacks the ease of modularity the AR systems have. The 416 kinda integrates that piston system for ARs. Personally I think the M4 is going to fit the bill for 90+% of what the military is going to be doing

@@cokinator100ify I think that's because unlike 90% of them the HK416 was actually designed to use the piston from the get go and not as an afterthought. From my money the PWS long-stroke system is the best AR piston variant out there (fwiw I never used into service and only owned it once I was again a civilian, so I can't speak to how it would hold up in a real fight compared to the proven 416, but mine has been good for years of hard use and shoots like a dream). The SCAR 556 sucked. That’s why it wasn’t selected. When I was in the Army, I tried it out, and I didn’t like it. It just felt awkward. The H&K 416 is good, and I really like the piston operated set up versus the gas operated set up on the Colt M4. Touching a cool barrel is really satisfying.

Paused it at 02:25 to say in other words.. The SCAR is like socialism, sounds good on paper but shits the bed when you put it to the true test! 🤭

Damn. Most of Europe and especially Scandinavia must have really shit the bed then :( Why do Americans think Socialism and Communism is synonymous?

That they actually wrote the spec to have the reciprocating handle blows my mind. It's not like non-reciprocating was a new idea.

I'm a little late to this video. I was wanting to get the scar pistol and put the JMAC folding arm brace on it for security work. Well I went with the CMMG Dissent 5.56 10.5" upper and the 6.5" 300 blkout upper. I was able to setup both CMMG uppers for the price of one SCAR pistol without that had no accessories. Great video.

And here I was thinking that the scarH 17 was the scar with all the issues, and the scar lite 16 was in 5.56 and therefore didn’t have issues….. boy I was wrong 😑 Thanks for all your info. God bless and I hope everyone has a great day!

The rounds up in the op rod channel I think might have been corrected with a little plastic piece slid into the receiver. I have an early Virginia imported SCAR 16s that lacks that piece while a later South Carolina imported one has the piece. I’ve also noticed that the stock button color and mag wells molds are different between the two. Thanks for the informative video.
