I think the reason why the film works so well is that BECAUSE it's simple. Sonic's charm and lasting legacy comes from his personality-his personality alone makes simple stories work. Sonic Unleashed is a perfect example of this: it's a really simple story, yet with Sonic's personality it's so charming that it's hailed as one of the best Sonic games out there. With this film being so simple, it somehow works. You do feel for Sonic's plight in this film, and the redesign REALLY helps with that-they rely on his facial expression in order to get the needed emotions across rather than spell it out for the audience in multiple occasions which I appreciate.

I very much agree with this statement and after giving the film a second viewing I Realized the Actors and crew were having fun with it all and trying put effort into it they knew what they were doing they wanted to have a throwback to where movies didn't need to be overly story heavy there is just enough exposition, it doesn't wanna go to far and instead explore those things in later films. It's how you set up a franchise you make a film that's simple so everyone can get something out and build on it later, some of the best franchises have done this Like Back to the future or The Nightmare Before Christmas their all so simple short and sweet

I am really disappointed in critics because stuff like this is obviously set up from the beginning and the fact that they missed them is almost cringeworthy. The top 3 things I see. 1. "It was terrible, sonic flossed" I bet you if Deadpool flossed it would have been seen as hilarious and 9/10 stars mate. Stop being petty over a KIDS movie where a KID is doing things that KIDS do because they ACKNOWLEDGE that kids act like kids! WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT? With that mini rant by a babysitter who has dealt with said kids often out of the way the other 2 points. 2. "It was racist" HOLD UP. The main couple is a white male cop with a competent woman of color in a stable relationship and THEY are basically Sonic's parents. HOW is that racist. EXPLAIN. 3. "It played it too safe and didn't include a lot of sonic's world" ARE YOU SERIOUS? You are LUCKY you got his world at ALL. They had to redesign Sonic and ALL the scenes he was in. The world didn't exist to SHOW you more! The budget and due dates FORCED them to play it safe and they STILL redesigned sonic, pandered to both fans and general audiences at the SAME time and broke past DETECTIVE PIKACHU IN SALES. Fair point, but the kids that grew up with Sonic aren’t kids anymore. The audience who would have really appreciated this film would have been the 80’s kids, not the 2020 kids who probably haven’t even played sonic colours. Sega shouldn’t have capitalised on the idea that Sonic is a kid’s character. It’s the die-hard Sonic fans should have been catered to, not the children who just happen to be in the same generation.

Um they did address his name as eggman because of the flying robots. In one scene sonic says "Your Flying Eggs are pretty impressive Mr Eggman." I felt that was good as he did call him eggman because of his machines and his misreferal of MR instead of DR kinda shows its a little bit of an improvised insult on Sonic's part.

A idea got into my mind: what would you change (editing wise) in the movie to make it somewhat better? I got a few ideas (feel free to add to that): *Remove the "guess how I ended up in this situation" scene in the start, and start immediately in green hill. *Replace the floss dance with the one in the trailers (the fact it was different in the trailers make me believe it was a late change, and honestly it pisses me off). Edit out the second one entirely. *Cut the Olive garden talk at the end a bit shorter so it does not distract too much. *Add more sonic music easter eggs - city escape in the San Francisco chase scene, dragon road in the great Wall, mirage saloon in the bar scene, Eggman theme ("I am the Eggman" maybe?) in his after credit scene, boss theme in either the robot car fight or the encounter in the rooftop, -tailsthemeinyouknowwhatscene- ,etc. (Feel free to suggest more).

Honestly, aside from the one fart joke and flossing (I mean at this point I have just accepted it), this film was pretty good in my opinion. Could it have done more? Oh yeah. But honestly, for a first film, it's not too bad. I will agree that they should have taken a little more risks, like maybe focus more on sonic as a baby in some flashback to explore even more of his character, and I do think that they shouldn't have made Sonic talk about his loneliness THAT much, but if these guys listened to our criticism on Sonic's design and even delayed it for us, then who's to say they won't address the issues we had with this first film in the next one? To me, the movie is a great jumping off point, but a simply good movie at it's core.

This is an old post but I will answer a few of those questions for you. 1. With the sonic movie redesign, they had to scrap a LOT of development that they planned for sonic's world. The redesign had a direct impact on their production, but it wasn't all negative. It is just something to note. 2. Sonic 1 was about sonic defeating Eggman solo and being alone for years. Sonic movie 1 does that too, it is copying the games. 3. The loneliness thing makes perfect sense to me. Sonic wants to have an identity and have people love him for who he is, just like any child would. It is a precursor to a trait Sonic has a lot of in the games, the show-off, happy-go-lucky personality that craves attention. This wasn't out of the blue, this was a genius move. It also allows for Tails to fill the role of his best friend in the next film since his human friend has a job and life. While "donut lord" loves sonic a LOT he won't be able to aid Sonic on his adventures like Tails will. Having Sonic have to choose to save the world over staying with his new family after he had already lost his mother figure as a child would be a HUGE decision for Sonic to make and I am excited to see what they do with it.

This movie actually ties in super well with the games, setting up for maybe the exact story of the games but with more to tell. With this movie introducing Sonic and Eggman, setting up the world and how the characters work. Just to do a masterpiece in the next sequels... which is the SAME exact thing of the games. Sonic 1, little bland but simple game with a charming vibe. Sonic 2, sets up a much bigger story and plot with higher stakes happening. Sonic 3, the masterpiece that ties in the whole story and finishes the whole conflict once and for all And if this happens for the movies too, which it could.. since the sequel was announced already... I think that its possible to get even more than 1 triology... Maybe we could get an Adventure Triology with Heroes counting as the third one of the triology. They could even set up for that with Metal sonic being made in a sequel, and developed a along it, and then set up for his come back to end it all as Neo Metal Sonic. So imo they dont actually needed to do all of that in the FIRST movie ya know, they had a kinda short budget. But i think it is a great start, good and simple like Sonic 1.

Well, the simplicity of it just works. I wasn't expecting a dazzling film that completely changes our perceptions of how films will be made in the future, I went in hoping just to see a nice laid back film with a simple, flowing plot (kind of reflecting the simplicity of the plot in the actual Sonic games). And damn me down I got what I was hoping for. Along with that, we do see clear character development in the film, as Sonic finally attains his overall wish, to find a friend and gets out of this state of isolation, and Tom realizing that he really just wants to stay in Green Hills and not just go off to San Francisco, even though he worked hard for it prior to the events of the movie. It's very simple, I know, but it doesn't need to be over the top. It's target audience is clearly kids, it features the floss which is somehow still relevant, comedy that appeals to a younger demographic, it's just a kids movie. I disagree that it was bland. I can see where that statement is coming from, but at the end of the day, what were we expecting?

I would love to see a movie in this one's style of animation that was fully animated, it could be a story about the timeline, like Sonic's origins and how he met his friends, it could even have an endgame-like ending on all of his friends on a battle against the game's enemies; I guess it would be kinda messy, but even if it was cheesy it wouod be kinda nice. It could even have some references to this movie and Sonic's old design when some shenanigans happened like him looking in a fake mirror or Shadow insulting him or something. Ok lemme make this easier. Does this movie have sonic the hedgehog? (Yes) does it focus on him and not the side characters throughout the entire movie? (Yes) are the characters aside from sonic and egg man entertaining? (Mostly) does this movie have lovable nods to the source material rather than shoving it into our faces? (Absolutely). Aside from the painful product placement with Olive Garden (seriously would have been ironically more subtle and more fun if they chose sonic drive through) with some dated lines and memes (floss dancing) this film in the end gives us what we want, a sonic the hedgehog movie where he does what we want sonic to do once the plot gets rolling. It's far from a masterpiece but it's a fun family film that I'd probably watch again. Especially if it's the climax cause that final fight was awesome!

I feel like the only person who agrees with this reviewer while reading these comments and that makes me feel kind of weird because of it. Sure, I understand that this is a “kid’s film,” but so was How To Train Your Dragon, the Incredibles, and many others, as well as many other animated shows aimed at families and kids/teens that have a story that’s significantly better than this film. I didn’t necessarily find any of the story “bland” per say, or at least, i didn’t find any of the aspects outside of Sonic bland, but the writing consisted of so many lazy and frustrating/underwhelming elements that it kind of drew the critical side of me out while watching the film. I did enjoy a few elements, and overall I had a fun time with the film, but I probably couldn’t agree with this review more. Thank you for making it.

Honestly as a MAJOR Sonic fan who was waiting literal years for the movie I was sadly really disappointed with the end result. I was up to date with just about everything about the movie as it was about to be released so I kinda already knew that the movie was going to be bland and unappealing to me, yet I was still determined to watch it. When I had finally gone to see the movie I came in with really low expectations hoping that this will help me like this movie, yet somehow the movie had actually shatterd my low expectations with something that I literally can not willingly watch again... My biggest problem with the movie is that it was too mainstream. Like they went mainstream for the first film. If they went mainstream for the first film then for the sequels they go all out on Sonic themes and music. Then I'll be happy. Wasn't he supposed to be a dorky kid at the start? The flossing makes absolute sense. He's supposed to be a child who's been in isolation for a while, super hyperactive as well. He *would* floss, even in the games he would probably floss. He has that "guys check me out!" hyper attitude that works so well

This is THE BEST family movie I've seen, and while it DOES have a few flaws, it IS one of my favorite movies. MY PARENTS, who don't really know much about Sonic, LOVED IT, so I feel like you're judging it too much (But you ARE a critic, so whatever).

I've got a bad feeling about future movies. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this movie. I had a lot of fun. But the thing is, you see a pattern in movies like these. First they start with an IP that has a fair to large size of content to work with and make a movie. This movie is usual lightly packed with stuff from the IP, as to start off with an advantage while still leaving things simple enough to get a fanbase of both new people and old fans. That's when things get out of control. See, this is where the pattern takes a bad downward fall in some cases. They start to throw EVERYTHING at the sequels. They introduce all the things they either want to add or think that they SHOULD add, regardless of these things actually progressing or enhancing the quality of the film. Long story short, I just hope they're careful with how much they add when they make the next chapter of this story. Not too little as to make it feel like a waste, but not too much as to overload the movie and blur the whole point of it.

I watched this movie recently after postponing it for two years, and guess what. I love it. And not because it's groundbreaking or it has some amazing writing. This is a movie that was made as a corporate product to cash in on nostalgic characters, sure, but at the same time you can TELL the creators LOVED the source material. And they had fun writing a dumb kids movie, just as much as a dumb kid me loved writing his Sonic fanfics. The references, the lore that was created, the sequel bait, it was all made by people who grew up with Sonic and loved both games and cartoons. I can't wait to see if they can pull off something equally as enjoyable in the second movie as they did in this one.

The redesign was definitely the best possible choice. Imagine the scene where Sonic is stalking Tom and his wife through the window, but with the old design. Also, shut up about the flossing. It's a great element since Sonic is a kid. I see kids flossing everywhere in my country, so it only makes sense that Sonic would floss.
