Some pretty great points in there. I don't have the OG but did jump on the Rossum when it came out. Of the things you mentioned, my favorite is how you really don't have to struggle too hard with getting it to sound good. I've heard SO many people over the years say something like "I don't need an SP because on my DAW I can take a sound, EQ it, run it through this certain plug in, EQ that, compress everything, run it through another 3 plug ins, then run it through a custom computer program I wrote, ....." 😵‍💫There's something about being able to sample into it without doing anything else and it spits out niceness. One other thing I like about it is the workflow. It's just fun to work on for some reason.

On top of that, all of those processes have still never sounded like a real OG SP-12 or SP-1200.

I have an OG sp1200 and it's true there's something about the original it's very inspiring to work on you sample with your ears and create on a personal level in a world of software/hardware with endless sample time the 10 seconds on OG is perfect less thinking more creation this machine has an insane short cut to get straight to the magic

Quick question about the SP as never tried one....are you able to finetune the pitch using the sliders (like inbetween semitones) or do you move between semitone steps?

What up TDS? On your current project are you using the SP1200 with other samplers for tracks?
@thomasmatthews8873

The bit rate probably isn't a factor because for example: the Casio SK-1, yamaha vss-30 and Ensoniq MIRAGE are all 8 bit BUT!!! None hits like the MIRAGE. There must be something else inside those samplers that make em drop like a pallet of bricks. The Sp 12 turbo has a different grit from the Ensoniq Samplers. But it's so beautiful.

Does the emax1 hit hard like the sp1200

No, but it definitely shares a strong familial resemblance. Also, it doesn't really alias much and it doesn't have a real sequencer. Although, it offers more sampling time, synthesizer processing, and variable sample rates.

I hardly ever use more than the 10 seconds on my Rossum, it sounds amazing and punchy. The build quality is also insane, CookinSoul showed off the difference between both and they sound exactly the same.

Had all 3 (og, rossom and 2400). The Rossum hrots just as hard and sounds just as dope as the original. If there's any difference, its so small its unnoticeable. You can take 2 OG 1200s and theyll sound different but unnoticeable. The 2400 is the weaker link in the equation. And thats mostly because of the horrible work flow it has along with its emulation and bad filters. But it all comes down to who's behind the machine

I hope Mr. ROSSUM make the SP2400 a 16 bit sampler with 2.5 seconds per 32 Pads. That’s 80 seconds of sample time.

your videos are nice, man, and I can dig everything about the sound, dont get me as a hater, but that limitation fetish gotta have an acronym, lets start using LF because its so popular nowadays, companies have incorporated that for new gear, so they doesn’t even have to explain themselves more than “oh we did this a 4 track groove box in 2024 because you know, limitations are nice”. but man seriously, if rossum are the exact same machine with double the sample time but you think the OG is better because the memory fits a floppy disk when you can, you know, just limit yourself to use half the memory, I dont know if we talking about music anymore, its getting too close to something like a vintage videogame community, all about the experience and stuff… idk, just something to think about.
@gabrieldonl2311
@gabrieldonl2311 2 ай бұрын
one last point: I think if rossum made that new SP with huge sample time, like really nowadays sample time, it would allow people to use jt in a whole different way and make really new stuff that never been done before, simply because it was not possible. But what you see people doing on that machines is the same old school beat remake that already been done a thousand times before, so where are the creativity from that limitation now ? In that case the limitation is just limiting the creativity.

Besides all of the proportion/synergy talk, the new SP is just a replica. I can hear a noticeable difference. People don't want to accept that the new SPs have different electronics and software, which make for a different instrument. Also, the 2400 shouldn't even be mentioned. They share no relation or connection to SP-1200s, and I'd rather use freeware software than look at one.

It´s not true. It´s like saying you can´t do certain kind of rock music without exactly the same guitar some player has or had. I´ll stick to Chuck Berry he used to buy a new guitar every year. It´s the player man, "nothing" else but that and very good equipment and ear, the music you talk about was mixed properly by masters and even before that master producers sampled and mixed what got I/O of the sp12/00. Pete, Jay and ´Lib can do it with any machine. A´Brown does it in a win xp cool edit wave editor. For me its about music and hiphop and having a vision and spinning vinyl, the sp1200 is a relatively small detail in this circumstance. You should talk more `bout that and help kids with music making I find, more real I find. Yes then let there be a discussion but stop saying it´s like that and there is no other way to achieve gritty raw drums without an sp1200, which is not true. I only take it from David Rossum personally and Roger Linn (mpc 60). I am happy to not have a sp1200 as I put much more effort in the rest of the studio gear and mixing, good monitors and all of the things that matter much more than one particular machine. Funnily I learned the most in mixing and hearing thru playing guitar this is why I love Chuck Berry and all other guitar pioneers so much, like Lee Dorsey. I don´t even need to sample from vinyl exclusively. In my book mixing is paramount and if you ain´t got this skill even a sp1200, a 950 and a mp 60 won´t be any good use to ya and ur crew. So you should rather tell people to buy a good soundcard I find and show them to lay down a good hiphop beat, a little arrangement and how they might write some lyrics about love, life, loss & gain - things that matter. Kids just buy a esi-32 /2000 /4000 and thank me later it´s also from EMU and you hear it. The Daydream Sound has a video about that. To my ears it sounds even better then the sp1200. Listen to the voice of the underground and stay real - Peace sisters & brothers

Totally disagree, floppy’s fail. I have modified my machines for better saving and filter accessibility. I have two OG’s, a Rossum and a S2400. I spoke to Dave Rossum himself at Namm and another guy who help write code back in the day. If they would have e had the tech today, they would have made it clean and that sound due to lack of clarity in the chips would have never happend. Though there is slight difference in sound even between even the OG’s. I’m fortunate to have these machines because I have had them though the late 80’s and 90’s, but you can get that same sound or very close via plugs or the Rossum or S2400. Believe me these machines are not worth $5000. They are not magical, music skills and learning how to play the ideas in your mind is the magic…though I’m a gear head and love to talk shop all the time. No one who consumes music cares on what we use to make music. Does your music it knock? have people bouncing or dancing? To each their own opinions. No unicorns anymore, you can get very close to the sp1200 sound with today’s tools.

But... We dont. I spent many hours, many weeks many Years with cheap matériel and plugs. I finally bought my first sp12 for 1.6K. defintely a total game changer = never go so fast, never love a Sound so much , never have that sequencing so Quick .... And every producer knows that Time IS the Key - for keeping inspiration and mojo Right. So We are ok = its not Magic or Sacred stuff but its absolutely a great Tools. 2400 Is ok but for me not so useful.

From my (nearly 40 years) experience with floppies: They don't fail as much as many people tell. I had more issues wih HDDs than with floppies. Most of the HDDs I used in the late 90s are completly dead now, some CD-ROM from that period are unreadable too. Most of the floppies (even from the 80s) still work. One reason might be that I'm living in a part of the world with no extreme temperatures and/or humidity or dust in the air but I still think that saying 'Floppies fail' is a bit unfair.🙂

Sorry, but the Rossum is a magical beast. Eff! The sound… THAT DAMN! SEQUENCER IS THE 💩!!! The sampler magically make every sample match, it gels everything sonically 🤯 The SP1200 EMU or ROSSUM is a must buy for any DJ that spin vinyl. The SP1200 adds another dimension to your relationship with your records. If you own Technics 1200? The SP1200 is a must buy. PERIOD!!!
