By Tien Zuo ( / tientzuo , CEO at Zuora and author of the book "Subscribed"
With Mathias Pastor ( / pastormhm , Director at The Family
It's been a hot year for Tien Tzuo: Between Zuora's IPO this year, and the release of his new book a few months ago. His company Zuora has become the leading Subscription Economy evangelist, allowing any company to successfully launch, manage, and transform into a subscription business.
What you may not know, is that it all started in a tiny office in Mountainview, where Tien and his cofounders started one of the first businesses with the idea to sell services instead of products. It was a new idea at the time, and they literally coined the term "Subscription Economy".
In the old world - let’s call it the Product Economy - it was all about things. Acquiring new customers, shipping commodities, billing for one-time transactions. But in this new era, it’s all about relationships. More and more customers are becoming subscribers because subscription experiences built around services meet consumers’ needs better than the static offerings or a single product.
And it works. Since its launch in 2007, Zuora has raised almost $250M, gathered over 900 customers, employed 850+ people throughout throughout North America, Europe, China, India, Japan, and Australia.

Ownership is still going to be the future.....The only subscription model that Is good for the customer is the FREE account that gives access to a product you can buy and own. A maintenance subscription would be the monthly charge, but If the customer unsubscribes, then they get to KEEP what they bought , minus the maintenance /updates.. None of this $X dollars /month to rent and if you unsubscribe, you lose access to the product you paid for stuff.. There are too many reasons a site can close down or you can no longer access you're supposed purchase.

mhouse777 Mmm almost everything now is via subscription model! Amazon Prime over BlueRay, Netflix over DVD, iPhones once the contract is finished after 3 years are worthless.. it’s all about Subscription ⚫️🔴👍🏾

@@TRIBECHIEFTAIN - it's all about subscriptions that benefit the greedy corporations , not the customer. Ownership will always be king. Ps. netflix now offers ownership of movies you can buy and watch offline btw.

@sal zerilli You can add Adobe Creative Cloud to that. Designers were upset by that (myself included) when it was initially announced. But now you can end your subscription whenever you want and you pay 30 a month and have access to every single program in the Adobe Suite. I think there are 16 currently.

Fascinating interview; I learned a lot. The videography is atrocious -- until I saw this video, I didn't realize how little I think about the person behind the camera with most videos I watch. Throughout this video it felt like the person behind the camera couldn't stop reminding us that they're there by changing focus and camera angles. Really annoying and distracting.
