Four years ago it was not much of a recorder. Some years ago I compared one with the Olympus LS11 i had. The noise was too much to bare and the input signal much lower then the LS11. I did not expect such terrible result and returned it within half a day. And bought the more expensive Tascam DR100mkiii. That was a joy!

A feature in the DR40 (and I’m assuming DR40x, too) that I really like and haven’t found anywhere else is the Peak Reduction auto level control. Unlike typical auto gain, which constantly raises and lowers the input gain to accommodate the incoming signal, the Peak Reduction feature only lowered the gain enough to prevent clipping and then left it alone. It wasn’t going up and down all the time and dynamics stayed intact. That feature doesn’t even seem to be in their new PortaCapture 32 bit recorder, based on what I see in the online manual.
@queridodiario3613 Жыл бұрын
Oh you mean, like a limiter. Even zoom H1 has this.
@JTroskaTV Жыл бұрын
@@queridodiario3613 it wasn’t a typical limiter. A typical limiter pulls the level down for a quick instant and then releases back to the set level. The Peak Reduction in the Tascam was like having somebody adjust the manual gain down for you if the signal got too hot. It didn’t release it back to your set level. It just brought it down if needed and left it there.

Re: the noise floor when using dynamic mics, I read that using a preamp for the mic before plugging into the DR-40X solves that. That’s basically what the issue is, right? I use a combination of condenser and dynamic mics with my music recording, and the noise floor with, say, a Shure SM58/57 has always been an issue, I remember struggling with the noise level when I was using a 58 with my Tascam cassette Portastudio.
@HiddenDriveways4 жыл бұрын
Yes, a decent external preamp solves the noise issue with the DR-40X and dynamic mics. There are even tiny, portable in-line preamps like the Triton Audio Fethed that solve this problem. Here's a link to that item - amzn.to/38tnZQZ

@HiddenDriveways4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! I use the attenuator cable to get cleaner sounding recordings in the camera when I connect the headphone output of the audio recorder to the mic input of a camera. I've gotten okay results using regular 3.5mm cables, but the attenuator cable always sounds good. It's not a necessity, though, unless you're doing the kind of shoot where there isn't the chance to do additional takes or a reshoot, such as a wedding video.

Great video. Thank you. I bought the DR-40X and very rarely use it. The reason to buy it was to spread the built-in mics, put it on a table in the centre of my music room, and face it towards my hifi speakers. This way, I assume it will record audio the way my speakers actually sound in person. I could take a line level out of my hifi system and directly plug it into the DR-40X but that would just give me a hi-res audio file on the SD card, right?. In order to share files with friends and family with music the way I hear it in my room, what best way would you suggest? I have 4 different pairs of speakers, and I want to share how they all differently sound while playing the same music from the same source. Your thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It's an okay tool if you are doing casual projects but any aspiring filmmakers should know a couple things first. The layout is very stripped down but leads to a ton of menu time. It's a cheap build and it shows because it will break if you use it heavily. The background noise is atrocious even if you're using the built in microphones. It also breaks down fast. I've had mine for about 5 months and I'm starting to see some serious slow down. My zoom h4n pro I've had for 5 years and is running almost as fast as when I bought it. Audio gear is meant to last a long time, I'm still using my shotgun mic from 8 years ago and it still sounds great. This thing is not a good long term investment
@HiddenDriveways4 жыл бұрын
Personally, I find I spend less time hunting around in menus with the DR-40X as compared with the Zoom H4n Pro. When I wrote my in-depth review of the DR-40X, I did some research trying to find people who had complained that the old DR-40 had broken on them, and I could find very few incidents considering how popular it had been for so many years. I've compared the sound quality of the built in mics on the DR-40X with the H4n Pro extensively (you can hear 9 minutes of that in my recent H4n Pro vs DR-40X video kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYKUdaWwrdiLps0). I do think the mics on the H4n Pro are slightly better sounding, but I completely disagree that the DR-40X has atrocious background noise. I've had the original DR-40 for many years, and it operates as just as it did when I first bought it, so I have not experienced the slow down you have. If you want a high-quality audio recorder, there are much better choices out there than either the DR-40X or H4n Pro. They are both entry-level.

The DR-40X will give you more options. You can switch the mics between X/Y and A/B positions to see which one sounds better. You also have the XLR inputs, so you could use higher-quality external microphones in conjunction with the built-in mics. But, if you can get a sound you like with the DR-05X, you can save a lot of money. Maybe try the DR-05X first, and if you're not satisfied with the sound, return it and get the DR-40X.

Hei 🙂 So, i have to choose between this new beautiful model from Tascam, the DR40X and the Zoom H5, considering that it will be used for weddings, mostly from Dj's mixer, what would you choose? Thanks 😎
@HiddenDriveways4 жыл бұрын
The only way to properly connect the line output from a DJ mixer to a Zoom H5 is through the TRS inputs. This is lame, and a limiting factor. You don't want to get stuck at a wedding realizing that you don't have the proper TRS patch cables on you. The DR-40X can handle line-level signals from TRS or XLR. Based on this alone, I recommend you get a DR-40X.

Recorders like this take a little getting used to. They have lots of features, so there's a decent amount of stuff to browse through in the menus. But the DR-40X has an intuitive layout, and it makes more sense to me than other recorders. Just be prepared: it doesn't have a dedicated On/Off button. You hold down the Stop button to do these functions.

I just need more knowledge about the unit. I get frustrated and don’t touch it for about three weeks, then go back. If you have a good memory and retain information good, you will love the unit. I on the other hand have a terrible memory. I have played guitar professionally and have made records and CDs. I want to do everything myself now. I am very close. I just need to know how to store my songs. I may have just erased my one song . Yes, it took me a year and a half to record it. Erased many songs by mistake.

Until last year I recorded mostly soloists, duos and a few trios for 2 nights a week in a small cafe. Generally acoustic/electric pop and folk performers and sometimes violin (played fiddle styel) and saxophone, etc. If you could get two decent standalone microphones I would place them at key spots, say to catch pairs of players. Run the microphone cables about 10' (a distance a proper cable would come in) and have the DR-40 there, using the two internal microphone capsules to capture more of the room ambience to give the performance more "realism" if that's important. Point those internal mics outwards in the A-B configuration (the DR-40 will detect if you change orientation while it's turned on.) If you won't be able for any reason to adjust levels separately later on, and there is an audience, I'd propose keeping the internal microphone levels lower than you might think. They pick up people noise you wouldn't even notice during live recording, along with room ambience/echo so like seasoning you just want a dash, not ruining the main content.

8:32 - The voice over is great, how did you got it to sound like this without any of the ambient noise picking up? Can you share details how you did so? Thanks. Is it better to do voice over using the tascam as a standalone recorder or better hooked to a USB to computer?
@HiddenDriveways7 ай бұрын
No ambient noise was picked up because there wasn’t any ambient noise. It was a quiet room that didn’t have any problems with sound reflecting off of surfaces. Nothing special, just a regular room in a regular house. The mics are off to the side of my mouth, not in front of it. That was intentional. I find that voice over and podcasting sound better when the microphone is positioned that way. Just set proper gain, record in a quiet, non-reverberant place, and position the mic where it sounds best.
@aseltzer1444 жыл бұрын
Nice overview Sam and I enjoyed the recorder history . I have the older DR-40 so I I also appreciate the comparison between new and old. One point I am unclear about is that you indicate the the DR-40s have 4 independent channels and I find that not to be quite true for the DR-40. In comparison, the Zoom H4N can record a mono track to any of its 4 tracks. The DR-40 can only multitrack by recording a stereo pair over a prerecorded stereo pair. Has this changed with the DR-40X?
@HiddenDriveways4 жыл бұрын
The H4n Pro has more capability for multi-track recording. You can overdub each of its four tracks independently. The DR-40X is a bit more limited. You can overdub a stereo track on top of another stereo track. You can also set the DR-40X to record a mono track over a stereo track, but it's much more limited. For music recording and overdubbing, the H4n Pro has a lot more to offer.
@aseltzer1444 жыл бұрын
Thanks again Sam. I agree that the H4N is the better multitracker but the DR-40 still gets the job done and can record a “separate” track for the overdubs. These tracks plus the base track can be exported to a DAW for the ultimate in flexibility. Staying in the Tascam line, I would also recommend the DP-06 or DP-08 for someone whose primary recording objective is for multitrack audio creation, should that help any of your listeners.

@HiddenDriveways4 жыл бұрын
You can connect the headphone output of the DR-40X to a camera's mic input. Depending on the sensitivity of the input on the camera, this can be done with either a regular 3.5mm cable, or a cable with a built-in attenuator. The DR-40X only has one output, so if you plug a cable into it, you won't have a headphone output. But, you can use a special kind of attenuator cable with a spliced-in headphone output. Yes, you can record on both the recorder and the camera at the same time. You can plug a lavalier mic into the DR-40X, but it will need to plug in via XLR. The Zoom H4n Pro has a 3.5mm input, so if you have that kind of lav mic, it might be the better choice. I explain all of this stuff in more detail here: www.sam-mallery.com/2010/12/using-a-zoom-h4n-as-an-on-camera-dslr-mic/

@@HiddenDriveways thank You. It looks like Tascam DR-07x has also mic input for lav but no xlr inputs. I know this trick with splitter as I am connecting 2 headphones to tascam dr60dmk2 it works great.

Hi! Can u also use the DR-40X as main microphone while you are filming with your iphone? Ps: your video is very clear!
@HiddenDriveways4 жыл бұрын
You could, but you would need to sync the audio file the DR-40X recorded with the iPhone footage in video editing software. The microphones are good sounding, but in videos it's best to get the microphones as close to the sound source as possible, so they're not a great choice for that purpose. Has anyone told you, that you sound like Fred Schneider? :-) After heard a bunch of Tests of the Pre-Amps of the DR-40X with dynamic microphones I decided to spend 50€ more and try a new H4n Pro Black, but it is not near the Tascams easy useabilty. I owned a DR-40 for some years. I was satisfied with it but never used dynamic microphones. But if ... So I send the H4n Pro back and now I’m going to try the H5. Costs only 10€ more. If it is as uneasy to use like the H4n I‘m out of ideas.

I often get Spike Jonez, Quinten Tarantino, and Shaggy from Scooby Doo. Fred Schneider is a new one, but a high compliment. I'm a lifelong B52's fan. Bands can't get much better than them. I was actually checking out Fred Schneider signature coffee roasts on some website, and ended up nearly ordering a t-shirt. Damn. I really should go buy that shirt. As far as what recorder to use, I think the Zoom's are good, but I agree about the controls. The performance of the dynamic mics thing doesn't bother me that much, but it is an issue, mainly because I use dynamics for podcasting. But it doesn't bother me as much as it bothers Julian Krause. :)

@@HiddenDriveways Not sure if you know this funny Fred Schneider Impro Game at Conan: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j53clmyAntahq7M :-) I've also been a B-52s fan since I was young. As a young teenager, I had an immortal crush on Kate Pierson. :-D I was at a concert here in Germany in 2012, which was unfortunately without Keith Strickland and was also very short with just over 50 minutes. I always done well with the DR-40 and also more relaxed with the noise floor. But since I am now also using some dynamic microphones, I will take a look at the H5 first. There are 60 € more in total, but maybe well laid out. I will tell.

@@gotopcpanik How it went?
@gotopcpanik4 жыл бұрын
@@mukisabogal6248 Good. The H5 is a very good recorder. One drawback: If you want to have A/B recording you have to buy the extra Microphones. The handling overall is not that good, as with the Tascam DR-40. But the H5 is much faster and more functions than the H4. I do not regret the purchase of the H5.

Is there a micro clipping on the recording ? Like a gate clipping as well ? Why ? Or is it clipping cuts in the postproduction?

The tascam DR40X is for a microphone, to do live on platforms such as KZbin, Facebook?
@HiddenDriveways4 жыл бұрын
It depends. If you're using it as a USB microphone for a computer that's streaming live, then yes. If you're plugging it into an iPhone and streaming live with the iPhone, then yes. But if you're streaming live with an Android phone, then no.

@@HiddenDriveways Why not with Android phone? Shouldn't it work with the right kind of a TRS to TRRS Adapter?
@HiddenDriveways4 жыл бұрын
@@hansmeier1608 I was referring to connecting the USB port of the DR-40X to an iPhone, which is supported. The same is not supported on Android. As far as doing it in the analog realm with the headphone output of the DR-40X and adapters, I don't know what will work. If you have the adapters, it's worth a try.
