Hey guys! It was nice to finally add a new type of final score to these videos! 😍 Back in October, 2023, I released a (nearly) 2-hour long video on Tony Hawk's Underground. I promised myself I wouldn't work like that again for a while...but then a month later, I started working on 3 videos of The Thing 😅😅😅 Amounting to 2 bloody hours! I guess I'm a sucker for punishment so please gimme some love! Like the vid and spread it! Up next is my long review of the 2002 game! Hope to see you there!

I saw The Thing when it first came out; I was 12. It scared and thrilled me in equal measure. A fantastic film that has stood the test of time. Awesome vid, Badger, as usual, you've knocked it out of the park! x

@@badger.phippsthey’re actually remaking the thing but blumhouse is doing it and they’re working with John carpenter himself

My head cannon for the Thing's origin is it's not technically an alien species but a sort of "virus", maybe developed by the aliens for good purposes (like cures for illnesses, re-growing lembs etc.) but it basically did like Skynet but with meat. The ship was trying to escape or something but didn't know the infection was on board & ended up crashing on earth. Or alien explorers picked up the "infection" on a different planet & as the original pilots were being consumed they crashed. Either way I don't think the Thing is what built & piloted the ship that crashed here. Also, I agree with you about Norris, I believe it's him being eaten from the inside, not heart problems.

"Skynet but with meat" - love that! 👌Yeah, interesting points. I like the idea of it being developed for good by aliens. Kinda like Frankenstein but in space lol The prequel had a deleted scene which tried to explain why the Thing came to Earth, but i'll talk about that in my review of the prequel 😃 Thanks for the candid comment!😎

Brilliant video essay mate.... My only request would be to get that big beautiful face of yours back on your videos 😁
@badger.phipps9 ай бұрын
Very kind, dude! Love that! And thanks for the encouragement too but me showing my face will never be a constant thing I do lol as confident as I am in front of the camera, it's a big pain in the butt for me lol loads of effort and more editing. Plus I need to get a much better camera one day. I will be showing my face in some vids here and there. But this style will be the main thing I do from now on :)

Looking forward to this. One of my favourite films and John carpenter’s best.

Pretty sure you're right that Norris was a slow infection and wasn't aware of it. They more or less say as much in the movie, when Norris is picked to be the leader of the group / carry the gun, and he turns it down. That was a very human response. The Thing would have definitely agreed to lead the group, given the position of power it'd have after that to continue its takeover.

Late to your channel as a fan but love these longer videos. Would love to see more deep dives like this. Especially with films you clearly love. Thanks for this great video.

Appreciate that! I did the same for Jeepers Creepers, if you're into that? And Vanilla Sky.

Actually to me both Childs and macready are both 100 percent human because it’s Kurt freaking Russell plus in his contract if you hire Kurt Russell for your movie he must always be the good guy and Childs is human because of his earring plus he has a flamethrower why would the thing carry something that it could kill it?

Loved your rating at the end!

One of the many scenes that resonated with me after all these years was the exchange between MacReady and Garry. Garry: "My God, what was happening to him?" MacReady: "If it had more time to finish, it would have looked and sounded and acted just like Bennings!" Garry: "I don't know what you're saying." MacReady: "That was one of those things out there trying to imitate him, Garry. C'mon." Garry: "MacReady, I know Bennings. I've known him for ten years. ...He's my friend." MacReady: "We gotta burn the rest of him" It was such a tragic and human moment. Donald Moffat conveyed the emotion of losing a dear friend perfectly. I have close friends that I've known since we were kids, and I would react the same. As hard as nails MacReady can be, even he paused for a moment to acknowledge Garry's sorrow. I also agree that Childs and MacReady were human as well. I always felt that in a sort of classic, John Carpenter kicks everyone in the ball's dooms day finale, we have two characters that we love, they survived the battle and war, they earned the victory, only to freeze to death! DAMN, Shakespeare shit! Fantastic review and I dig your content! You got my sub. Cheers and keep making more bro! 💯😎👍

Nauls didn't see Garry getting dragged away. That was a cutaway scene. BTW, the alien could reproduce the entire creature, so in human form it would have functioning lungs and yes, taste buds. Well done video. Subscribed
@badger.phipps8 ай бұрын
I'll have to disagree with you on the Nauls part. His face (to me) clearly shows him reacting to seeing Gary being dragged away. I'm positive he was actively searching for Gary after seeing that. But it's possible I'm wrong. Either way, thank you so much for the support and comment. The response I've had for my recent videos has been flattering :)

From what I remember, The Thing being virus-like with no real form wasn’t Bill Lancaster’s idea, but Rob Bottin’s. Original design by Dale Kuipers showed The Thing as this parasite creature that attaches to a victim’s head. Carpenter and co, had a great deal of trouble trying to figure out The Thing. Rob Bottin was brought in and pitched to John Carpenter that The Thing could look like anything. “It doesn’t look like one monster it looks like anything. Out of this horrid mass comes all the life forms from throughout the universe that The Thing has ever imitated.”

Recently watched it for the first time, and it's just as good as everyone said it was. I'm not normally a horror person unless it's something different like Alien. Even knowing basically everything going in I still had a great time.
