If you like it, then this is your franchise now. Have fun! *2.* I recently lost a good friend of mine in a motorcycle crash. It was really hard working on this video whilst dealing with that, so thank you for the lovely comments. It was worth all of the work to read them! *3.* I want to thank the trolls for all of the dehumanizing comments insulting me and my dead friend. I have no clue how a stranger not sharing your opinion on a movie can make you react that way, but I'm grateful for you! Not only do you prove my point (when I said that the Alien fanbase has become toxic like the Star Wars fanbase), but you're also helping my algorithm. *Please keep hating!* 😎

@@badger.phipps plenty of people you've labeled trolls (some who seem to just disagree with you) have had their own loved ones die on them, yet have felt no need to bring up those who've passed away while talking online about a science fiction movie franchise. I'm think your friend would likely not appreciate having their business injected into these youtube comments, because I know all of those I've lost would also not want this. That said, I'm sorry for your loss. It sounds like it was a really sudden and painful surprise. But assuming that these "trolls" haven't had even more personal losses than you have with your friend here is just wrong. I have never understood how anyone could proceed with the story when there was no way an egg could be on the Sulaco after the way Aliens ends. Every film after 3 I left the cinema in a foul mood with the rubbish I had paid to watch. After 3 every film is not really the Alien but the dna experiments of scientists. I just don't want to bother with Alien films anymore. Maybe we might get better in the future but I doubt it.

Am sorry about the passed away buddy. I hope you feeling better now. Reviews like these make me wonder if Ridley is genuinely a hack by this point. I just wanted to say, i had never felt so represented in a video before this, the "its not canon to me, so it doesn't bother me" angle to Prometheus and Covenant; the "Didn't like them but through not thinking of them as canon i appreciated the themes and ideas"; thinking the black goo represents the writers and producers; reading the novelizations and realizing Ridley Scott lived long enough to become the villain; and the star wars comparison: everything I have felt and the way it changed 2 weeks or so ago, you have put into words in ways i just couldn't do it. The problem is, I have now become toxic after too many disappointments. Im 25, I watched Aliens when I was 5. Knowing I might go most of my life without a good alien movie straight up hurts. While I realized whats to come for the franchise, people were celebrating Romulus and ut really feels like someone celebrating during a funeral. But you reminded me of something I decided myself years ago and somehow forgot after Romulus. I feel dumb for forgetting it now when I had come to this conclusion at 17: I am the one watching, im the one consuming the products/stories, and I decide whats canon. Ridley can be disrespectful to James Cameron's story, and James to the concept of Aluens ever fighting Predators, but I can just ignore what I don't like and move on with only the good. No one can force me to watch Romulus or think any of it makes sense and no one will, there is no need to consider it ever again. I don't need a good alien movie, Cold Forge and Into Charybdis exist. Alien Phalanx exists. And more good novels and comics will be made sooner or later, definitely faster than a movie. Thanks for this. I think I can move on now.

One of the few ppl who think about prometheus and covenant the way I do or see it. Prometheus is underrated minus having a few brain dead characters I appreciate what they were trying to do with giving more insight about the engineers and the black goo and what might of happened with the aliens on the particular planet etc.. Then covenant came along and had more stupid characters,making David the creator or playing a pivotal role in the creation of the aliens taking away the mystery and mystique of them and we got no more development or insight into the engineers also they killed shaw off screen to be experimented on. That movie could of destroyed the franchise and might still do because I was hoping they would acknowledge the black goo stuff slightly going forward and incorporate it into the universe better and discard the elements of covenant that really didn't work or took away the mystery of the aliens but once that fool ridley Scott is involved he will push this black goo more than the actual aliens. Another issue I have with ridley Scott is he hates the idea of the alien queen and any movie that he has been involved in he doesn't acknowledge the presence of the queen in the universe or I should say the queen doesn't exist once he is involved which is ridiculous because most of us were introduced into the alien universe through aliens and the queen is such a cool and bad ass addiction yet because one man doesn't like it, it's ignored...unbelievable. To add to the queen being sidelined by ridley Scott is in covenant its shown David made eggs without the queen,yes there was egg morphing in the first movie but again ridley tries to drive home no queen is needed by showing us David made his own eggs with no queen smh. Out of all the alien movies covenant is the worse,I hate that movies because it's the movie thay could and might kill this franchise if going forward events from that movie has to tie in to the grand story.. Because it's one thing to get a bad movie but when ideas or lore is introduced as cannon that was totally rejected by fans but now it's jus there going forward and has to be worked in..how are the movies going forward suppose to escape this

First of all, Cameron is what brought us the Queen. In the original film there was a deleted scene that got put back in with the new cut of the film they did for 2010 that has Ripley find Dallas and Brett. Brett is almost turned completely into a egg with Dallas beginning the process. There was music cues meant to be in the first film like when Kane went into the egg chamber that hinted that is what happened to the rest of the Jockey crew got turned into eggs by the creature. But Ridley changed all the music and sounds that Jerry Goldsmith had specifically wrote for the original film around and that hint was lost and with the scene taken out it left room for Cameron to create the queen. 2nd, it was Alverez who decided to bring Iam Holm (his likeless anyway) back. He said it in many interviews. He said it was not fair David and Bishop got to come back but Ash never did. So it was him who decided to put Iam Holm likeness into the film. Apparently Ridely was kinda against it thinking it was morbid. But Alverz insisted apparently from the interviews I read.

Interesting thoughts, but I read VARIOUS sources stating that Ridley Scott was the one who forced Ian Holm into the film. Who knows. I could be wrong.

Turning a human (or other animal) into an egg has no precedent in nature. It doesn't make any sense. They can be used as a host of a parasite, in the way the face huggers work, but not to transmogrify the whole body into an egg-machine.
@LUCKO20222 ай бұрын
@badger.phipps It was Alverz. There has been numerous video interviews where he said it wasn't fair that Bishop and David got to come back but Ash didn't. So he reached out to Holm estate and got them to put his likeness in Romulus.

Late response here... this video just came up on my feed and I felt compelled to watch because I'm in agreement with your statement. Along with STAR WARS, ALIEN is one of my absolute favorite movies, and I'm not even a horror fan. I'm a sci-fi fan who was attracted by the art and concept. Hell, these movies inspired me to become a professional illustrator, they're both that pivotal in my life. But, after so many years, I feel as if I've outgrown these movies, like having favorite clothes I can longer fit. I keep them out of a desire to be able to fit them again but after a while I concede that's never going to happen and I have to toss them into the garbage or donate them to someone else. I will always treasure the original movies, but I see little reason to continue supporting Hollywood with my bucks if I keep feeling like I'm being played ad nauseum, walking out of theaters in disappointment and confusion. If something no longer serves me, I let it go. And about the trolls, I've been getting that too and I don't understand why people have to be that way.
@badger.phipps2 ай бұрын
Damn. I'm sorry you share my pain. But I love the analogy of comparing these flicks to clothes! Thank you for the kind words!
@hendrsb332 ай бұрын
@@badger.phipps Actually, no need to be sorry. I'm constructively disappointed but not devastated by it. I think it's an inevitability that we give up what we've outgrown and I've been working on creating my own stories. I figure if I don't like what I've been seeing in movies, I'd better put up or shut up and create my own stories based on what I like to see. I'm not sure yet how I will release them or if I will. If I do, I would do it online. I think we've let personal creativity get away from us and we increasingly have to rely on the creativity of others. In this case, the movies we're seeing are what the filmmakers and producers think audiences want (fan service) or they give us what they like in a story and it doesn't satisfy us. Either way, many of us feel cheated and not everyone understands or are able to articulate why. They just know they feel cheated. I know I did. With each sequel, I felt I had lost Luke and Leia and Ripley and Indy and the Ghostbusters and all these other characters I've loved since childhood. But I do own copies of all the original movies that introduced them to me, so I go back to them occasionally to feel as least some of the original thrill I felt when I first saw them. I've come to understand filmmakers are human; they can't be expected to please everyone and the industry they work in is a powerful economic force that constantly has to feed itself from the movies they grind out. I've worked in comics, commercials, gaming and animation, so I very well have been there and understand what it's about. We can't all make movies, but I think we can learn to write and create in our own unique ways. I've finally come to terms with that having to be my path. So far, it ain't easy but it's been fun. What you and others do in the form of these videos is creativity in action, so I take heart from that. Thanks for putting this out, man! You seem like a guy who'd be cool to hang out in a coffee shop or a pub and talk with about movies for hours. Subscribed. P.S. Hi, so I'm quite new to the franchise but I wanted to say, I took it as the black "goo" substance in Romulus, as well as the offspring looking vaguely engineer-like, was more of a "call back" to Prometheus in the same sense that the film also referred back to the original 4 films as well, whether it be dialog or visuals. There's even the "save" phones from Isolation on the wall. Something tells me Romulus was never intended to be a permanent hitch to the Alien canon, but more of a "let's take the most memorable aspects of the previous films and intertwine them into one while giving the audience one hell of a thrill ride". Equal balance of nostalgia and newness. I feel it was a pretty good film as it is. I *fully* understand your frustration with not just returning to franchise roots and answering long standing questions, I myself feel this way about my favorite franchise Tomb Raider, constantly getting rebooted into something worse every 3 games. But I think there's enough incentive behind Romulus to sense that it was just supposed to be a fun Alien film and that's all. Lore aside, it really did go back to its roots and played out what we all wanted to see, a crew on a spaceship getting picked off by a xeno lol. Of course there are right and wrong ways to do it, but there's so much effort behind keeping the retro-futuristic tech aesthetic, and the effort that went into using practical effects. As a new viewer, it holds up as the most similar to the original, despite Ripley not being there. The formula and setting feels quite proper for the franchise. Just wanted to throw my few pennies out there to see how you feel about my views of it. But really great video, thank you for taking the time to discuss the topic and pointing out the very obvious issues in timeline and canon consistency!

I agree that the practical effects and retro look were wonderful! And although I see where you're coming from, I definitely can't see the offspring as just a "call back". All the people behind the scenes have explained it and it just makes no sense to me. But I'm glad you enjoyed the movie so much and stuck with the video! Much appreciated! PS Interesting comparison to Tomb Raider!

I completely agree with a lot of what you said. But I am also one to consider the "we want xenomorphs" critique of prometheus is an oversimplification of the real problems. It also got way too much attention, overshadowing everything else. Prometheus was a problem because there is barely any of the DNA from the originals. The tech and visuals feels too different, the retconned space jockey, the missing biomechanical aesthetics, the overall lore building turned a cosmic horror into alien fantasy cliches (grey-aliens angry at humans for destroying nature etc). This lead to covenant, where none of these problems are given attention. Instead they slap in xenomorphs in the sequel, and applied the problems I mentioned on them. (I laughed when I saw a behind the scene video where the VFX team of Covenant told Adam Savage that the organic design of the xenomorph is more "evolved". Seriously? the biomechanical aesthetic that inspired countless copycats and became a staple in anime creature designs, is visually less evolved? Is this Ridley's "instruction" or just the VFX team misunderstanding of the franchise?

The problem with Prometheus is that it was not intended to be part of the Alien series. It was meant to take place in the same universe but be a completely side series spin off. It was the studio that messed with the film demanding it connect to Alien and that is why it is a mess. Then when it when it came time for the sequel the studio really stepped in and made it more of a Alien film. If they would have let Ridley do what he wanted it would have turned out so much better. But it was the studios dime and boardroom exec on think with numbers and aren't creatives.

The characters are flat and forgettable. The writing for them is nonexistent most of the time. The acting is completely dispassionate... or talentless, however you want to look at it. I can remember Call and Johner from Resurrection. I can remember Shaw, Vickers, Daniels and Tennessee. But i cant remember any of the s*** characters in Romulus. The fan service is completely inappropriate for a serious Alien film. Not even Resurrection stooped so low as to directly quote better, better movies in the franchise. As a fan, the "Get away from her you b****" line was completely insulting. How or why would they try to cheapen Ripleys glorious moment in Aliens?? This is how i rank the franchise: Aliens 10/10 Alien 9.5/10 Prometheus 8/10 Alien Covenant 7/10 Alien Resurrection 6.5/10 AVP 6/10 Alien Romulus 6/10 Alien 3 2/10 AVP: Requiem 1/10

The annoying things for me were repeating lines verbatim and copying scenes with reactions from a slight groan to WTF come the last act. Smoker will simply quit smoking, something they’re probably doing every day and just stop doing that. Drinker will just stop drinking. But when you quit the Alien-franchise, what does that mean? Stop watching the movies? Even the first two? Never watch them again? Never talk about them? Because they’re a part of the franchise you’re “quitting”… Or do you mean that you won’t watch any of the coming movies or the coming TV-series? Don’t know why, but I have a hard time believing that. For someone to make a video like this the love for the franchise has to be pretty strong. Even though some of the last movies failed you, I’m guessing you still have a lot of love for the franchise. As I stated toward the end of the video, I highly doubt I'll be checking out the future movies and TV shows. But if I ever do and I review them, it will only be out of morbid curiosity. My heart will not be in it. 3. You may doubt I won't watch the upcoming stuff, but trust me, I've done this before. I've barely touched new Star Wars stuff after Rise of Skywalker! You just stop watching the new films and stuff. I have done it with Star Wars. I refuse to touch anything past Return of the Jedi outside of Force Awakens (not because I wanted to with that film, I only saw it due to circumstances way beyond my control. It is a long story). There IS no sequel trilogy. Rogue One does not exist for me. Mandalorian, Ashoka, Obi Wan, Acolyte and anything else Disney does with it, I don't accept their existence and refuse to participate. I have had people try and get me to watch modern Star Wars and I refuse. There is 6 episodes and that is it. I don't even want to touch on Clone Wars either despite me having no choice but to accept their canon (as Lucas was involved with the show, sadly). I am done with Star Wars. It gets even worse because the new Alien earth TV series coming next year takes place 30 before the original Alien 1979. It will also retcon both Prometheus and covenant apparently. They have totally dismantled the lore established in first and second classic movies. The idea of the xenomorph and fossilised alien on LV-426 origins being ancient, unknowable and mysterious added so much to the mythos and that is gone forever. RiP Alien franchise 1979-1986. I got two words for you: Damon Lindelof. I struggle to think of a screenwriter I despise more. Not because he’s universally horrible, but because he’s good at creating interesting concepts, and quite terrible at developing those concepts in a truly satisfying way. To me, his involvement, combined with Ridley Scott losing just about all of his edge, explains entirely how Prometheus shit the bed so badly, and how the subsequent attempts to make it make sense are totally hollow and fall flat. The original concept was never properly developed, so none of the retroactive explanations work. Edit: I do want to say, that despite the similarities, Romulus is a much, MUCH more competent film than Rise of Skywalker. However, your observation of the parallels is dead on, very eye opening.

I actually wish I mentioned him when talking about Prometheus. My issues with it were EXACTLY the same as my issues with Lost. Lindelof is good at starting mysteries with no clear direction in mind. Knowing Hawley's TV series work, I'm betting Alien Earth will be a quirky but effective series, he knows how to build characters and tension...I'm one of those weirdos who actually kind of loves Resurrection, mainly because it's such a mess, and the lab of Ripley horrors is worth the price of admission, let alone the crazy cast and very slimy Aliens. Jeunet at least had a fresh vision. The downside was the hybrid, much like in Romulus, is it's weakest moment...in fact i dont think ANYONE, in or outside comic books has EVER expanded the original Giger vision as effectively and convincingly as Cameron did with the Queen. The designs all lack a fundamental imagination, something Giger had in bucketloads. His art was never afraid to confront and astonish. That's the miracle of Alien, and something Hollywood is completely incapable of embracing...well apart from Cameron

I see what u mean with the disney comparison. Theres no point in scrapping everything the last movie set up but this franchise wasnt like disney at the time now it is but its harder to compare it to star wars. Star wars, they knew they wanted a trilogy that would come out pretty fast. The alien franchise was on the edge of being put on hypersleep after each movie came out and no one i know in real life talks much about alien. With each new entry it made me feel lucky the franchise was still relevant. I liked prometheus but even though it was pretty successful they tried to please the fans with covenant, a more run of the mill horror but i got excited to see what david would do, he was so fun to watch. The offspring was sopposed to evovle into an normal xeno but stopping at the offsping engineer form works for me. I would have a lot less excitement for the black goo if it turned full xeno. So it keeps it vague and it is a silly plot device that is getting old but i wouldnt mind if we got a bunch of answers and wrapped up the black goo saga once and for all or maybe they will just stop using it in future movies. Plus hickman is writing aliens vs avengers right now nd its pretty good so far. Theres no black goo so far, they're using queens.

There was never a need for the backstory of where the Aliens originated. This whole smoke screen has been developed and driven by Fox and short arse Scott. The beginning was the start of this travesty with Romulus, and the end was the death.... Disney wanted another reset, just like the lame and dreadful The Force Awakens, which served as a vomit induced plate of sick. Romulus will do exactly the same. Serve up the same slop so Fox/Disney can finish off the franchise and run it into the ground. The only people turned on by Romulus are those who just want 'another alien film' that might look flashy but is significantly bland and devoid of anything remotely identifiable of the past and the production design looks asthestically pleasing. For me, Alien ended in 1992. As much as I don't like Alien 3, the movie has a downbeat ending that satisfies my thoughts, even though Blomkamp's Alien 5 had the possible ending that the Alien franchise probably needed, but the studio executive's didn't want, because Fox were more interested in prolonging the franchise for nefarious reasons....
@LUCKO20222 ай бұрын
Scott didn't want to do another Alien film. Prometheus was supposed to be a spin off film set in the same universe but explore different themes and explore the Space Jockey. The sequels to Prometheus was suppose to go even further away from Alien. The studio interfered and that is how we got to this point. Look at The Thing prequel and how shit it turned out to be. It started with good intentions, but studio meddling, like with Alien 3 as well also ruined those films. It is a tale as old as Hollywood itself. This is why Lucas funded each of the 5 other Star Wars films himself as then he could do whatever he wanted with no interference.
@dr.impossibleofcounterpunc19842 ай бұрын
@LUCKO2022 Yes, I know. Quite honestly, these days, I couldn't give a shit about what came before. Hollywood has spun enough spells and ruined past franchises for either identity driven plot devices or used prequels to mess up the structure of what went before. It's all about destroying the old to bring in the new. The new is about pushing social agendas to the forefront and wrecking what went before... I'm happy with just Alien, Aliens and Alien 3 The same is true with the Terminator up to the third film, and also starwars with prequels and the original trilogy. You just imagine what came after never existed.... Problem solved... 😆

Right! As Bret would have interjected! LOL :D As far as I am concerned the Alien franchise ended in a trilogy, and Alien 3 was the last. It's been a fast downhill slide ever since. R. Scott had fouled the franchise beyond recognition. He should never have come back to it after he turned his back on it in 1979. The worst part was not just the mediocrity of what had followed, but the unashamed copy-and-paste bullshit about human origins (copied from 2001:A Space Odyssey); and the black goo? Did you think this was original? No, it was another shameless copy-and-paste from the X-Files. Sure, the Alien was 'cooked'. But he should have hired halfdecent Sci-Fi authors and script writers if he wanted to 'expand the lore' of the Alien in his prequels. The genre definition of Sci-Fi is Science Fiction. None of the trash we got since qualifies as either relating to science or fiction as we know it, let a lone as a science fiction movie! It's an insult to the Alien fandome and an insult to the genre. The problem with Prometheus is that Ridley fully intended to answer all the questions and eventually link it to Alien. It was meant to be more of a spin off series kinda like how Cobra Kai is to the Karate Kid films. The problem is the studio aka Fox and the boardroom execs don't think like creatives. They just think numbers. They saw the backlash from Prometheus (which was their fault as the Alien stuff was forced into the film by them in the first place) and panicked so they tried to course correct thus fucking up Ridley true vision of where he wanted to go with the series. Hollywood is just like that.
