This film was incredible and very sad. To not award an award seems to speak to our society. No one likes to look at themselves and by looking at himself, Jim Carrey taught us to look inside and identify with him. A noteworthy film.

I like talking about this movie because, as you said, you found it “very sad”. Yet many others I’ve spoken to find it to be extremely hopeful, as Truman beat his fears and phobias and walked out of his comfort zone. The thing is, I do t think either view is wrong. It’s very interesting.

This film is a perfect allegory for enlightenment/ self-realization. Just like self-inquiry, when you question everything, you find out what is real and what are merely concepts. By staying single pointed, he was able to push through to find the truth. He wanted to find out more than anything else. He kept the burning desire that is required to go all the way without being distracted by the illusion. It’s a masterpiece.

the first time I watched this film I was totally terrified by the plot. It's insane. Truman had no say - his life was controlled right from birth. What a film! It's intriguing, terrifying, bewildering and brilliant!

Without the horrible part of being part of reality show, it rings true to a lot of aspects of our society nowadays and people conform to what it would be scary to think of back then: To showcase your life daily on social media, as episodes from a show To buy things influencers online suggest (after showing their lives) Most people performing an act The one person who dares to tell the truth is labeled as crazy Imposed false constructed fears that in the end control peoples decisions like where they put their vote Etc.

In an in-universe behind the scenes look at the Truman show, his 'best friend' Marlon talks about how when he was added to the show, he wasn't told either. In his eyes his mom took him to a new town, brought him to a new school, pointed to Truman and said "go play with that boy". At least initially, none of the children were allowed to know it seems for the very reason you say. I suspect at some point they are told, given a bunch of money as compensation (since they're working actors) and then threatened with lawsuit (or their parents are threatened). Fear is a convincing motivator to do things we may not truly believe is right, especially if we can justify it by saying "oh, well Christof is the really bad guy", or "hey, I'm just as trapped in this as him, and I'm just following orders".

I only recently got around to watching. Serendipitously I wound up getting hit closer to home than I thought. I'm glad that Jim Carrey won the Golden Globe for this and that Ed Harris was nominated for best supporting actor - I wish he had won as he was great in the movie as well. There is a measure of luck involved in winning an award as it depends on that year's competition and you also have to consider that a lot of truly great movies take years to be fully recognized. And the movies that do win Best Picture are often viewed later as inferior. I remember seeing The Truman Show at the theatre and really liking it. But, I don't think I would have said it was a truly great movie at that time. Years later I changed my mind. I now consider it one of the top twenty best movies I've ever seen.
@SpaghettiYOLOKing11 ай бұрын
It doesn't just depend on competition. Studio producers actively lobby and basically kiss ass Academy voters or even outright try to bribe certain voters to give their film nominations and ultimately the award. Harvey Weinstein is the guy that created the blueprint for this method of getting awards, a blueprint that is used to this day. And it was actually that same year, the 1999 Academy Awards, that he did his most aggressive lobbying and it paid off as Shakespeare in Love cleaned house at the Oscars, even beating Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture. In my opinion, studios should not be allowed to lobby or have knowledge of who the Academy members are. They can submit their films for consideration in the award categories they feel they did the best in and that's it.

The Truman Show, is great. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind is another awesome character for Jim Carrey. It's a bummer sometimes when genuine talent isn't taken as seriously in a character simply because of massive talent in another. Others might disagree with that, and that's the beauty of opinion, but in my opinion he had really good quality in other, more serious parts. Its hard to look past memories and feelings geared towards the talent that a star contributes to you in something from before. His skill in his specific niche is just so finely sharpened I guess.. Love this dude ..

I don’t know how to feel about this movie because all the orphans and fatherless that I know of have lived and have to live very very hard lives some never recover some don’t live long at all Perhaps from the eyes of a person being recorded or followed it looks very different, it’s clear to see why he ( Trueman) would want the challenges of a real marriage, real love conquers All.

Jeez, it was the best film that year and it has become a cult and the best mirror of our society. Why didn't he win the Oscar for best actor? He deserved it but the Oscars are always a disappointment for Cinephiles. They understand nothing about the arts but everything abt money and politics. That's how foreigners never get an Oscar, and how undeserving films and actors (WS-2022) get the overrated award. It used to mean something, not anymore.

What people don’t realize, is this movie is showing you that we all live inside a dome (the firmament created by god) and our lives, even though they are our own, are actually run by people we never even see. (The government). They show you so many truths in this movie and no one even notices. Like the moon being a luminary and not a physical surface. Becuase as anyone who reads their Bible knows, the moon is not a rock we can fly to, it’s one of two light sources created by God in the book of Genesis…one is the moon and the other is the sun. Later in the movie Truman starts to realize the (government) is lying to him and seeks to find the truth. He reaches the end of the dome and finally realizes everything he was ever told his entire life by the people in power was a lie, and he finally sees the light. And that light is the word of god that’s been right I;front of our faces for thousands of years but most of us just believe everything the school systems and government tell us without question 😢

It should not surprise or upset Mr. Carrey or anyone else that Jim never got an Oscar. After all, as he demonstrated in The Truman Show "it's ALL FAKE!" There is an ultimate Reality outside of this fake life we're living - an Eternal Reality where "oscars" and such don't matter and we don't care about stuff like that. I would think that movies like this would drive people to the Bible, but that does not seem to be the case. However, Jim's spiritual roots are showing and maybe ... maybe .....

I have what I assume is a minority viewpoint on The Truman Show. I'm not saying that Truman's life was good and that I would want to be him, but then, I'm not saying his life was all that bad. He lived in a world where the weather was always perfect, people were friendly and he didn't have to worry about basic necessities. If I were to defend Cristof I believe I could make the argument he gave Truman a pretty good life. One thing you have to wonder is will Truman ever look back? Will he get out in the real world and grow weary of it......will he think back to the life he had and long for it? It is easy to dismiss this and say no way, but is that real life? I suppose it depends on exactly what happens to Truman on the outside, but I could certainly imagine him one day wishing he were back in the world of The Show.
