Chariots figure prominently in the Rigveda, evidencing their presence in India in the 2nd millennium BCE. Notably, the Rigveda differentiates between the Ratha (chariot) and the Anas (often translated as "cart"). Rigvedic chariots are described as made of the wood of Salmali (RV 10.85.20), Khadira and Simsapa (RV 3.53.19) trees. While the number of wheels varies, chariot measurements for each configuration are found in the Shulba Sutras.

Kinda depends on the civilization in question for Egypt it was a light mobile archer platform to Herass the enemy and be superior in chariot on chariot this is evident because an award for brave charioteers was a necklace with gold flies on it for chariots who got uncomfortablebly close to the enemy front line and survived. The hittites had heavier three man chariots that were used like heavy cavalry at kadesh a force of about 500 hittite chariots steam rolled an entire division of the egyptian army but when they attacked the camp the Egyptians used their superior mobility to fight them off. Chariots were barely used in the aegean areas of Greece and Crete as anything more the glorified taxis to ferry kings and warriors. This is actually attested to in Homer's illiad and they didn't constitute an elite army corps like with the Egyptians and hittites the vast majority of bronze age civilizations fall somewhere along these lines depending on things like terrain and resources at hand chariots were expensive so it was the domain of kings, nobles and distinguished warriors who could afford all the equipment and horses and logistics to take care of it all along with weapons and armor.

Now I'm curious as to why chariots died out as a method of ancient warfare. I know they were eventually replaced by mounted horse archers, but why? Were the mounted archers more maneuverable? Were they "cheaper" to produce since you only needed 1 man and 1 horse as compared to 2 men, 2 horses AND a chariot? Or was it (as I suspect), horse archers can function on a greater variety of terrain than chariots can? Chariots would have difficulty traversing forests or wetlands, for instance.
@babachloe71404 жыл бұрын
Its most definitely the maneuverability factor. Plus the additional costs of building and maintaining the actual chariot.
@freakystyle19964 жыл бұрын
Chariots were used because 3000 years ago no horse breeds existed that could hold a fully armed man on its back. Horses were smaller, no larger than ponies. Chariots became obsolete as larger horses that allowed warriors to ride them were bred, as they were incredibly expensive to both build and upkeep.

If all chariots can do is shoot arrows I just don't see how that is better than foot archers? It's a massive target and there's no way the archer on a moving chariot is going to be more accurate than on stable ground. And if any of the horses/driver/archer on it gets hit then it's instantly disarmed or even lost altogether. Maybe it's only used against melee infantry?
@Hosheyakozilla3 ай бұрын
Same logic as the later horse-archer: chariot-borne archers are swifter and more mobile than foot archers. This allowed them to more readily exploit weak-points in enemy lines and close the distance to deliver more accurate shots before withdrawing (to prevent, as you said being made an easy target). They were also useful, at least in some capacity, for deploying small yet mobile contingents of infantry. Keep in mind that the chariot's heyday was the early Bronze Age, a time in which warfare (with some exceptions) was less organized than later periods. You would generally see a greater struggle on the part of commander's to counter them quickly. Furthermore, cavalry wasn't a thing in most of the world at the time of the chariots. Stirrups, canted saddles, spurs and horse breeds large enough to wear armor and carry a rider were uncommon, so chariots effectively performed the role of later horsemen. It is with advancements in cavalry that the chariot became, mostly, obsolete, as good cavalry was faster (e.g good at running down charioteers), cheaper and more agile at turning and traversing rough terrain - essentially better in everyway. Furthermore, contrary to what the video says not all chariots were glorified archer-platforms. Examples, such as the famed Persian scythed chariots did exist and were designed to plow into or scatter infantry, though these came about largely after the variant shown in the video had been made obsolete by cavalry. The success of scythed chariots against well-drilled infantry is also mixed, despite their frequent usage by the Persians. While Xenophon describes Persian chariots working well in coordination with cavalry (e.g breaking up infantry formations so cavalry could run them down), their lacking agility left them vulnerable to being encircle by infantry well-trained enough to part ranks against the initial charge. Ultimately, the chariot worked best when cavalry wasn't a thing and it was the only option for a mobile shock unit.

It is absolutely not true that the whole point of the chariot was to 'put an archer on the battlefield'. I'm sensing a bit of Britannic-bias here; as a British historian of course he will be aware of the tactical viability of the bow and arrow, but that does not mean that is the same way armies of other civilizations operated. One thing I should point out first is that riding horses mounted on their back is something that was very rare back during the hay-day of the chariot, during the Bronze Age. That is not to say it was never done, but in all likeliness the myth's surrounding centaurs may well have originated from ancient Greeks encountering groups of warriors who mounted cavalry the way we are familiar with today. So yeah, basically all major armies at this time were using chariots instead of riding on horseback, though the chariots most likely fulfilled a role similar to that of cavalry in Medieval and Renaissance warfare. I will say that chariots in this era absolutely had archers riding on them, and in some cases that was exclusive; specifically with the case of Egypt, we saw warriors (typically from royalty) using what are referred to as 'skirmish chariots'. Meaning their main purpose was to facilitate the archer and retreat when it got too close to melee infantry. There were, however, more traditional cavalry uses for chariots as well, especially in the Hittite army; this is to say thousands of heavy chariots armed with swords, spears, bows and javelins which were used to charge into the enemy ranks and either trample them to death or cause as much mayhem as physically possible before retreating and organizing another charge. This is the traditional use of 'shock cavalry' or 'heavy cavalry' which a lot of people apparently don't think existed because it 'defies logic' but it is pretty well documented throughout written history and it was undoubtedly used in pre-history as well.

Absolute rubbish. The archer often had the reins wrapped around his middle, preventing any such cross car movement, which, anyway, at the gallop would be highly dangerous. Furthermore, the other crew member would be wielding a shield. This is shoddy research and a very poor presentation of the effectiveness of chariot archery. Plus the nearness to the target made this chariot crew vulnerable to enemy bowshot.

All of that fake Tony Robbins meets Smithsonian Channel fake energy and enthusiasm is unfortunate, unnecessary and distracting drama. More appropriate to fake chef dramas.

He appeared to be going 5 mph. Try a full gallop 20-40 mph. Also the mangolians didn’t use chariots….they could control the horse with their legs…and use bow arrow …much better method.
