Holes are hard to climb out of but in order to do it. a person has to have a plan and be ready and willing to make the sacrifices needed to make it happen. In most cases, there are addiction problems or mental problems that leads people to reject help. In cases where people have children, there is help, but we don't do any favors by creating a woke society where women are told they don't need men or intact families to raise their kids. It's much easier to avoid putting oneself in a hole than to have to climb out of it but even though we have compulsory education in every crack and corner of America, we don't even teach basic life skills in school. Education has been run by progressives for at least the last fifty years. They spend far too much time on progressive indoctrination and far too little time in preparing people for life. Even when you mention going back to school, that far too often involves spending four or six years trying to get a degree in a useless 'progressive' degree like women's studies or black studies that just makes the person hate the world rather than teaching them how to succeed in the world. There are currently more jobs available than workers. The best education for the poor is just to work and learn a skill or a trade, learn how to start a small business on the side to supplement income that could eventually grow into a very profitable life, and to learn how to invest so that a person's money is working for them even while they sleep. The most important lesson to learn is good habits that keep people out of trouble, hopefully before they get into trouble. In the end, there is no way to save most people who don;t want to save themselves. There are also other unintended consequences that result, both for the people who are supposedly being saved but also for a society that starts losing a standard reward system. When progressive mayors start putting homeless into hotels, many more homeless people show up to be saved. And why wouldn't they if they are also struggling with no plan of how to work their way out of the hole they are in. Once they are in the system, it is no different since they will lose more than they can gain by trying to climb the ladder. But someone has to pay for the growing welfare rolls through higher costs on everything that consumers buy. Who makes up the biggest part of the consumer base? The middle class. That is why the middle class begins to disappear in a Marxist society, along with all the graft and corruption and inefficiencies that occur in government bureaucracies. The point isn't to argue why people shouldn't care. The point is to shift toward what works to lift the poor in a society instead of devolving into a deeper and deeper welfare state where the citizenry gets poorer and weaker and more dependent as the bureaucracy gains all the money and power and control and ownership.

I would say that a part of it is the "american tradition" of non-inherited property. Every generation has to essentially start over again from their parents. I've seen it happen. parents own property, then either reverse mortgage it or sell off to retire at a leased condo. Kids maybe get some money after the fed takes death taxes. Hey there! I am an international student from the Czech Republic who has been living in the US for past 11 months. In such a short amount of time I realized how broken the system is. I cannot imagine staying and living here. I am convinced that the power is in hands of a few rich people who pull the strings. And the more rich you are, the less you realize there IS a problem and the easier it is to ignore it. Many people asked me after my exchange program ended: "So, why haven't you ever gone to eat out with us?" or "Have you been to this fabulous (expensive) restaurant yet??" No, I haven't. I have been to Panda Express once, and a handful of times I visited McDonald's when I didn't have time to cook at university dorms. And then they proceed to tell you how disgusting it is to be eating fastfood and I should get some REAL food. Great! Give me 20 000 $ and I am dining with you! :D Take this just as an example of the absurdity. Daily struggles of poor people in the US are undeniably several times worse. You don't have insurance? Voters are extremely divided, so Congress is extremely divided. This dooms federal legislation to address poverty (which imo is what needs to be done). At the state and local levels, the wealthy (even the dems) are not willing to make sacrifices to address poverty, and frankly many states are too poor to even fund their own programs to do so. Poverty is something every dem voter pontificates about, but none are willing to actually solve if it means a reduction in their property values, school funding, or anything else they care about. Candidates are chosen by voters. Wealthy voters vote more and advocate for their interests more. They have more time and resources to play the game. The politics in this country are not ran by big businesses, and there's not even an argument you can make for that unless the legislation directly impacts their businesses (ie taxes and regulations). In fact, businesses would love it if poverty were reduced because poor folks HAVE to spend their money. They do not sit in massive wads of cash. They spend. The real question is whether increased spending for poor folks accompanies an increase in the tax burden on big businesses, and this is where the question gets far more complex. However, these two things do not always have to go together, and state governments are a great example of that, considering how many of them have literally no income tax.

I know because I'm one of them. Many of my friends are too. Adding around $60 a month and then taking most of our food stamps away doesn't add up. It leaves us poorer than we were. When they talked about senior citizens at 11:28, I was shocked at how they made it seem as if the elderly have made great gains economically. I dont know too many seniors that are doing "well" and dont need assistance from anyone else. It will only get worse as they keep raising the age for retirement and leaving a donut hole gap from the age these companies are forcing early retirement. Its insane. It will be even worse when millennials become senior citizens. All of the government programs we pay into, most likely will be non existent like social security and medicaid. They will have some silly excuse but it will add to the homelessness and poverty amongst seniors. Add to the fact that we dont have the basics we need by middle age and the government will be forced to contend with this level of poverty that will be untennable for the country.

When people are suffering and have enough resources for an immediate amelioration of that suffering (drinking, smoking, dining out as you say) they'll take it. They don't believe in a way out. Orwell noted this in his Road to Wigan Pier on the poor financial and dietary preference of the working poor, it's also been noted by economists who constructed the perfect diet for people in developing countries who could actually afford sufficient nutrition and calories but refused to follow it. I'm currently on disability and I was homeless at one point while waiting for it to be approved. Things are rough out there and poverty really, really hurts. If you aren't born into wealth in this country, you are one health issue or one bad situation away from living on the streets. The wages are still so low that even full time workers live paycheck to paycheck and are never truly able to build wealth themselves. Everything about our system feels helpless, like you are perpetually swimming upstream. It doesn't have to be like this - we see so many examples of other countries taking better care of their citizens and it works well when done right. Things simply can't go on like this. Most of our biggest issues we face today can be traced back to poverty. Hell, crime itself is linked to poverty. All of this should be a no-brainer - we need to take care of our people so that we can continue to thrive as a country. What's it going to take? Another depression? Congressmen dying off? I did everything right: joined the military, went to college, and grad school. I even relocated across the country twice for better career opportunities. After $80k in student loans, it’s still tough finding a job. The most I ever made was $70k/annually a couple years ago. I’m a business major and ventured into the IT industry to troubleshoot accounting software. Biggest mistake I ever made. That job was very stressful and the cookie-cut training didn’t provide solutions to clients’ unique problems. I was told to research, research & research. Then, be criticized later for taking too long. I was eventually terminated and haven’t found the same pay since. My wife is barely holding down the bills while I constantly apply to jobs. A degree is simply not enough. Now, employers want certifications which also cost money that I don’t have. I no longer think the US is the richest country in the world. It’s definitely not the most equitable after investing so much in education.

The EU, as a whole, has a larger economy than the US (technically the world's largest). The Europeans are MORE than capable of providing for themselves; they just don't need to because we've done it for them for the past 75 years, and it's easy to be lazy when someone else does everything for you, so naturally they just continue the status quo. We could cut them off tomorrow and the Germans, French, and British would find ways to reinforce their defenses sufficiently, and faster than most people realize. In Finland, you have people who live in poverty as well because of various reasons... but they're guaranteed a home and food and electricity by the state. If you are homeless, and go days without eating in Finland, you've really effed up your circumstances for some reason. In USA, people are just left behind if going gets rough. 100% I was lucky and moved from my area of the UK (high poverty, not much opportunity) to a different one for a software engineering apprenticeship. I got paid to learn, did not require any degree or education beforehand and I was able to afford to rent a room. I have since completed my apprenticeship and now earn double the amount I was hired on and have so much room for growth. I’m in the military. Currently working 3 jobs. No kids, no spouse, no help from family & friends and I’m barely making it. I’d be lucky if only 1 of my major bills is 2 months behind vs having 3 or 4 major bills that are months behind. It’s like we’re punished & heavily taxed for choosing NOT to have kids, but when ppl see single ppl they think “we’re living the life.” We absolutely are not. EVERY SINGLE financial obligation falls solely on us. Imagine all the bills you have to pay, now imagine paying them SOLELY by yourself with no assistance from a spouse or family. It’s hell out here. And before ppl like to generalize, no the majority of us aren’t out here making stupid large purchases like boats & mustangs-most of us are living below our means & paycheck to paycheck with AT LEAST 1 outside job outside the military. Their labor hasn't changed a bit. Everything went up anyways despite no change in the minimum wage and money places. The lack of change of the minimum wage has caused a lot of middle wage jobs to pay out less which is why companies continue to log record profits. A caretaker of the elderly or infirmed shouldn't be $15 an hour but hey, don't complain! It's double the minimum wage.

If you tip at restaurants then you are contributing to this low hourly wage system. I don't tip, and I don't believe in that outdated system. Japan has the right idea when it comes to this. I also don't believe in minimum wage, because no one is forcing anyone to accept these wages for their labor. You determine how much your labor is worth and it's up to you to negotiate with an employer to find out how much they value your labor. If you don't like what they offer you are free to walk away.

My mom had similar back in the late 80s. She had my brother when I was 21. It was just her alone taking care of him as his dad had a mental illness that he would not take care of, and sometimes would get hospitalized, and she wanted none of that around my brother. My brother was often getting ill so she had to leave work for a few years. She got on assistance but when she went to go back to work, her gap in work made it hard to get a job, and only part time jobs were offered. But if she took those she would lose much of her assistance and make less than if she stayed on assistance. And they counted my income as household income so that made me move out so she wasn't penalized. It can be a tough system to break out of when you want to. She luckily found a place that needed someone full time and liked her past experiences, and didn't care about her gap in work time.

Whats required is structural changes to how america does business. A housing market that doesnt reward commercializing homes. Homes that structually provide most of a homeowners basic needs and a tax system that isnt designed to price people out of basic necessities over time. The entire social structure of the us is anti-people, and anti-family. The market is forcing people far from natural social safety nets and robbing older generations of the wealth they'd typically use to aid younger families, through rapidly increasing taxes on property and insane medical costs. As somebody who was homeless living in my car for 5 years while working full-time jobs, I would oftentimes see other people out here with brand new cars, it was 44 nice places to live, and wonder what did they do differently? What did they do right that I did wrong somewhere? But come to find out, a lot of their "well being" was either based off of connections and generational wealth, or people who were living above their means and barely surviving to which one slight extra expense could cause them to lose it all. Ironically, even though I slept in my car, I was actually more financially stable than a lot of the people around me who went home to places to live. Even now as I am staying with a relative, we have barely been able to make ends meet, all while working full-time, and them even going to school in addition to working. It just seems like the system has been rigged for only those at the top to prosper, usually at the expense of those who have been disadvantaged, no matter how hard they have worked to not be disadvantaged. With rental prices in Canada skyrocketing due to the lack of affordable housing being built, I am thinking of eventually buying a camper van (equip with solar panels) to live out of while I too work a full-time job at Amazon. Will be 60 years old, so planning on semi-retirement and working until I am 70 years old at Amazon when I can no longer pay into Canada Pension Plan but will be receiving my full pension amount from the Plan, along with Old Age Security (at 65 years of age).

After I moved to U.S. I had to get familiar with how the private medicare worked. I couldn't just go to any doctor or facility and get the care I would need without understanding your own level of coverage. It was stressful to have to check for coverage and then to analyze all the bills I would get and to call around and chase people for any discrepancies. Where I came from I never had to worry about such thing as the doctor's office would bill the government and I would never see a single bill from them.

I can understand how having to manage your own affairs as an adult can be challenging if it's always been done for you before.... There is no free ride. People who have ",free" medical care are paying for it with huge taxes. The young healthy person who takes care of themselves and rarely goes to the doctor is now subsidizing the fat schlub who smokes and drinks excessively and has all types of medical issues. You also inevitably must ration health care, because there is no such thing as unlimited medical resources. People in Canada must wait months if not years to get procedures done. The US definitely needs a better health care system, but single payor is not the way to go.

Most healthcare insurances are useless anyway. I have to pay up front $1500 deductible before any benefit kick in, and plus the $35 copay every physician visit. That's not it, coverage benefits do not cover 100% of a full cost of hospital or physician charges, and I have to pay the rest didn't cover. I have both wrist injury in an unbearable pains for 1-1/2 months and i couldnt afford for the orthopedic appointment. I took ibuprofen 4 pills total 800mg every 7 hrs for 1-1/2 months. It is killing me!

There isn't one reason why this is happening. The United States peaked out economically in 1972. That was the last time you could skip college, get a job, be able to afford a stand alone home with a 1 or 2 car garage, have a decent quality of life, not have your spouse work and not put in overtime, second jobs, etc. Those days are long gone. Since then, technology, globalization, improved logistics and business practices make offshoring not only practical, but necessary. I still cannot figure out why someone would pay an American college graduate UD$20,000/month for knowing coding? You can pay a Chinese or Vietnamese programmer a fifth of that amount and get similar results. Why would you pay an American factory worker US$20/hr. when you can pay someone in Vietnam less than $500/month? I am not saying that is right, I am just saying that this option did not exist in America during the 1940s, 50s, 60s and 70s. It exists now, so of course you have to take it as a businessman, or else you will go out of business. I don't know the answer to this problem, but I do know that wishing for the old times isn't it.

In Canada is a similar situation when it comes to business. Canada has a lot of free trade agreements, not sure if more than USA but less than Mexico. Canada leans more into service sector than manufacturing but it is not inexistent. Canada is trying to be less reliant on USA for trade for growth. We have oil in Alberta and potash in Saskatchewan. Fashion in Quebec. Film industry mainly in British Columbia. We have poverty but due to alcoholism, drugs, or lazy to work or put the effort.

I think a lot of the problem is the decline in manufacturing work. Manufacturing jobs used to provide work in the $20 - $40/HR range plus health care. NYC until the 80's had a lot of manufacturing and textile work. The evisceration of manufacturing has eliminated a giant chunk of the work that families decades ago used to rely on to stabilize their economic situation. A health society really needs lots of jobs in that middle step of the income ladder .

We can't end poverty because we think we can't end poverty. Politicians debate budgets while they eat steak for lunch. So, no one in the government attempts to do anything. Everything looks good from their office. So, what's the problem right? It's so easy to not care. And no one privately does anything. No charity showed up. And the cavalry was not coming to rescue anyone. I remember being outside one day and looking around and thought. The calvary is not coming. My fantasy at that time was that the state would remove me from my home and take me somewhere else. I grew up in extreme poverty. Moving in with relatives who only took us in because there was nowhere else for us to go. I knew deep inside that I was not welcome anywhere. Hey kids are expensive right? I was very aware of my burdensome presence. Especially when it came to family and friends. I didn't have dental care for six years. And ended up with permanent damage to my teeth. I was also injured in an accident but I was not taken to the hospital. I healed up but with permanent damage. I had surgery maybe 34 or so years later because I simply had to. One of my friends Dad was still complaining about my eating at their house as a teenager. This was 25 years after the fact. I had no response as he spoke. Because he was right. I did eat there often. At age 14 , I was sent 750 miles away with zero notice. It was literally "take your bicycle to the trash, pack one small suitcase and get in the car". I kept failing in public school. And ended up with an 8th grade education and a GED. But once I left home I was free. We couldn't even stay together as a family. At one point I didn't even see my mom for a whole year. I think I was 14 to 15 years old. When it happened. I owned a few mismatched clothing items and one jacket. I did not own one presentable outfit. No one asked me anything about how it affected me or if I was okay. I actually didn't get out of poverty until I left home at age 17. My Dad had asked me to leave home at that time because I was too expensive. He seemed so mad as he spoke. My parting gift was a very old car that he had paid $135. for. He handed me the keys and within ten minutes asked me when I was leaving. It was my 17th birthday present. My reply was quick. I told him I was leaving soon. It took me two months to finally get out. . I worked wherever I could, earning little money. I was afraid a lot. I hadn't even cried about it. Imagine that. I taught myself engineering by purchasing used hardcover books. I read voraciously. And developed a career. At age 29 I shared a cubicle with two degreed engineers. Who didn't understand how I had learned my trade. My entire career, I was asked similar questions. I never told them that I only graduated from 8th grade and had a GED I would attend engineering and management meetings and look around the conference room table. And think, oh yeah Masters from an Ivy league school. Oh that's an MBA guy there. And so on. At age 50, after all of my kids had a chance to go to college. It became my turn. I had been waiting for decades for that opportunity. I worked full time and commuted to a job 62 miles from home as I went to evening school and Saturday classes. I ended up with a business degree in 2013. At age 64 I earned my MBA. I'll never forget the past though, I tried to. But poverty gets inside and just tears you up. Especially as an adolescent and then a teenager. At that age you just don't have the tools to handle it. I will always carry those emotional wounds. It happens every time someone asks me "where are you from, which high school did you graduate from"? That's when the shame component rears its head. I'll always remember those times. And how much it hurt. Hey I had it good. I wasn't outside standing in the rain or hustling for a few dollars. I wasn't sleeping in a freaking tent on a sidewalk during winter. I could obtain a driver's license and other IDs. I know I went on a bit here. But I had something to say damnit.

There are two additional critical points that were not mentioned, 1) Actual quality job opportunities, and 2) education outside of higher education like Collage and University. The lack of broad manufacturing in the US as was pre 80's and the lack of quality and broad trade schools and apprenticeships to support that has caused a huge void in the labor market. One point they didn't spend enough time on is the lack of mental health facilities and help for people. Traveling to the US from Europe I am constantly struck by how many mentally ill people are living on the streets. You NEVER saw this in the 70's. Not at this level...

That's not how things work from a historical perspective. Wages have remained fairly stagnant until recent years where wages have not kept up with inflation, where even things like minimum wage, which hasn't changed in nearly two decades, and were common practices in entry-level professions. "Wage inflation" is more theoretical in terms of its importance, and it has not been given that credence is not an issue without supporting evidence of why we should care about paying people more being an apparent bad thing?

I travel the country for a living and there are so many empty houses and commercial buildings. It's insane that we have so much overpriced empty housing options in this country. There's no housing shortage. Just a narrative telling you there is one. These companies can afford to pay more, they just refuse to. Our current government needs to be dismantled and replaced.

I am grateful that the lady talked about loosing benefits if you suddenly make over the limits which are set low. The disabled and not always able to work full time and can only work part time in some situations hoping to improve their lives. The income limits are so low that the disabled are not able to live on the social programs or on their income alone. Even combined the income is not enough in many cases. This needs to be approached differently than the people who are able to work full time. The safety nets for everyone need to stay in place until they are able to be stable enough to stand on their own. So many people are concerned about fraud in this area, but the hoops to go through to get help are difficult limiting the amount of fraud.
