The English Channel is the busiest shipping lane in the world but is also one of the most dangerous migrant routes. In the past decade the UK has seen an influx of small boat arrivals on its shores and the British Government is now spending millions of pounds on inhumane policies to try and stop people from applying for asylum. But it won’t work and we’re going to tell you why.

Could somebody create a channel that explores how the geography has affected societies, cultures, and politics of different regions? Its not that such a channel couldn't have an occasional look at other social dynamics like migration problems, but if you want to focus on migration change the channel's description.

It's legitimate to criticise the UK's priorities and budget here. But the European migration situation is unsustainable. Europe is surrounded by failed states and shouldn't become the "dumping ground". And honestly, the refugee situation is a very one-sided story. As a European you can't just migrate to Saudi-Arabia either if shit hits the fan here. Also, most "refugees" are de facto economic migrants. If you're fleeing for your life, you don't travel thousands of kilometers. As a German who accomodated 2 Million refugees in 2022 I can tell you one thing: The more you accomodate refugees, the more come.
@SonsofThunder1234

My thoughts exactly. I wonder if the British needed to flee their country, who would have us? We have too much of a bad reputation around the world. I don't think there is anywhere we could go. We'd probably just stay put. I'm not just concerned for UK but other European countries aswell. It is unsustainable to keep taking so many from Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

I am not British but American and am not too familiar with UK immigration laws. But I imagine just like here in US, government doesn’t want to solve immigration issues because of the politics surrounding it. Think about it, every election cycle candidates run on the issue of immigration and false promises of fixing it. If immigration were to be solved, they would have nothing to run on and therefore won’t be re-elected into power.

what a dumb comment. If you fly to Australia and have a layover in Singapore, would you describe yourself has having come from Singapore or the UK? at most you'd say via Singapore. People may have family members or other reasons why they're trying to get to the UK which is absolutely fine - UK is still obliged to process their asylum claim. Always find it funny that anti immigration arguments frequently contain 2 points - that England shouldn't be responsible for taking all the world's refugees, and that migrants shouldn't travel through multiple countries. Seems very much to imply that other countries should take the whole world's refugees, so why do they think the UK is a special case? Truth is the UK actually takes on far less than other countries.

@@splaffyduck5787 In 2023 more than 40% of illegal boat crossings are from Albanians. A perfectly safe but poor country like 100s around the world. Can you see how they're not refugees and simply economic migrants which means the UK should also class people from Morocco and South Africa as "refugees". Also very few of these illegal immigrants have "family in the UK" as, guess what, they'd have simply made an application for asylum legally if as you say they have links to the UK and not these conduit countries.

France have clamped down on migrants working illegally in the black economy. They also do not house migrants in luxury hotels. The UK is one of the most densely populated countries in Europe. Immigration has seen the UK population rise by over 10 million in the last few years. The majority of boat crossers destroy their documents. Not the actions of genuine asylum seekers. Parts of Europe have seeing their populations decrease. Portugal for example. Why would you bypass that country to cross the sea in a boat to the UK. Huge asylum approvals creates greater demand on housing. Houses solely for asylum immigrants are now being built by local authorities across the UK. Please think again!

Little Tarquin presenting this is very tricky: at 12.40 he quotes a study from 2021 (which means that it probably used data from 2018/19, when the numbers weren't quite so bad) which said that "91% of small boat arrivals come from just 10 strife-torn countries (including, inexplicably, Vietnam). He knows full well that if he used 2022 figures, he would be forced to admit that 40% come from just one country - Albania - and there ain't no war there. Yes, it's poor, but it's the job of the ALBANIAN state to help lift them out of poverty, not the British state.

As someone who has lived in both countries, life as a minority is easier in the UK. Segregation, racism and lack of opportunities for minorities is a big problem in France. The banlieues have systemic issues that we don’t face. We have systemic poverty and disadvantage but the colour of your skin is less likely to affect that. Look at the North East for example. They also happen to speak English and often have family here already. We also have low unemployment with very little need for official ID. @@mopes2713 well as the imam describe it, between arrival and refugee status they get residency status, thus opening up australia job maket. The dude works hard and saves up for all that and once he gets refugee status that includes a passport he does have the funds, and thus he goes back home to get a financey. Even a lower wage in a number of countries means wealth in others. For example, sudan had a small problem of single mothers: it came from imigrants of europe who had their paper in order and went vacay in sudan, than stayed long enough to marry a local and, than once was time to leave they would just divorce the teen, living her most times pregnant and destitute, they went back to their wives in europe. There are more cases of this kind of stuff: 1 law were refugee status meant not living the host country for 20 years and a lot of fake refugees might not apply. There is a refugee problem, there is a fake paper work problem, and there is a fake refugee problem, on top of that there is an unskilled economic migrant problem. Not accepting these by going pro-migrant vs against migrant in political discussion is what's making these not adressed, and thus producing more harm.

The law that every country must take in people claiming asylum even if they entered the country illegally, or the law that states people should claim for asylum in the first EU country of arrival (which in the far majority of the people in France that want to get to the UK will be either Greece, Italy, or Spain). If it's the former, the latter law is even more useless than it already is.

Those laws are not at odds at all. The EU is considered one entity for this purpose so when entered for the purpose of requesting asylum this should be claimed at the first opportunity.

0:22 Most dangerous by what metric? The deaths of 31 people crossing the channel which you mentioned are incredibly tragic, but those are the only recorded deaths when 90,000 have crossed safely since 2018. You seem to be obscuring the truth that there are far more dangerous migrant crossing routes, such as the Mediterranean which has seen tens of thousands of deaths.

Alot come to UK because they already speak English but other than that do not attempt to intergrate well with the British people. They huddle in places already inhabited by their own and seek to practice the culture familiar to their own countries. They need to accept and adopt British culture if they want to live here so much. Brazen people really. They even start ripping British culture apart, finding fault with it once they get their feet under the table. You'd think a traumatized person from a war torn country would be so grateful to be safe at last that they'd start embracing the culture of the country who has given them refuge.

I’m not convinced and I know I’m not alone in this, that a large proportion of those entering on boats (who pays for those btw as they grow larger and more sophisticated) are absolutely not fleeing dangerous, war torn countries. The international laws for fleeing an unsafe country are that you head for the first safe country to claim asylum. As the vast majority of boat people are males between the age of seventeen and forty two we have to ask where are your family ? How could you leave them in the horrific circumstances you’ve described? Remember, mass migration has been a tool used throughout history (ancient and modern) to destabilise countries and this is clearly what is happening here and throughout Europe. Amongst other things, the sheer cost to the host countries becomes unsustainable and the collapse inevitable.
@godehardbrysch7905
@godehardbrysch7905 Жыл бұрын
No, according to the UN Human Rights Charter they can choose where they want to claim for asylum. This was also shown in the video. The Dublin agreement of the so called first safe country did not really work. The UK has left the EU thus the Dublin Agreement is not valid any more for the UK, at least the argument is nonsensical. "Brexit means Brexit". The opinions of the young men between the age of 17 and 40 are different. It is crucial to take wives and children with them, and children have died when crossing the Channel. So it's hard to decide, some are hoping the rest of the family can come later. Historically Europeans migrated as well: America and Australia (from a prison camp to a welfare state). Australia and New New Zealand officially asked the native populatior for forgiveness, this has honoured them.

The Refugee conventions were also meant to act as an alert system to problems in neighboring territories ; a problem with that aspect are refugees fleeing either domestic power grab that does not care about the victims, or fleeing a nuclear power sponsored power grab. In the first case no amount of talk will sway the tyrant to let people live their own lives, and in the second no nation is willing to talk honestly with tyrant with a pack of nuclear missiles at hand. As an example of the first, see Sudan; for an example of the later look at Putin causing millions to flee Syria and middle east towards Europe (of course Russia does not permit entry and few want to go there) which destabilises everyone excepting Russia which Putin sees as an advantage for himself.

How can they be considered an asylum seeker when they're coming from France? Are they in imminent danger in France? If they're fleeing a country as a refugee of war, etc, shouldn't they stay in whatever safe country they can first get to? At that point they'd no longer be in the danger that caused them to flee. Then they can apply to immigrate to wherever they want to live like everyone else. Why should they get to choose which country they want to move to when non-refugees don't have that option?
@onehumanrace6155

@@onehumanrace6155 good point. I think some form of rule like that is needed so refugees don't get denied/deported/etc to another country. It's just not as reasonable when they've already found safe haven but just want to "upgrade" to another country.
@I.____.....__...__
@I.____.....__...__ Жыл бұрын
It doesn't work like that, there are number of reasons, you can't just stay in whatever country you got to first while fleeing for your life. When you escape the country you're fleeing, you get to a refugee center, where you're processed and found a destination country that will accept you, then you're sent there. The problem is that that process isn't happening correctly anymore; they're not being processed by a refugee center in France and sent somewhere, so they're left on their own to go somewhere. The whole system is broken now.
