The US Women’s national soccer team is ranked No. 1 in the world, and there are several reasons for that. One is Title IX, which legislators passed in 1972. In response, high school and college programs across the country started women's soccer programs. And a rise in the number of players translated to a rise in talent.
But it’s hard to consider America’s success without acknowledging the suppression of women’s soccer abroad. Several countries banned the sport in the past, which has lead to a lower level of competition today.

Title IX is the reason for the explosion in the popularity of the sport for women and Title IX was the driving force behind the sport now being common at the college level. When UNC was winning all those NCAA championships very few colleges offered scholarships for women's soccer.

The competition US women have to face in football (soccer) isn't as tough as what the men have to face because women's football is only now starting to be taken more seriously by other countries. Men's football, on the other end, is the most competitive sport worldwide because it is the most popular. That means that millions of boys around the world are competing against each other to make it to a professional level, and like the video says, "If you have more young players to compete against, it'll weed out the best ones." That's what happens with men's football. You have to compete against the best players all around the world. That's why winning a World Cup is such a massive feat that very few countries have accomplished. I for one am glad female football is growing. It's a beautiful game that is meant for everyone. @@ademosthenes4911 Girls have been playing in Europe for years. I went to Scandanavia with a club team back in the 80s and felt bad when I saw 10 year old girls who could juggle better or as well. I know they had teams to play for back then. Right now college works for the women. It does not for the men as the Euro and South American pros go to a much higher level than US college. We will see if that becomes a problem for the women also. But only if league games with women fill stadiums and not just international games.

Spot on. The US treats soccer as a girls sport and everywhere else it is a mens sport. And the money part too. Schools there have far more cash to spend on sport than where I am (I lived in the US for 14 years). The facilities that I saw out there for the young ladies are at a higher level than any amatuer mens team, never mind the school teams. The pitches are kept in great condition. I would add that having access to training in all conditions, at altitude, in heat are all very good for athletes. I also feel that the US are able to perform at Summer tournaments as they play football in the Summer. The sport is on a break at that time in Europe. The summer heat will sap you if you are not acclimatised to it.

People really have to stop comparing men/women football. The diffrence between the USWNT and the next best team is far greater than the distance that separates the earth from the sun. That's no excuse for the bad performance of the us male team. Also it is very unlikely to see a 13-0 in a men's world cup because the diffrence between a top national team say France or Germany vs Panama or Russia isn't that big to allow a one sides goal fest although it happens on occasions. Ex Brazil 0-7 Germany in 2014 but that's a rarity.

Using 13-0 suorline as an example of "how good" a soccer team is just goes to show how little these people know about soccer (football). In soccer these scorelines often happen in lower division games and pick up games between amateurs, it actually reflects a tactical indiscipline and in this case proves how poor their competition was. Some would argue that the US team was just that much better but when you look at their other results and performances it just goes to show how little skill is involved in the women's game.

Honestly, i've been enjoying womens football (soccer) a lot recently, it's aggressive and fun to watch.. The USWNT is genuinely a good team with great strategy. Likely due to their Coaches, but their players play at a very high caliber as well. I watched a couple of their games and I'll admit they are very dominant and strong compared to other women's teams. I'm happy that women's football is improving and I hope that continues. Just my thoughts, I feel like it's because when we're growing up, the athletic girls that want to play a rough team sport, pick either soccer or basketball, but mostly soccer. While the most athletic guys in the school, choose other more physical sports , like football and wrestling. I feel like if there was a girls football team at every school, the really athletic girls that wanna play physically, might wanna do that instead too but idk. I read that every time, so determined are some men to prove their whine about women's football. I'd like to know what kind of teams they were, I have never see any statistics on the capabilities or otherwise of these teams. It may have been a women's pub team against a professional academy team.

@@dinerouk Maybe Austria did it as well but I've heard it was the Australian team and they play male U15 teams because they lack other teams to practice against on their level. Playing better teams is the best way to get better and women certainly have an advantage there, they can walk up to any football team and play their U15/U17 depending on the team.

So the only reason the USA Women's team was at the top was because there was little skilled opposition and SectionIX gave the USA women the opportunity to participate. Not much of a claim. As your "index" shows, this is likely to change. IF and when they can consistantly beat an improved World opposition, that will be something to boast about. (This is one reason why I believe the "World Series" should be renamed - it doesn't include a world opposition).

Never seen this point mentioned in any sort of discourse surrounding the team but a big reason they are successful is because they were operated like a club team for the most part. The contracted players first priority is the NT rather than their clubs so many of the more famous players post-college have more NT games than they do club games which is an absurd advantage. Yes, most of those extra games came against crap teams but that's still an advantage nonetheless (plus all the other advantages present at the time). Them suing the Fed despite the way the Fed organized the team being the main reason for their success leaves a poor taste not that I like the Fed too much either. The expansion of the NWSL and distribution of lucrative club contracts will shake things up a bit I'm sure. The new generation of players will also likely end their careers with more club appearances than national team games like most of their counterparts in other countries. How serious the other federations will be in the next 10 years will be a big determiner and I (sadly) do suspect the other federations may not be that serious. Last point, but I feel like it's worth mentioning that them having such an advantage and still playing such an unaesthetic brand of football is sort of disgraceful if you ask me. They were only able to play anything half decent in chaos (settled game state be damned) despite the media telling us that they had both the first and second best teams in the world lol.
