Let's face it! The world hates fire ants. It is not hard to understand why seeing as they are a major domestic pest in many countries, as well as a very dangerous agricultural pest, like in the Unites States where they pose serious problems and affect human way of life. They even float on water forming huge rafts during floods like some aquatic, indestructible beast.
In this video, we take a closer look at my pet fire ant colony named "The Fire Nation" in their AC Hybrid Nest ant farm setup, learn where fire ants came from, find out why they are such a powerful and impacting force in any ecosystem, but more importantly why they are magnificent evolutionary survival machines, and why I personally love them. We delve into the miracle of ant life, and why I feel ants in general make interesting and amazing pets in the home. Hope you enjoy this week's ant video!

Storytime! The reason i hate (or used to hate) fire ants is cuz one time when I was swimming at summer camp, I put my shirt on a chair while I was in the pool. It fell down onto the ground, and I didn't know there were fire ants on the ground. I put on the shirt after swimming and a few minutes later my back was itching and burning like nobody's business. Turns out a few fire ants had gotton inside my shirt and bit me in defense since I picked up and put on the shirt. Yeah. It sucked. Really, really bad. (As well as the time when my little brother fell onto a fire ant hill at school and they bit his arm all over. Poor kid.) But now, heck, I find them really cool! I just wouldn't keep any as pets. I'm looking at Carpenter ants for my first colony. 2 years later edit: My carpenter colony is on the rise, with 5 workers and a bunch of brood on the way! ^^ I don't know why I shared that back then but it's got likes so guess it stays lmao

Ursa Was Zuko's mother even thou she was technically never quean i think her sorry is compelling. scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/46890/what-happened-to-zukos-mother Zuko's mother used to live in a simple village along with her boyfriend. Then the Fire Lord Azulon, upon finding the location, decided to marry her to his son, prince Ozai. This is because he found out that she was avatar Roku's daughter, and wanted to strengthen the royal bloodline. It seemed like Roku tried to hide her for that very reason. She couldn't refuse. Fast forward several years, she kept sending secret letters to her boyfriend in the village. She suspected that the letters were being intercepted, so she wrote a lie in one of these letters implying that Zuko is actually the son of her and the boyfriend, rather than Ozai's. As suspected, Ozai was indeed intercepting the letters; he was furious with that lie (he knew that it was a lie because he had spied on her for several months before meeting her) and confronted her. He decided that as punishment, he would indeed treat Zuko as if he wasn't his own son. Years later, when Azulon commands Ozai to kill his firstborn to have a taste of Iroh's loss during the war, Ozai accepted immediately. Zuko's mother stopped him and offered him a deal: she would make a poison that Ozai could use to kill Azulon and take the throne, in exchange for sparing Zuko. When I lived in Alabama I was terrified and hated fire ants. Accidentally set my slip and slide up next to, what I thought was, a mole hill. I slid a little to far to the left and ended up covered in thousands of ants. Ran in the house and while trying to get in the tub and turn on the water I slipped and that's how I ended up with a chip in my tooth. Since moving to Washington and finding your channel i've grown to be alright with them, but I personally would never keep any variety of Fire ant. Just not that big of a fan. When I get my own place i'll likely start keeping ants. Hopefully false honey pot ants :3

Izices when I was five I was in my backyard.my mom talking to my friends dad .they I felt something crawling on me and before I knew it thousands of ants for crawling on me. Then my mom took me inside and got me in the bathtub. Crying in pain my mom got me some ointment. It lasted more than a month. So I've been splitting firewood these past few weeks to sell and holy cow, I must have split open at least 100 logs from different trees that black ants (C. pennsylvanicus from my noobish attempt at identifying) pour out of - workers, winged reproductive females, and queens were easily spotted by the throng of ants around them in the birthing chambers. It was all ash logs so because ash trees have been dead for several years here in Michigan due to the ash borer plague it splits super easy (it splits cleanly, doesn't splinter like oak) and it burns well so if anyone is looking to start a colony finding some ash logs with perforated holes is a great way to get started. Plus, if cash is short, it's the perfect time of year to sell the firewood to fund buying one of the AC Hybrid nest habitats and selling a full cord (three face cord, a face is 4' high by 8' stacked) should get you enough or close to enough for the complete kit.

That may be the reason some people hate them, but the reason I stated before is the reason I hate them. I've only ever came across little black ants and fire ants. And while I love watching the little black ones, especially when they're working together to drag huge bugs (compared to them) around. But I can't stand fire ants. I've never been attacked by the black ones, but I've been attacked quite a few times by fire ants. 😒 Let me tell you, its not fun when you have to quickly strip off your pants because you must have stepped on the spot they were trying to build their nest while mowing the lawn... 😳

+Zero Noctis I heard their needs are pretty much the same. S. invicta can take cooler temps tho. Cold kills S. geminata even air conditioning.

@Zero Noctis Hi I'm MadVampy from the AntsCanada Ants Forum. I keep Solenopsis Invicta and they are pretty easy to keep, they prefer temps 70*F and above and a good amount of moisture. As far as the temp the warmer it is (with in reason) the faster they will reproduce given a good source of food. One thing to remember is that this species reproduces very quickly and you'll find the colony will grow really quickly under good conditions as you have seen in Mikey's videos so be prepared to expand your nests and out worlds. Also beings this is a stinging species make sure you or anyone that will come in contact with them are not allergic to stings (bee, wasps, so forth) because keeping this species you are guaranteed to get stung! I love watching how fast they grow and how aggressive they are, the main reason I keep them, oh yea and where I live the queens are really easy to find on nuptial flights (one day I collected over a 100 queens and made a video about it). Here in Tennessee we just started getting these a few years ago. Although they are kinda cool to see occasionally, I hope they don't threaten our carpenter ants. Our carpenter ants get nearly 3/4 an inch long and just watching a single ant is enjoyable.

While I am able to watch your videos, I know I'll never be able to keep ants. I used to live in the southern US. I've been bitten many times by fire ants and even decades later shudder at the the thought of the intense pain. I've witnessed their destructive powers. And worst I've seen my brother pushed onto a large fire ant mound by other children. Now granted he mouthed off when he shouldn't have, but nobody deserves that kind of punishment. I can still hear his screams when I remember it. Even watching your videos, while fascinating, is not always easy. I just have too many bad memories of fire ants.

Silent Games Except Luna is a Roman goddess and Aphrodite a Greek goddess. Besides, the Percy Jackson stories aren't mythologically accurate and you shouldn't use that as your primary source of info. Hell, in Roman mythology, Luna was the goddess of the moon, not of fertility. And the Greek goddess of fertility was Demeter. So, before you correct someone on their mythology, don't confuse actual mythology with what you hear in movies or read in fantasy books.

Hi! I'm a big fan of the channel! I just have a few questions 🙂 So, in my condo unit in Manila, black crazy ants are running everywhere. Normally I don't mind, but it seems each week, their numbers keep increasing. Then, I spotted a cellar spider (or daddy longlegs spider - whatever you want to call them) in the corner of my room. So sometimes, I fling some of the workers into its web. It gets to eat, and there are fewer ants on the floor. Question 1: Am I a bad person for doing that? Question 2: I know you want to use mantids to curb the Golden Empire’s population because they kill their prey swiftly, but you said yourself that it will probably stop eating ants eventually, and you'll have to replace it. Why not add a cellar spider instead? They don't lose their appetite for ants as far as I can tell, so it would be less of a hassle to replace. It would also be able to eat more ants, too, and I'm sure a cellar spider would be able to defend itself just as easily as a mantis would. I know it's less humane, but in the end, it's nature. Like you said, no one is the bad guy when it comes to predator and prey. With all that said, again, I love your work! Ants are so fascinating! :D

I don't hate fire ants, but I'm from southern Alabama and they're such a problem there that one often can't go even five feet without running into another nest. Daring to sit or lie in the grass is just asking for a swarm of attack ants to find you. I remember I sat on the curb one day during a my walk back home from school when I was young. Accidentally put my hand into a fire ant nest. Didn't take me long to get home after that.
