That’s what I think every reboot/spin off should do have a NEW cast of characters set somewhere else in the same universe that way if it flops or it’s hated it won’t taint the IP as much. And if it somehow does well you can have main characters people like cameo or potentially crossover in future projects.

Blaming the fans for the failure of this lackluster mess explains a lot why Double Tap didn't live up to the original. Rhett Reese isn't a horrible writer but he clearly doesn't understand why the first movie worked so well.

I never heard of the show. If you have to resort to blaming fans for a failed show, it’s not worth watching. Some movies do the same thing too. Ghostbusters 2016 being an example. Their movie or show isn’t doing well, they go to blaming fans, insulting them, calling them ists and isms. Very childish behavior over something people don’t like all that much. It’s just another of those shows to keep a movie series alive, when it should’ve just ended as a movie series.

To be fair, LotR is a 90-year-old beloved franchise with a trilogy of famously popular movies. Even with a billion dollar investment they're more likely to make their money back than with a TV show based on one reasonably successful movie ($100 million box office). Not that the LotR TV show is good, but in terms of risk/reward (the only metric these studios look at) it makes sense.

I watched this episode back in 2013 and before watching it I thought it would be a series with different characters from the movie, and I was very disappointed when I realized that they just recast the actors as if nothing had happened. I like Eli Craig as a director (Tucker and Dale is awesome), but this pilot episode looks like it was made in a weekend with a budget of 5 Cokes. To be honest, I think a Zombieland series in 2025 would be a great idea, but for it to work it would have to take place in the first months/years of the apocalypse.

One correction, satellites in orbit typically do not need any maintenance for years. When components do eventually degrade or the fuel runs out they're typically decommissioned, so it's not that crazy to think that if the on star girl has access to the satellites she could continue to use them for quite awhile.

I remember finding the pilot and getting super excited, but then feeling a bit disappointed as well. It’s definitely a hard act to follow, especially since they decided to flat-out replace the actors and personalities while keeping enough similarities to be mildly recognizable. I understand it would have been difficult to bring the original actors back, especially for something with such a low budget, but at that point, they really should have created new characters. It would have been fun to explore the world with a different group of survivors-kind of like how Left 4 Dead 2 did it. The show had potential, but it fell flat because it tried too hard to capitalize on the original characters' concepts. If they had chosen to focus on a completely new group of people with distinct personalities, I think it could have been better received. Of course, some people would still be disappointed, but at least it would have stood on its own. Around 2019-2020, there seemed to be a big shift in how shows and series were viewed, with their popularity almost surpassing movies. I still remember being shocked to see big-name celebrities starring in TV shows instead of films. If they had decided to film a mini-series around the time Double Tap came out, it probably would have done better.
