The first gen Amarok isn't related to the Touareg, it's a full body on frame truck, but no low range transfer case (except in one Australia only model). The second gen however is platform shared with Ford and is a Ranger underneath, and available with the 2.3 Ecoboost, so presumably would be much easier to sell in the US.

As someone who has worked at dealers and independent shops as a Service Advisor here in Cali, I can speak on the Cat converter thing... You need to run either the OEM cats or a CARB approved cat in California. The Smog stations have the part numbers that match the vehicle, and they need to be printed on the cats. If you buy a non-CARB third party Cat, you basically wasted your money and will have to buy one of those other two options. The CARB cats sometimes need an exhaust shop to weld/install them since they are universal for multiple models sometimes. A WAY better example I've seen first hand than the Prius, is the 2004+2005 Legacy/Outback PZEV model, which is a Cali only car with special cats and fuel lines. The Cats when the pandemic started and prices of Palladium and such skyrocketed, went up to $9,000!!! Yes, that much for the OEM cats, and those cats fail prematurely. I explicitly tell people to AVOID those years of non-Turbo Legacy/Outbacks, unless you want to do a full WRX/STI swap which is probably cheaper LOL! Those cars themselves are worth $5,000 MAX in mint condition low miles. Right now, the MSRP for the two cat sections of that car are $3,188 + $3,694 according to Subarus parts software. Madness. The Non-PZEV OEM cats from a couple years early are just ~$1500 or so same as that Prius mentioned, which I would consider to be innexpensive for factory cats.

I think part of the headlight problem is headlights arent aimed properly from the factory. I've had a few family members come to me asking why they get flashed all the time in their new car. I live in the LA area and I have seen at least 5 Dodge Challenger RT 392s on Turo renting for about $60 a day if you rent it for the week and they are practically brand new. To find cars like these you have to use a computer, not your phone and make your search area cover Ventura to Riverside to San Diego basically give yourself a 200 mile radius and you will find lots of cool cars for a good price. Also you need to search 2 or 3 days in advance at the bare minimum with 7 being perfect. Try to start your rental on a Monday if possible because that's when there are more cars available. The closer you move to the weekend there seems to be fewer choices. And if you already have great car insurance, save yourself their rental insurance which I hear is a pain in the ass. Most people renting cars on Turo have lots of other cars because it's a business for them. Their cars are mostly brand new and very well priced. It's the people with one car only that try to charge you up the ass and have lots of stipulations about what you can do with their cars and they try to monitor you throughout your entire rental. These are the people I avoid just on principal no matter the price. There have been lots of complaints from renters claiming they were being charged for damages that were already there and should not be considered damage. Also, make sure you show up on time at pick up and drop off with a full tank of gas and clean to avoid any problems with them. I use Turo all the time and drive a different new car every week.

Underrated: the non-GTi-R, mildly hot N14 Pulsar/Sentra/Sunny models. GTI 3 doors with either SR18DE or SR20DE, SSS 5 door with SR20DE. Cheap, reliable, fun to chuck around, no worry about blowing up the gearbox like in a GTi-R. Honourable mention for the Sentra GT Cup cars from NZ - road legal spec race cars. 1600cc, cage, ready to race one make series. Sought after now as they mostly got raced to death.

But a very NZ viewpoint Nissan's were built in Wiri. It would be like me recommending a Clio 2.0 Cup to you in NZ. A basic bitch car in Europe, but if you own a Renault in NZ it's a niche thing and not something you find bits at pickapart. The US and North America they only got the NX1600 in the N14 platform. Here in Europe the JDM people are like the American car owners in NZ. Having the steering wheel on the wrong side is part of the appeal to people who want to show they are different.

At first i thought it was juat that i was coming down hill or something on other cars so i was seeing their light at a odd angle. CT charges property taxes on cars, and it was advantageous for my parents to change their residency to FL and spend 181 days out of CT which avoids CT income tax, and then all three of their cars are registered in FL which saves $$$ in property tax on the cars.
