Been to a few different countries in my life and nothing feels like the English countryside. You can feel the age of the areas and the history that is packed in those small villages. Plus nearly every small village has a pub that’s been there hundreds of hundred of years that is always a good spot to rest and get a pint, or two.

@@stevejohns8753Why? He obviously prefers England. Personally, I think all of the British countryside is beautiful, but I have my favourite places. Anyway, this video is specifically about England!

The sign which had, "Duck or Grouse" above the doorway, Neal - basically means "Mind Your Head" (low doorway) - So if you don't duck your head to go in - you'll grouse (complain) about hitting it !!! . . . By the way, are your cracking your fingers or knuckles as you are watching? As if you are, we can easily hear it . . . lol.

The name Royal Oak became popular after the Restoration of the Monarchy (yes, the UK was a republic for a short time after the beheading of Charles I). During the English Civil War, the Prince who would become Charles II was trying to escape England for his own safety and to preserve the possible future of the monarchy. One of the properties he hid in during his escape was called Boscobel House in the Shropshire countryside. When troops arrived searching for him or any other Royalists, he escaped out into the grounds and hid in an oak tree. That oak tree became known as The Royal Oak. Sadly in the subsequent years it was essentially picked apart by people seeking souvenirs but the owners planted an acorn from the Royal Oak, which was still standing (though damaged by lightning) when I visited Boscobel House around fifteen or so years ago and it was called The Son of Royal Oak. A 99 was called a 99 from long before they ever cost that, I’m pretty sure they were less than 50p when I was a kid.

A free house is a pub/bar that is not owned or run by a brewery.

Slight correction, a Free House is a pub that is not licensed/contracted to a single brewery for supply.

The blue plaque was funny bcos we have official ones, all numbered and catalogued, all around the UK, telling you which famous/notable person lived there and when. The one you saw wasn't real, but a really funny joke 😊

A free house pub just means they are not tied to any particular brewery and are “free” to sell ale from where ever they want.

To replace a Thatched roof like you see on these houses and cottage’s, it will cost between £4,700 to £8,800. Longstraw is used for Thatching.

I yoused to live in tiny wooden cottage right on Hambeldon cricket green, not the Hambeldon that started cricket. Sometimed you would hear a thud because a criccket ball hit the couttage. One night a air balloon crash landed on the green, everyone ranout there cottages. Grabbing roaps to stop my cottage getting coverd by the balloon, we did stop it, veryfunny crazy time.

Clovelly is beautiful and unique, but it's a real tourist-trap, and some would say, a rip-off. You have to pay to enter. Only tourists visit the place...real Devon people give it a wide berth! There are loads of beautiful villages in Devon which aren't so blatantly exploitative.
