Smaller court in FIBA makes it so the short guys are easier to hide on defense and are more useful on offense because of their shiftiness. Also the talent level in EL is obviously lower so guys who would be 3rd or 4th tier iso guys in the NBA are 1st tier over here.

yep. although Mike for example could easily play in the NBA with the insane level of talent, but the style of play I think pushed him out. and of course, his own desire to be the main guy instead of fringe bench-rotation player. these guys need the ball in their hands and in the NBA, that aint happening

Good point. Metric is created by scientists and everything goes logically in tens. 10 milimeters is 1 centimeter, 100 centimeters is 1 meter, 1000 meters is 1 kilometer. Everythings goes nicely. Imperial is made by XVIII century merchants? What is inches, foots, yards, miles wtf :(

I agree 100%, and can only add the hand checking rule and Zaza rule that creates so much spacing in defense, on man to man and iso plays, so taller guards, or players in general, become a necessity.

Their defensive flaws can be better hidden in Europe and they also can thrive on the offense as they face smaller and less athletic defenders compared to NBA. Unless we see another era of small ball in the NBA the small guards are not making significant comeback.

Great video. But you are evading one important point. These guards also suffer in the playoffs here in Europe. A Mike James style guard would never win a championship here. And he never did. Larkin was an exception but he had Micic and so many other ball handlers like Simone and Beaubois and great role players like Moerman and Singleton. And before him who won a Euroleague was Tyus Edney.

Why I watch Euroleague more. Still room for the little guy AND also the big guy. Someone like Purdue's Zach Edey might not fit in NBA anymore, but I think he would do well in the Euroleague.

Small guards are a dying breed, to be a guard in this NBA you gotta be at very least 6'3. Even then I believe in the future the bar will be raised to 6'5.

it‘s actually quite funny that in germany the opposite is happening. with the success of teams led by a small guard these last years (i.e. ulm with yago or bonn with shorts) getting a really good small guard to lead your team is becoming kind of popular there.

All of these reasons you guys said are factors too But ultimately i see this as LBJ effect Thats why not just short guys that disappear but also 7'1+ guys Now everyone is more or less closer to LBJ height Like 6'7 PG, 6'9 or 6'10 Center etc Its like there is an optimal height for NBA ( i dont think its 6'9 like LBJ tho, i feel like 6'8 or 6'7 is the most versatile height in NBA)

You can't teach height, that is the truth. But as the C position evolved to Embid, Jokic, Wembi , Sabonis so does the PG/SG short guys need to evolve and make impact, but coach is always going to prefer height over skills, you need to be 2-5x more skilled than the taller player you are competing with

I think guards are already the most talented guys out there of them all but since all the tall guys are improving as well, why would coaches prefer to shorter guys? Before taller guys were in behind with skill level and now we see Wemby doing everything on the court

It normal, because at the moment which little player is still dominant, what are they really doing apart from self-proclaimed super playmaker, that every little leader can do it. Where have the super athletic or super scoring leaders gone (the only ones to have really dominated in the NBA), their treatment is only deserved.

It all has to do with the coach and scouter mindset. They are prejudice against short players, they do not play them and then less and less of them play a significant role. It is not where basketball is going, it is where coaches make it go. Remember, for every tall athletic skilled player there is always a faster more skilled and athletic short player. And that goes for defense too. Defense is not only blocks and shot contest, it is pressure and lateral speed too. I bet if you take the best short players up to the small forward position and you give them a good power forward and center , they could challenge every tall line up

Short players in the NBA can't beat 6'3"-6'6" long athletic guards plus the 6'11" mobile shot blocker anywhere near enough unless they are elite vertical athletes, incredibly fast and strong, plus they have to have skills so good, they can score and create the buckets. A player like Mike James isn't athletic enough, nor strong, nor can he score or create effectively at the NBA level. There is only 1 old school point guard in the NBA, and that is TJ McConnell, who has incredible IQ and hustle, great passing, extremely fast feet and elite short midrange and avoiding the contest layups
