Why they say Japanese HATE Foreigners: How are we really treated in Japan?

Do Japanese people really hate foreigners? There are hundreds of videos on KZbin about the negatives of being a foreigner in Japan, but what's it really like? My American friend Richard and I traveled across Japan capturing street conversations with locals to give our insights after living in Japan for decades.

Senior citizen at 3:57. I wonder how much of this may be western younger people not able to make small talk with Japanese. If you practice with strangers you might be surprised. This older person probably is secretly lonely and would love to talk if given the chance. That may be one strategy, to approach seniors. They love to ask questions and will tell you a lot of information if given an opportunity. This is true in other countries. My mother was able to practice her Mandarin on older people. They also have an abundance of time to socialize. It was common to to sit in a Chinese home and talk for three hours over tea and snacks.

You can tell that obaasan wanted to talk to you - she seemed so happy to share information with you. Something I loved in Japan was when people wanted to teach me something, like about a place, or an event, or food or whatever I was unfamiliar with or unaware of! I will say the vast majority of my experiences and interactions in Japan were positive. I think youtubers who share about negative interactions do so because maybe those experience stood out really strongly to them because it might’ve caught them off guard/become an unsettling memory BUT it is sad that we sometimes let a couple negative experiences overshadow the vast majority of really wonderful, positive experiences or interactions we have had, or we allow it to take up any space in our head at all. Anyway, I always admire how bold, open, and friendly you are! I’m shy, even at 35 😅😅😅 I live in the US now where most people speak English and I STILL have trouble just going up to people and talking to them! I have no excuse…

My sister has been in Japan on several occations and she loves this country more than any other. She says that EVERYBODY is so nice and kind and always want to help or do some good. Once she asked for directions and the lady (working in a store) just locked the store and walked around 3 miles to show her where to go and did not want money or anything in return... that is stunning.

I SO much want to go to Japan someday and just have those little conversations and hear people's stories. I just feel like I won't know enough vocab to really understand the full gist of what they'd say. One of my favorite things in English is to hear people's stories and learn little things. I remember going on trips just around the states or in different cities and my mom would ask what I did and I'd share the 8000 stories I learned from people while in those states and cities.

Richard's perspective of how to observe people to gain a sense of if/how to approach people is really insightful! I agree, people conflate making friends or new acquaintances much harder than it actually is. Not everyone needs to end up being a friend but you can end up having lovely interactions and even potentially some lifelong friends. You never know if you don't try! Such a fun and interesting video. Thanks Anming!

The same applies usually to the countryside of many countries in the world, where international languages are not usually spoken. Many people are nervous to start a conversation in "fear" that you won't be abe to communicate. It always help if you're able to at least have a basic conversation, especially if you're able to speak a little of the local language. This is what I love to do (when possible) and learn more about the local culture.
@OrientalPearl

I thought it was cute that the old lady did not want you to leave. She was really enjoying your conversation and didn't seem to want it to end. I would think there's a certain segment of any country that dislikes foreigners. The real question is how many are in that segment. Maybe it depends on what area of the country you are visiting as well. I've heard over the years that young Japanese people are more likely to interact with foreigners and not older Japanese. I've only visited twice, but my experiences were exactly the opposite. The only people who initiated any interactions with me were older folks. I'm in my 50s so maybe that had something to do with it.

Thank you so much for these videos. I recently found your channel and love watching them. I'm learning Italian and have some ability on french and German. And while Chinese or Japanese are not the next language to work on, Arabic next, I find the topics you show to be very useful. KZbin haters, fake polyglots, language tips, cultural immersion tips, how to do small talk, getting past shyness and reticence are all great useful topics. Quick story for your amusement. Here in the US, in ethic restaurants like Italian, french, I try to introduce, even order in that language. So, my wife and I are in a Japanese steakhouse and speaking my little Japanese didn't work as the waiter's 2nd language was Spanish.

This was a great video! It was so sweet seeing the elderly woman speaking to you. Especially if an elder person living in the area she’s at, that was nice you got to interact with her, I know elderly people at least a good amount want to interact especially if they live alone or far from family. They really have a special place in my heart because my Grandma. Even though I haven’t had much commitment/time in my Japanese learning like back then, I’m trying to remember & test my memory when I see characters that I’m familiar with through a helpful app on Kanji. It’s a great review & tool to see where I am. (I can be better at timing my review time though). I can say though as I better my Spanish, speaking with the parents of some of my students, some parents of other teacher’s students at my job, & my parents more has definitely helped me & help break the ice with some people that have made contact with me. Spanish was my mother tongue though learning English in school really improved & was a priority at that time, I’m glad I didn’t give up to better at it last year. Also the guys asking you if you had a boyfriend from a hotel room (from what it looks like) haha their reaction was priceless haha 😂

I lived in Okinawa as an Airman in the USAF back in 2003. My experience was a little different, I think mainly because of all the American Military there. We had a decent amount of businesses that wouln't let American's in the door. As far as I know this was usually only nearish around the bases. American's have a pretty bad rap there, the only crime there was committed by Americans. The few times I went to mainland Japan, I don't recall seeing anything like that. Yet for the most part the Okinawans and mainland Japanese peoples were extremely friendly. I can't wait to go back someday.

Apparently the locals in the area can tell by appearance who is a tourist and who's military by that kind of stuff and military usually weren't welcome. Or at least a few years ago anyway.

Very cool video Anming-chan. I really like the colab videos you have with Richard. He has a great attitude on life and seems like a ton of fun to be around. Hoping its not off base, but I suppose you could have told the volunteer guide that Richard is your Brother from another Mother. That might confuse him a bit. Now back to my Japanese studies. @@adam.maqavoy yeah again a Japanese issue, I've heard their pay does suck but I never looked into that. I know the average for American comic artists is $56k and you can make a lot more depending on who you're working for and the popularity of the project. I believe Japanese artists work more on monthly salary, while Americans have contract deals.

The end reminded me of Sleeping Bear Dunes. Many people think going down is the hard part, being afraid of how steep and tall it seems. They are fools. Going back up is the hard part. 😅 The sand can be so hot and the water, such a relief, when you get down to the lake. When you are back at the top and worn out, despite feeling exhausted, there is something relaxing about the entire experience.

Went to Japan with my wife and kid, my kid had taken Japanese language classes for a few years and we had a great time, but I must say I think it might be harder without somebody who spoke the language. Even though some Japanese people appear to come off as formal most Japanese people are very friendly and really try with English especially compared to my ability to speak Japanese [nil]
