As an American who lived there 2 years. It’s so incredibly safe. I live in one of the safest places in the US now, Singapore is like nothing in Earth. You don’t know what national safety and a country keeping you safe, means and is till you’ve lived there. I loved it for the cultural experience: the food, religions, cultural cities and people. Really gives you a taste of planet earth in beautiful harmony. (I was a kid who was just growing there for a while)

Singapore is not safe. Lol. And I bet he reads social media and not local Chinese papers. The guy who chopped the girl into bits after raping her cos he couldn't reconciled done Christian values in his own mind and went psycho ? Yeh.... And SG is famous for loan sharks. Not getting back their debts... Or payments often sees the big bullies coming to physically assault you. There is a reason why the HBDs were created cos the government wanted things to be stopped. If SG terrified since then.. it's cos the money went round... And his comment about hard working people ? Why would those people who bullied others be hard working ? They made it cos they bullied. They're top dogs cos they weren't fair minded. People are "safe" or are they scared? ... People are keeping quiet because they don't want to ruffle their feathers. Most SG like in many Asian countries would just sit idly by and lie through their teeth. It's a small place.... His comparative example abs speech is exactly that style of communication...

Safety is always an issue in USA. Of course statistically it may not look bad - a few hundred or thousand deaths in a 300+ million population is nothing, but tell that to the Korean couple and toddler who died in the shooting with their 6 y.o. son surviving. They never thought they'd lose their lives either.

A few hundred or thousand? It's 48,830 people in 350 million. Or about 1 in 7000. And that's just the average, including rural towns and suburbs. in some cities it's like 100 in 100,000 meaning 1 in 1000. There are cities in war that have much better chances. And that's just homicide, which is the tip of the iceberg. Add violent assaults, stealing, burglaries, rapes, and other attacks...

Over half of America is at least 3rd generation immigrants (grandparents, parents or they were foreign born), and Asians are the fastest growing minority in America. Interview this group and you’ll find a wildly differing view of life in Asia vs the US. Saying this as a first generation American living in Singapore last 2 years, who’s lived half his life in the US and other half all over (Asia, Europe, Africa)

Turned the house into a rehabilitation house. So I kept it and it generates money. In Korea, bought small appartment 60k. Rent that out to companies who place workers yearly. Then married a viet, built a house off money generated off first two properties in nha trang, Vietnam.

Btw, I'm Asian American with connections in M'sia and S'pore. Singlish is also Malaysian English. Its a mixture of colonial English in British Malaya which included Singapore, Chinese, Malay and Tamil which are infused with colloquialisms and accents. It seems very artificial or pretentious to ignore this. I love the US, M'sia and S'pore and there are many like me . The media distorts the reality of people to people relations, and the quality of life. Asians do well in the United States according to Pew Research in terms of income, education, and quality of life. The most outstanding would be the ethnic Indians from India who are the richest and are the most educated at several standard deviations above other Asians according to Pew Research and official US Census Bureau data. They are also very strong in family values. As an example they control about 6 trillion US dollars of the US economy being around 1% of the US population and most of the US startups and also as CEOs; they're not just in the tech space. They are also very salient in the top US business school like Harvard, Wharton and so on. It's a wide and diverse world out there and we don't get stuck with very narrow viewpoints because people have vested interest with their clients or customers. Singapore may be challenged to maintain its asset pricing structure meaning cost of human capital and real estate. If we just open our eyes and see which neighborhood it's in and what and whom its surrounded by. Many countries in Asia can migrate to automated or AI driven routine processes both in the services industry and manufacturing. Higher value added in these is Singapore's traditional edge but by no means is it secured. High end design competencies in chips and tech entrepreneurship are lacking even in Singapore and that may be developed further in the United States which has also open migration paths for skilled professionals from around the world as well as is found in Australia. Indo Americans control USD 6 trillion in corporate America. Not bad for just 1.2% of the US population and being first generation Americans. Financial servIces USPs in Singapore can br challenged by the rise of other countries in the region with shifts in supply chains. The testimonies we're hearing are a linear extrapolation of the good run years from the 1970s in Singapore. The world is shifting and the rug is being pulled out from under our feet. fortune.com/2022/12/16/indians-taking-over-corporate-america-tech-layoffs-visas-ceos-companies-success-nitin-bajaj/

Exactly, no matter what he says, the US is still an extremely attractive place for Asians. Even this year, tens of thousands of Chinese risked their lives trying to cross the border illegal into the US. This guy is a rich white American so he's already at the top and he's choosing to live in a safest country. But for millions of Asians, the dream is to migrate to the US and climb the social ladder.

Singapore is a land with 0 natural resources, I remember hearing this as a child that our only resource is our people. Which is why LKY focused on education and leveraged our geographical advantage, transitioning us into a place for regional investment and safety was a key factor in giving businesses this confidence. As much as some western countries would call our laws "too strict" or their favourite buzzword "lack of human rights" their companies still invest here knowing that it's safer.

Perspective. We know it’s safe in Singapore…there are costs involved, freedom, cost of living, choices, lack of entertainment etc. It is the same in most countries - both good and bad and also different for everyone’s unique circumstances. This gentleman entered Singapore probably at society’s higher end, he has lived in the US for many years prior. Of course he appreciates what Singapore provides him that the US cannot and of course it’s a pleasure living here - he can afford it and his mind is tuned in to the differences. The average Singaporean, while appreciative, probably doesn’t feel it’s that rosy. And just like him, there are many like him, in the opposite direction, preferring the US’s space, freedoms, rights etc, and they would probably enjoy it there….with the focus on what Singapore doesn’t provide and because they can afford to get to the US.

Singapore is meant for the affluent people. It’s the most expensive place on earth and it’s just going to get more and more expensive as time goes by. Imagine paying $100,000 US dollars for a Toyota or Honda car and you can only own and drive it for 10 years. Nowhere in the world would you see many elderly folks in their 70s and 80s still having to clean toilets and clear tables just to scrap by. Despite being one of the richest countries in the world, there is no free healthcare, no unemployment insurance, no welfare and no free education. This is the reality of Singapore under the facade as one of the richest countries in the world. It’s a shame.

@yangtzeling7468 The number of cars can be limited to 1 or 2 per household. The exorbitant prices of vehicles set by the government are not so much as to prevent traffic congestion but to market cars as a luxury item and earn a huge amount of profit from it.

@@andreweng7151 The last time I checked, the government wasn't in the business of selling cars.
